Sean Dyche Burnley

#PLStories- Sean Dyche admits missed chances costed Burnley against Newcastle United #BURNLEYFC #NUFC

SEAN Dyche said Burnley's failure to take their chances proved costly as they lost 1-0 at fellow strugglers Newcastle United. Callum Wilson's strike condemned the Clarets to a first league defeat in six games and Newcastle sealed a first win of a season to boost their own survival hopes. Goal difference alone separates the bottom three sides with Burnley, Newcastle and bottom of the table Norwich City all locked on 10 points. Sean returned to East Lancashire bemoaning his side’s failure to make the most of an encouraging first-half performance and a late flurry. Asked to assess his side’s display, Dyche said: “First half, really good. We came here and we took the game on, which we wanted to do, opened them up on occasions. “We created good-quality moments and chances without taking them - which is obviously a question mark during the season - so some of the quality was really pleasing. “Goals change the feel of games, not just the scoreline, and it did for them. It gave them something to hang on to and it changed the feel in the stadium.” Former Clarets boss Eddie Howe saw his side outplayed and second best for long periods in front of a crowd of 51,948 at St James’ Park but made the most of a slice of good fortune when Wilson blasted home his sixth goal of the season after goalkeeper Nick Pope had dropped the ball at his feet. Burnley mustered the first attempt on goal when Maxwel Cornet ran on to Chris Wood’s sixth-minute knock-down but dragged his effort wide and Johann Gudmundsson rattled Martin Dubravka’s right post with a fierce shot seven minutes later with Jamal Lewis appealing in vain for a free-kick. The Magpies were not seeing enough of the ball to establish any momentum and what possession they did enjoy they wasted to allow Burnley to counter-attack, Cornet stretching Dubravka with a glancing 21st-minute header. Miguel Almiron blazed high and wide and Jonjo Shelvey’s touch let him down on the edge of the box as Newcastle grew increasingly frustrated, but it took a timely intervention by full-back Charlie Taylor to prevent Wilson from meeting Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross on the volley with 29 minutes gone. Cornet’s limping departure 14 minutes before the break provided an unexpected solution to one of the home side’s problems, but their inability to put together a cohesive attack simply served to hand the ball back to the opposition with monotonous regularity. However, they received the helping hand they needed five minutes before half-time when England international Pope spilled Joe Willock’s cross as he came through a crowd of players and Wilson shifted the ball before smashing it into the roof of the net, with the keeper’s appeals for a foul going unheeded. Cornet’s replacement Matej Vydra might have levelled in first-half stoppage time, but skied his attempt after slipping as he controlled Matthew Lowton’s cross. Jay Rodriguez thought he had levelled seven minutes from time, an offside flag and a concerted defensive effort ensured Newcastle’s day was not ruined.

#PLStories- Graham Potter gives update on Leandro Trossard after Saints injury #BHAFC

GRAHAM Potter has given an update on Leandro Trossard after suffering an injury during the Premier League fixture against Southampton. The forward who is celebrating his 27th birthday was stretched off against the Saints in the 85th minute after receiving treatment on the pitch. Trossard suffered an injury to his elbow, but according to manager Graham Potter, the injury was not a bad as first thought. Potter said: "It was an elbow, we don't think it was as bad as first thought. "But again we have not had a massive amount of information. "The early diagnosis is a bit more positive, we will have to see how it goes over the next day or so." The forward had to leave the pitch, leaving Albion with only ten men on the pitch. However, similar to Wednesday night it seemed to spur Albion on as they grabbed a 98th-minute equaliser through Neal Maupay.

#PLStories- Graham Potter full of praise for comeback spirit of players against Saints #BHAFC

GRAHAM Potter has praised the spirit of his players after they came from behind to earn a point against Southampton. Albion were not fully at the races as Southampton took the lead through Armando Broja in the first half. Despite the game looking like it was going to end in defeat, the ten men of Albion fought back and equalised in the 98th minute to grab a point from the game. Neal Maupay was the man again to be the hero after he intervened with Jakub Moder's volley, to score the goal himself. Albion were down to ten men after Leandro Trossard was forced off with an elbow injury. Brighton and Hove Albion players celebrate the late equaliser against Southampton Despite another game going by without a win, Potter was proud of the way his players pushed back in the game and gained another result. Potter said: "If it happens more than once, it can’t be luck. There’s a great spirit with the players. We weren’t at our best at all, it was a really scrappy game. "We pushed and pushed, and it was fantastic for Neal Maupay to get the goal. "Stuff has happened with injuries and the guys have had to adjust and reset. The character of the team is fantastic. "A win’s a win, still three points. Consistently, we're still in there and fighting for points. The league is so competitive, nobody gives you anything. As always, we can continue to improve and try to get points."

#PLStories- Brighton boss admits team were not at best during draw with Southampton #BHAFC

ALBION manager Graham Potter has admitted that his side were not at their best during the first half of the match against Southampton. The Seagulls fell behind during the first 45 minutes of the Premier League fixture against the Saints after Robert Sanchez was punished for a poor clearance by Armando Broja. There was a big improvement from the players during the second half and managed to scrap a draw after Neal Maupay's late equaliser. Potter was happy with the improvement that he saw from his players in the second period of the match. Brighton and Hove Albion players celebrate Neal Maupay's equaliser The manager told the press after the game: "I think we have to be honest, we were not at our best in the first half. "Southampton were a better version of themselves than we were, that is not a criticism of the players, these things happen and I take responsibility for that as well. "We adjusted things in the second half and I think we were a little bit better, the game was more even and we probably edged it. "The second half we went down to ten men and we just kept going and created some opportunities and created some pressure and created some danger and in the end it was great to score. "Great to get the point." The draw sees Albio collect one point from St Mary's and stay in ninth place in the Premier League table.
Alex McCarthy Southampton

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl slams goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after injury #SAINTSFC

ANGRY Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl did not hold back in his criticism of goalkeeper Alex McCarthy as Saints threw away two points against Brighton. Leading 1-0 heading into 10 minutes of stoppage time thanks to an Armando Broja strike, Saints squandered the win with Neal Maupay firing home after latching onto Jakub Moder's wayward strike. And, after the game, Hasenhuttl revealed a hamstring injury meant McCarthy was unable to attempt to save the late shot, adding how the 32-year-old did not inform him how bad the injury was. Saints only used two subs during the game, so could have introduced substitute Harry Lewis to replace McCarthy, with Fraser Forster already ruled out through injury. Lyanco took a late goal kick due to McCarthy's struggles, but Hasenhuttl says he was not aware of the full extent of the problem. He said: "Alex must be here definitely more professional and this is what I missed today in such a game. "Yes, it is hectic in the end and everything but this is reason why I sometimes change a little bit later, because especially in such a game, you have seen today when you change too early, suddenly one man down. "It was an intense game, it can always happen, something in the end. "Very often we were discussing that I change a little bit later, but today I had one change and we couldn’t take it because he didn’t say anything. "This is for me not acceptable. "This was the reason why we couldn’t play out anymore in the second half. But I didn’t know how tough it (the injury) is. "I thought he could only not play long balls so I kept him in goal. If I could do it again, I would change it, but I couldn’t because I didn’t have the message that it was not possible any more." Asked if he feels McCarthy should have informed him of the severity of the injury, Hasenhuttl added: "Yeah. That’s the reason why we have a substitute goalkeeper on the bench. "This is no problem. He made a big save before. This is where he kept us the three points at first but then when he thinks he cannot jump in the corner from a free-kick then I think it is tough."
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl reveals hard to digest draw against Brighton #SAINTSFC #BHAFC

SAINTS boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admits it is "hard to accept" his side did not come away with three points against Brighton & Hove Albion. Saints looked on course for their fourth Premier League win of the campaign, with the other three having all previously finished 1-0. But they saw their slender advantage scuppered deep into second-half stoppage time, Neal Maupay popping up to equalise and earn a 1-1 draw for the visitors. "It’s horrible, the feeling I think tomorrow morning will be even harder," Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo. "We are not the first team that has conceded a goal from them in the overtime, but we know that it was absolutely not necessary. "You cannot be happy about what you have done in the 95 minutes before when you concede such a goal. "When you are one up it is always a possibility to get the equaliser, as long as you don’t score the second goal then there is always a chance to come back and this is what happened today. "This is the reason why we are very, very disappointed today." He added: "This is absolutely a situation where we had a fantastic game played, maybe the first 35-40 minutes. "Dominated nearly the whole game. We lose (two points) at the end and we feel we are not the winner today. "This is awful. This is definitely hard to accept." Brighton played all 10 minutes of stoppage time with just 10 men due to an injury forcing off Leandro Trossard after the Seagulls had made all their substitutions. But they still battled back for a point. Asked how disappointed he was with the way his side approached the final 10 minutes, Hasenhuttl referenced an injury to goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, who played on despite a hamstring complaint. Hasenhuttl said: "This is the issue when you have no goalkeeper you can play the ball back to. "They give pressure, even with one man down. It is not so easy to play out then. "We had a few good moments where we were coming in the opposite half, but we have to keep the ball in there. "We had two big ball loses in the overtime. One from Moi (Elyounoussi) and one from Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse). "And then, like always, I think it is not the first time they turn a game around in overtime and they did it again. "We don’t want to discuss if we deserved to get the win today or not. We didn’t take it and this is hard for us to take." He added: "The performance was much better than, in the end, the result. But this is football. "Sometimes in the end it is not fair or when I say not fair, when you are so stupid in the end, then we don’t deserve the three points in the end. "But the performance, I cannot say that it wasn’t okay, it was absolutely okay. "We have to learn from such moments. We were discussing this also in the half-time that it is never over until the last whistle is blown, especially against Brighton because we know that they have this momentum in this season, all the time at the end. "This is the third time they have got an equaliser in the overtime. "As long as you are one up, the chances are always there and they believe in these chances. They did it. "We had a big chance to beat them for the first time here at home and we didn’t do it. This is hard to take."
Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- Graham Potter will continue to take his time with Tariq Lamptey #BHAFC

ALBION boss Graham Potter will continue to tread carefully with Tariq Lamptey despite the youngster’s dynamic performances in the last two matches. Full-back Lamptey is still building up his strength and fitness a year after suffering a serious hamstring injury that sidelined him for nine months. The 21-year-old gave Leeds a torrid 75 minutes before being withdrawn in the 0-0 draw at the Amex last weekend and then climbed off the bench to set up Neal Maupay’s late equaliser in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at West Ham. Albion fans are hoping for Lamptey to get more minutes on the pitch, but Potter says the hectic December schedule means he cannot risk the Chelsea youth product from the start in every match. “We’re going through a period where we’re going to play lots of games in a short space of time so that’s the only thing that’s going to stop the regularity of Tariq,” said Potter. “We all know his qualities and what he brings to the team. It’s just the close proximity of games will challenge him and us in terms of how much he plays and when he plays.” Lamptey is likely to return to the starting line-up when Albion travel along the south coast to face Southampton on Saturday.
Sean Dyche Burnley

#PLStories- Johann Berg Gudmundsson is hoping for a good run of results for Clarets #BURNLEYFC

Midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson believes Burnley face a run of fixtures which could prove pivotal in deciding their Premier League fate this season. Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Wolves means the Clarets are on a five-game unbeaten run in the league since they suffered a 2-0 defeat at champions Manchester City in mid-October. However, they still have just one win from 13 games and remain in the relegation zone, three points behind 17th-placed Watford and three above bottom side and tomorrow’s opponents Newcastle. Sean Dyche’s side will face Watford, Aston Villa, Everton and Leeds in their next six games and Gudmundsson is well aware of the need to take points from teams in the bottom half of the table. “It’s a massive period,” the Iceland international said. “The Christmas period is always massive and especially the games we have. “It’s teams that we think we can get points off and we’ll do our best to do so and hopefully by the new year we will be in a better position than we are now. “The mood is good. We think we are extremely close to picking up more points than we actually have been doing. It’s just about finding that fine balance of winning games, not to concede too many goals and scoring at the other end. “There have been a lot of games that we normally put to bed and we have not done that this season. We’re extremely close to that and I’m confident we will do. The staff around the players are confident as well. “There are a lot of games coming up, a lot of opportunities for us to put points on the board. We’ve been in this situation before where we’ve maybe not played to our standards but we’ve always got to that standard.” Newcastle are still seeking their first win of the season after drawing 1-1 with Norwich in midweek, although that could be seen as a good point after Ciaran Clark was sent off in the ninth minute. “The next game is a big one and a fun one,” Gudmundsson said. “Newcastle are still waiting for their first win so it’s going to be a lot of pressure on them. We’re going to go there and enjoy it and try to put on a good performance. “It’s a good stadium, the crowd is always lively there as well so we need to make sure we make the crowd go against Newcastle a bit with a good performance.”

#PLStories- Jack Stephens set to be on the bench against Brighton #SAINTSFC

JACK Stephens is set to be on the bench when Saints host Brighton tomorrow (3pm). The centre-back has been out of action since suffering a hamstring tendon injury during the 0-0 draw at Manchester City in September. But, having returned to training last week, Stephens is now ready to link up once again with the matchday squad. However, despite Jan Bednarek being set to miss the visit of the Seagulls due to a calf problem, Stephens is unlikely to come straight into the starting XI. Asked if Stephens was fit enough to feature from the off against Brighton, Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo: "It is good to have him back. "He hasn’t had so many sessions so far with the team, but this weekend he will be for the first time back on the bench and then hopefully it is the next step for him. "Then he is coming back to play for us." Stuart Armstrong and Fraser Forster are also set to be unavailable to face Brighton due to injury.
Nathan Redmond

#PLStories- Nathan Redmond beleives Christmas period will be crucial for Saints #SAINTSFC

LONG-SERVING winger Nathan Redmond believes Saints' "big squad" could play a key role ahead of a "crucial" Christmas period of fixtures for the club. Redmond is currently in his sixth season at the club, with his appearance against Leicester City on Wednesday evening his 210th for the Hampshire outfit. Following the departure of experienced trio Ryan Bertrand, Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard over the summer, Redmond was quickly elevated to the position of one of the most experienced members of the squad. INTERVIEW: Redmond on 'whirlwind' few weeks after contracting COVID and becoming a father Of the regular first-teamers at Saints, only Alex McCarthy, Stuart Armstrong, Theo Walcott, Jack Stephens and Oriol Romeu are older than Redmond. Comparing the young squad he is a part of this season to those of previous years, Redmond told the Daily Echo: "I’ve been the younger player in teams at this club and I’m slowly turning into one of the older players, one of the more senior ones. "But I think the squad in depth as a whole is more of a luxury for us this year. "I think we’ve gone into some seasons with a small squad and coming into Christmas schedules it’s not really been the greatest of times for us. "We’ve got a big squad this year which allows us to rotate and everybody understands their roles and responsibilities." Saints currently sit 15th in the Premier League table, following their 2-2 draw with the Foxes. While recent campaigns have seen Ralph Hasenhuttl's men struggle at times at home, their form at St Mary's this season has been good, losing just once – a 1-0 defeat to Wolves. Discussing the improved home form so far this campaign, Redmond said: "In recent years it seemed like we couldn’t buy a win at home! "But we’re doing very, very well at home. "We’re not going into games as naïve anymore and losing that impetus to really go and put that stamp or our authority on at home. "At the end of the day, our fans have missed a lot of high energy and attacking football. I think we’re working slowly on that to give them that every single week." Looking ahead to Saturday's home fixture with Brighton, who are winless in 10, Redmond added: "We’ve always been looking at the games we need to win that are around us. That’s in the forefront of our mind. "They’ve had good runs at the start of the season, but from what I’ve seen they’ve not necessarily had one of the best runs at the moment in recent weeks. "This sort of time in the season is very, very crucial. "I’ve been at this point in the season flying with Southampton and also doing not so well, so at the end of the day, this sort of period in time is crucial."
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl on reported takeover of Saints #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl admits he speaks "very often" with the Saints board about the possibility of a takeover at the club, but added: "As soon as there is any news, they will put it out." A report by The Athletic today claimed "there is a growing need" for majority shareholder and chairman Gao Jisheng "to offload his stake sooner rather than later" for "financial reasons". The report goes on to claim Saints could even be sold as early as this month. Asked if he has spoken to the board about a potential takeover at the football club, Hasenhuttl said: "Yes, I have. As you can imagine, nearly every day I get information from the board, from (CEO) Martin (Semmens). "We speak very often also about this topic and the only thing I can say is as soon as there is any news, they will put it out and everybody will know it then. "We know this is a situation we had for long in this club and there is nothing new coming to it. "So when there is a final decision taken about our future then it will be announced, not earlier."
Aaron Connolly Brighton

#PLStories- Brighton manager confirms that Aaron Connolly could make return to squad #BHAFC

ALBION manager Graham Potter has played down injury fears ahead of the weekend's match against Southampton. Three Albion players will miss the game after picking up injuries against West Ham last night. Adam Webster, Adam Lallana and Jeremy Sarmiento all picked up injuries and needed to be substituted in order to receive treatment. However, fans can rest easy as the boss has played down concerns that the squad would not be able to deal with the added strain, suggesting that he is prepared to call upon some of the younger players at the club. Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter Potter has hinted that Aaron Connolly could make his return to the matchday squad following the injury to Lallana. Potter said: "We were hoping to get some minutes into him with the under 23s, but it looks like he will be with the group come the weekend. "We are still in the process of checking on everyone and recovering. "We will make some decisions tomorrow - if we need some of the under-23s then, of course, we will use them. "but at the moment, it doesn't look like we will need to.”
