• Tony Daley of Aston Villa put in a transfer request after not being picked by England
Aston Villa’s England winger Tony Daley shocked the football world by marching into manager Ron Atkinson’s office and demanding a transfer, which he was immediately given. Daley, 26, who had won seven England caps, was omitted from Graham Taylor’s squad for the world cup qualifier against Poland at Wembley.
Daley had an ineffective game against Spurs and asked for a move even before Atkinson announced he had been dropped for the game against Everton. Atkinson justified Villa’s demands of asking for £2 million for the wantaway star.
Ron Atkinson said “We are asking for the sort of fee other clubs are always asking of us. Daley has two years of his contract to run and should have his best days in front of him.”
