#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl believes Harry Lewis has ‘a lot of potential’ #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl believes Harry Lewis has "made some good progress" as his wait for a competitive game looks set to continue. The 23-year-old has not featured in a first team match since May 2018, during a loan spell at Dundee United. His last game for Saints came in a 5-0 FA Cup loss against Arsenal in January 2017. Following injuries to both Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy in the space of a few days last week, it seemed as though Lewis may get an opportunity to make his Premier League debut. However, Saints swiftly moved to snap up 40-year-old free agent Willy Caballero, who instead is expected to take the gloves when Hasenhuttl's men head to the Emirates to face Arsenal on Saturday (3pm). Asked to assess the progress of Lewis over the past three years, with the Shrewsbury-born stopper set to be on the bench against the Gunners, Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo: "He is a fantastic guy. He is working very hard with our goalkeeper team. "He is the guy who is our number three. It was a pity that we couldn’t give him more chances to play so far, but I think he made some good progress in his game. "With the ball, definitely. The exercises we do with him definitely helps also and, sure, with his shot-stopping in the box he is little bit behind the other two guys we have. "But it is still a lot of potential that he can bring to shine and therefore he has to work hard. "Maybe there is coming one time the chance. You see sometimes it goes very quick and then suddenly you have to play. I think he is ready for this." Quizzed on how he can keep a third choice goalkeeper such as Lewis motivated, knowing he is unlikely to feature, Hasenhuttl explained: "I think for them it is a very clear situation. "They know exactly what they have to expect from the season. "They know the role they have to play. They are a very important part of a team. "You need them every day, in every session they are working very often more than the number one goalkeeper. "Because he is every day with us. Also the session after the game. "It is a special role you have to play, but he does it in a fantastic way and this is why he’s with us."

#PLStories- Brighton issue statement after clash against Tottenham is postponed #BHAFC

ALBION’S home match against Tottenham Hotspur has been postponed due to a “significant number” of positive Covid-19 cases among Spurs’ players and staff. The match, which was due to be played this Sunday at 2pm, was requested to be called off by Tottenham and the Premier League Board has taken the decision following guidance from medical advisers, with the “health” of players and staff the priority. This comes after Spurs called off their Europa Conference League match against Rennes, due to be played tonight, because of the number of Covid-19 cases at the club. Eight first team players and five staff had tested positive for Covid-19 in the Spurs camp, according to Sky Sports. The fixture will be rearranged in due course. An Albion spokesman stated: “The postponed fixture will be rescheduled in due course and the Premier League wishes a quick recovery to those with COVID-19. “Any supporter who has purchased a ticket is advised that the ticket will be valid for the rescheduled match date. “This includes supporters who received a ticket through the season ticket sharing system or 1901 ticket transfer or purchased hospitality.  “Season-ticket holders and 1901 club members who have distributed or sold their seats through these systems are advised that their season tickets have been deactivated for this match and, if you wish to attend the rescheduled fixture, you will be able to purchase match tickets once the new fixture date is confirmed.   “Please note match ticket and hospitality refund requests will not be accepted until confirmation of the revised match date. #PLStories- Tottenham Hotspur issue apology to Brighton fans after clash is postponed #THFC #BHAFC

TOTTENHAM Hotspur have issued an apology to Albion fans after the match between the two teams was postponed. Spurs were forced to postpone their match against Stade Rennais last night in the Europa Conference League due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the club. Manager Antonio Conte confirmed that eight players and five staff members had contracted the virus in his press conference yesterday. The match against Albion was already in doubt but it has now been postponed. Spurs have issued an apology in their statement about the match postponement. A club spokesman said: "We should like to apologise to everyone at Stade Rennais and Brighton and Hove Albion and to both their supporters and ours for any inconvenience caused. "We should also like to thank both clubs for their understanding during these challenging times." Albion's next match in the Premier League will now be on Wednesday evening when they take on Wolves.
Nathan Tella

#PLStories- Nathan Tella gives insight to getting back from injury with right fitness #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella revealed an improved diet and keeping match sharp by playing for the B team were key to him battling his way back into Saints' starting line-up. The talented 22-year-old was one of Saints' shining lights during the closing weeks of the 2020-21 campaign, netting his first goal for the club in a Premier League victory over Fulham at St Mary's in May. However, despite looking lively during pre-season, including scoring in a win at Swansea, Tella's minutes at the start of this season were limited. He featured for just 10 minutes of the club's first six Premier League matches, although did get a chance and scored in the 8-0 Carabao Cup thumping of Newport County. After starting against Chelsea in the league, another spell out the side followed. But in the past three fixtures, Tella has been granted more opportunities in the side. The attacker came off the bench at half-time against Liverpool, before starting against Leicester City four days later. Tella then kept his spot for Saturday's draw against Brighton, meaning the Stevenage-born ace played more minutes across eight days than in the previous two months. "It’s nice," said Tella in an interview with the Daily Echo. "I was quite frustrated at myself that I hadn’t played as much football as I would’ve liked. The fact that now the manager has picked me to play the last two games and I’ve been involved from the start is something which I’m thankful to him for. "And I hope that there’s many more opportunities if I just continue to do the right thing." Asked how tough it was to stay patient having ended last season so strongly, Tella added: "That’s football. Football is not always just going to be plain sailing. "You’re going to have ups, you’re going to have downs. I have to be honest, this was a down for me. "But at the same time I used it as a learning point, to learn what I need to do to get back into the team, what I need to do to start or what I need to do to come on. "The team have helped me, the coaching staff have helped me, just kept being positive to me and helping me when I was struggling. "But I’m thankful and now I’m back in the team, I just want to hopefully stay there for as long as I possibly can." Discussing his relationship with boss Ralph Hasenhuttl during his spell out of the side, Tella said: "I felt like the main thing for me was I just wanted to play football. I felt like I just needed to be fit, because if I was to get the opportunity, I wanted to be able to play as long as I can and not feel like I’m tired and just focus on my football instead of my fitness. "But of course he’s helped me, told me what I needed to do to get back into the team. I was able to go and play with the B team to go and get minutes and get confidence and he came and watched and told me he was impressed with how I did. "Now I’ve played the last two games, so I feel like it’s worked." Hasenhuttl has previously praised Tella's attitude for asking to go and play for the B team. Despite having been named on the bench at Watford in the Premier League the day before, Tella played for Dave Horseman's side in a Premier League 2 clash against Aston Villa at Staplewood, scoring in the 4-0 victory. "It was just more for minutes to be honest," said Tella when asked why he wanted to play for the B team back in October. "I hadn’t played as much football as I perhaps would’ve liked to or perhaps would’ve hoped to by that point in the season. "Obviously the B team are still a very good team so it was quite challenging and a competitive game. "So the fact I was able to play in that game, I felt like I was able to do well. "It was obviously good for the B team to pick up points, but then also good for myself. So that when I’ve got the opportunity to play, I’ve been able to feel fitter than perhaps I would’ve been if I hadn’t played in those games." As referenced on a couple of occasions by Tella, working hard to keep himself fit has been a key factor in his return to the first team line-up. And he explained how activities away from the training ground have also played a role, notably his new hobby of cooking. Asked how he was getting on in the kitchen, Tella said: "It’s going all right! I can’t lie, I’ve experimented with a few dishes and they’ve gone better than I’ve expected. "But I’ve only had to throw out one meal I’ve made! "But no, it’s all been good and it’s helping me. I feel like my diet has improved as well, which is helping me. "I live by myself. I used to live with Dan N’Lundulu, but obviously now he’s gone on loan I’ve been here by myself for the season." But teammate N'Lundulu should not be expecting any of Tella's speciality dishes when he returns from his spell at Lincoln. Tella said: "No, I’ll be quite selfish with my meals to be honest! "I like my own cooking, I don’t know if he will. I’ll just keep it to myself."
Alex McCarthy Southampton

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl believes Criticism of Alex McCarthy was ‘not right’ #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl admitted his criticism of Alex McCarthy after last weekend's draw against Brighton "was not right", adding how if that situation occurred again "I would do it different". Hasenhuttl slammed his goalkeeper after Saints chucked away two points to draw with the Seagulls, who equalised in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time. The Saints boss explained how McCarthy was struggling with a hamstring injury, which has subsequently ruled him out of action for the next three to four weeks, which he felt prevented the goalkeeper from contributing as he would have liked in the closing stages of the 1-1 draw. Speaking straight after the game at St Mary's, boss Hasenhuttl said: "Alex must be here definitely more professional and this is what I missed today in such a game. "I had one change (left) and we couldn’t take it because he didn’t say anything. "This is for me not acceptable." Asked what communication he has had with McCarthy during this week since the incident, Hasenhuttl said: “I was not perfect to do it (speak) after the game, immediately. I had not every information I should have, at that moment it's always the issue, after the game when you don't see everybody. "I hadn’t spoken with everybody. I would do it different, when I know more now about what happened on the pitch. "But now is not the time to speak about it anymore. It's gone. "We have concentration full on the next game. "We took a few good things from the last game to settle us and refocus us for the new challenge we are facing. "Definitely everybody is in good shape at the moment and it’s a pity Alex is out now. "I think also against Brighton he did a very good job and kept us in the game two or three times in a fantastic way. "What happened at the end was not right from my side.”
Alex McCarthy Southampton

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl provides update on Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy injuries #SAINTSFC

ALEX McCarthy is set to miss up to four weeks with a hamstring injury, boss Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed. The club's first-choice keeper this season suffered the problem during last weekend's 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. The 32-year-old played on despite the injury, conceding a 98th-minute equaliser to Neal Maupay. And Hasenhuttl confirmed McCarthy will now spend some time on the sidelines. Second choice Fraser Forster is also unavailable for Saturday's trip to Arsenal, meaning new signing Willy Caballero, who was this week drafted in as a free agent, looks set for his debut. "Alex is out for three or four weeks," said Hasenhuttl. "Fras tried this week, but it’s still a bit too early for him, so he will also still not make it to the game. "That’s the reason why we signed Willy and we are happy to have him here." Asked to explain the nature of Forster's injury, Hasenhuttl added: "Fraser Forster tried it this week. He has a problem near his hamstring or his hip muscle. "It would be for the weekend I think a little bit too early, but he will not be that long out."

#PLStories- Tottenham Hotspur match against Brighton in doubt #THFC

ALBION's match against Tottenham is in doubt after the club called off their Europa Conference League match due to a “number of positive Covid-19 cases at the club”. Tottenham are scheduled to travel to the Amex Stadium for the club's Premier League fixture against Albion on Sunday. This is now in doubt as Spurs' match against Rennes tomorrow night was called off due to a number of covid cases being reported at the club. A spokesman for Spurs said: "We can confirm that our UEFA Europa Conference League Group G home fixture against Stade Rennais will not take place tomorrow after a number of positive COVID-19 cases at the Club. "Discussions are ongoing with UEFA and we shall provide a further update on this fixture in due course. "Additionally, following discussions with the Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) and DCMS advisers, the Club has been advised to close the First Team area of its Training Centre at this time, in the interests of the health and safety of players and staff. "All other areas of the Training Centre remain operational." Albion drew their last game in the Premier League against Southampton after Neal Maupay's late equaliser cancelled out Armando Broja's opener. Spurs won their last game in the league against Norwich 3-0.
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl believes Shane Long plays an important role at Saints #SAINTSFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl insists he has no plans to let "important" Shane Long leave the club in January, despite the striker's lack of game-time this season. The Republic of Ireland international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bournemouth, has played just 65 minutes of football for Saints this season, across three appearances. Only one of those games has come in the Premier League, when the 34-year-old came off the bench in the defeat to Wolves back in September. Since, Long has been an unused substitute for eight of the subsequent nine top-flight matches, left out of the squad on the other occasion. The striker was set to make his 230th appearance for the club on Saturday, stripped and ready to come on during the closing stages against Brighton. However, after the Seagulls equalised, Hasenhuttl opted against introducing Long. Saints have struggled for goals this season, following the summer departure of Danny Ings. Only Wolves and Norwich have netted fewer in the Premier League than Saints' 14 so far. Asked how much Long can help the club's other strikers, boss Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo: "Yes, sure he can help them and I am very happy to have him in my squad. “It was close for him to start against Liverpool. I had him in my mind because it was a good game for him. “Then finally I decided to give the young players a chance because I thought it was a game where they can learn a lot. “But, definitely, he is important for them. “What he can do best is definitely work with his effort, his professionalism with the young lads. He is a good role model I think, one of the good role models we have in our team." Asked if he may have to have a conversation with Long ahead of the January transfer window regarding his playing time, Hasenhuttl added: "No, because I think the clear message, especially for an experienced player is that they have to accept the different role they have when they are getting older. “I was playing until I was 37 years old and, especially in my last years, I was very often only a joker and helped the team when they needed me for 10 or 15 minutes. “This is the job you have to do then. This time will come for everybody who plays long because it is normal situation in every club that the older players are stepping back and that the job is done from the young ones. “They still have an important role to play in a club, in a team, in a dressing room – to be positive with us, to support everybody and this is a job he does perfectly."
Nathan Tella

#PLStories- Nathan Tella reveals Willy Caballero has looked good in training with Southampton squad #SAINTSFC

NATHAN Tella is excited to see new signing Willy Caballero in action, with the goalkeeper having made a good early impression at Saints. Caballero, 40, arrived at the club this week on a one-month deal, following injuries to the club's two most senior goalkeepers in Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy. That left Harry Lewis as the only other first-team keeper on the books, the 23-year-old having not yet made his Premier League debut. Caballero was a free agent, having left Chelsea over the summer. The Argentina international's glittering CV includes a long career in Spain, before spending three years at Manchester City and four with Chelsea. He was the penalty shoot-out hero in winning the League Cup with City, before claiming FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League glory during his time at Stamford Bridge, albeit as an unused substitute in those finals. Asked how Caballero had settled in at Saints, his new teammate Tella told the Daily Echo: "He’s trained with us the past two days. He’s looked very good. "It’s nice to have someone there as well with a lot of experience. "He’s here to help us pick up points and get back further up the table, where we feel like we deserve to be. "It’s just nice to have him because we’ve got quite a young team, quite a young defence and it will be nice for him to just pass that experience. "He communicates a lot to the back four, which is good. That is something we need. "I’m looking forward to seeing him play at the weekend, if he plays." Caballero could debut for Saints away at Arsenal on Saturday (3pm).
Armando Broja

#PLStories- Chelsea loanee Armando Broja reveals his ‘crazy’ time at Saints #SAINTSFC #CHELSEAFC

LOANEE Armando Broja described his first few months at Saints as "crazy", adding: "I'm just trying to improve every day." Broja, who is at Saints on a season-long loan from Chelsea, is currently the club's top scorer this term. That is after his impressive opener during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Brighton, taking his tally for the campaign to five. The 20-year-old scored twice on his debut, in the 8-0 Carabao Cup win at Newport County, before also netting against Leeds United and Burnley in the Premier League. Broja has been largely restricted to a role as substitute this season, with Che Adams and Adam Armstrong often preferred. However, the Albania international grabbed his chance from the off against Brighton, in just his fifth start for the club. His goal looked like it would be the winner, until Neal Maupay popped up with an equaliser in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time. Assessing his time at Saints so far, Broja told the Daily Echo: "I’m really enjoying it. "It’s obviously my first season in the Premier League. It’s been crazy. "I’m a young player and it’s amazing for everyone to be able to have this opportunity to be in the Premier League and gain experience and become a better player and work with better players. "It’s a dream come true. I’m just trying to improve every day and just learn." He added: "Of course there’s always competition. It’s the Premier League, it’s the most difficult league, there’s always going to be competition in the team. "It’s good. I’ll just keep my head down and try and help out the team as much as possible and I was thankful that I got a goal (on Saturday), but the main thing is the team. It was just a shame that we couldn’t take the three points." Reflecting on the late Brighton equaliser, Broja, who had already been replaced by Armstrong when Maupay found the net, said: "Of course it’s disappointing. It’s a big blow to concede to a goal like that. "It’s obviously not the best thing for us, but I think our overall performance was really good. "I think we controlled the game, we dominated the game, it’s just unfortunate to concede a goal right at the end. "It’s not what you want. We just need to keep pushing forward, improving and working hard." He added: "It’s the Premier League, anything can happen, it’s the best league in the world. "One chance and it’s a goal. It’s not ideal for us. "We dominated the game and that’s the thing, when you concede a goal like that, basically the last kick of the game, it was a shame obviously after what I think was a dominant performance from us. "But we’re just going to keep pushing forward and onto Arsenal next week."
William Smallbone Southampton

#PLStories- Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone admits shock after losing all hair #SAINTSFC

SAINTS midfielder Will Smallbone has opened up on a tough year, which saw him both battling a serious knee injury as well as losing all his hair. The 21-year-old had just fought his way back into Saints' starting XI, when disaster struck in January 2021. The young midfielder ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during a Premier League contest at Leicester City. Despite initially attempting to play on, Smallbone was forced off just past the hour mark at King Power Stadium and would not return to the pitch for Saints for nine months. "It's never a good time to rupture your ACL," Smallbone said in an interview with Saints' matchday programme. "But especially for me, I'd got back in the team after a few quad injuries and then on my first start (in four months), to do my ACL is not ideal. It was very tough. "Even when the injury happened, I still didn't think it was as bad as it ended up being. I carried on playing. "To get the scan results the following day, straight away you're thinking that's six to nine months that I can't play football. "It's such a hard thing to hear. On such a high the day before, to then be told that information was such a low the day after. Everything changes." He continued: "After the surgery, for six weeks I couldn't do anything for myself. Luckily my mum came down and lived with me, which she was buzzing about! "I had her and my girlfriend to help me. They were both great in those tough times." As Smallbone battled with the reality he would not be playing football again for a significant period of time, another hurdle presented itself. The Republic of Ireland under-21 international explained: "Alopecia is something I've had to deal with alongside my injury. "I first had a really small patch of hair missing, no-one would ever really notice. It was the Leicester game, where in a few photos you could see a bigger patch appearing. "Now it's actually growing back, but to lose it all is very tough. "Alongside such a big injury, it probably couldn't have happened at a worse time for me personally, to have both of these things going on. "The doctors can't say if they are linked. "Because of the injury and the stress of being out for so long, they can't say if that caused it, but the timings line up. It would make sense for them to coincide. "Mine was a gradual, steady increase of how bad it was. It started off as a really small patch of hair I was missing, which slowly grew and then eventually just started falling out from all sides. "The doctor's advice was just to shave it because eventually it was going to get to that anyway." He continued: "When it first happened, it's a tough thing to deal with. "But at the end of the day, it's just hair. I suppose I'm in a situation where I'm playing on TV and there's kids watching, who made have to deal with the same thing. "It's to show that it isn't the end of the world. "Sometimes, in life, you have to get on with difficult things that are thrown at you. "The best thing people did was try not to treat me any differently or act like too much had changed. The best thing everyone did was to act normal around me. "Obviously now everyone can make jokes, because I've come to terms with it. But no-one ever made me feel like it was weird, or something to be ashamed of. "You just have to embrace it. Obviously in life things are going to happen that you have no control over. In an ideal world, I would not have lost my hair, and no-one would lose their hair to alopecia. But the best thing you can do is take it in your stride. "I'd be lying if I said I was always positive about my situation. It was such a shock. To go from having a full head of hair to having none in such a short space of time was quite a big thing to deal with. "There were many down days, especially at the start. It's such a personal thing. "You speak to people about it, but they don't necessarily understand it because it hasn't happened to them. "I had such good support around me - my family and at the club - to just get on with it and use it as the next challenge to overcome." Smallbone, who made his first-team return in the Carabao Cup clash at Chelsea in October, could feature when Saints head to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday (3pm), having been an unused substitute for the past four fixtures.

#PLStories- Willy Caballero delighted to join Southampton on one-month deal #SAINTSFC

SAINTS have announced the signing of experienced stopper Willy Caballero on a one-month contract. The former Manchester City and Chelsea man is set to arrive at St Mary’s as emergency cover, after Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster both picked up injuries in the past week. Caballero, 40, has been a free agent since his deal at Chelsea expired in the summer. Capped by Argentina five times at senior level, he has been training with AFC Wimbledon in a bid to keep up his fitness. Speaking to Goal back in August, Caballero revealed why he decided to leave Stamford Bridge. "Some people didn’t understand why I turned down a contract as a third goalkeeper," Caballero said. "I believe I am playing at this age because I have always been motivated. "As a third goalkeeper last season, I found it really tough. It was my first season as a third-choice goalkeeper. “I was losing my motivation at Chelsea. I believe for this reason to not renew with Chelsea, to try to find a new challenge to keep that passion alive inside." Caballero could now get the chance to become a temporary number one at Saints over the hectic festive schedule. He arrives to boost the goalkeeping department, with only Harry Lewis in his way as fully fit competition for a starting spot in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s starting XI. Caballero could make his debut for Saints on Saturday, with a trip to Arsenal in the Premier League. His most recent senior game came for Chelsea in the top flight at West Bromwich Albion in September 2020. Across his career in England, Caballero has played 34 games in the Premier League keeping 11 clean sheets. His deal at St Mary’s is set to officially expire on January 5.
Neal Maupay

#PLStories- Brighton striker Neal Maupay gives his verdict on Southampton draw #BHAFC

STRIKER Neal Maupay has delivered his verdict on Albion's draw against Southampton. The Frenchman, who scored the equalising goal late on was happy to see that the team did not give in a stayed in the game until the very end. Maupay said, “My performance wasn’t top and we struggled in the game but we never give up, that’s one of our big strengths. "Everyone fought to the end, even the lads who came on. Albion striker Neal Maupay battles for the ball, credit Liz Finlayson “In the first half we couldn’t match their intensity, they were winning all the 50-50 battles. But if you don’t fight in this league you’re not going to win and we were better in the second half. “I was very happy with the finish. It’s good to score last minute but I should have scored earlier when the keeper saved." Maupay has also suggested that Albion need to not worry about injured players, although he hopes they are back soon.
