Jamie Carragher analyzes Everton mistakes that led to first Southampton win of the season
The Liverpool man credited the pair’s non-verbal communication and described the Saints strike as “great play” in the 1-0 win over Everton.
Carragher, who grew up as a Toffees fan, insisted he was “delighted” for Saints as their first three points lifted them off the bottom of the Premier League.
Russell Martin’s side had waited 10 matches for their first victory, despite previously going ahead in home games against Ipswich Town and Leicester City.
“It was huge, and I must say, Southampton and Ipswich were both obviously playing at the weekend,” said Carragher on Sky Sports.
MNF analysis of the Southampton winning goal on Saturday!pic.twitter.com/Y8ngvZEc6A
— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) November 4, 2024
“I was disappointed Leicester got the equaliser in some ways because I don’t like it when promoted teams come up and in game 10 still haven’t got three points.
“I was delighted for Southampton. I wanted Ipswich to hang on, it didn’t happen for them but this was a huge moment for them (Saints) in the season.
“You don’t know what it will mean at the end of the year and it wasn’t a great game but I think in some ways it encapsulated what the Premier League’s about.
“From one end, Everton think they can go and win the game, and then the other end, Southampton, come from nowhere and get it.
“We know how strong Everton are set-piece-wise and we know how poor Southampton are set-piece-wise – Beto’s got to score,” added Carragher.

“But the interesting thing in the 85th minute is you see these Everton players doing a 100m sprint to get back, they want to keep the clean sheet.
“Mykolenko, Everton’s left-back, finds himself in right-back. He hasn’t done anything wrong, they had a set piece and they’re all out of position.
“There’s a knock-on effect where he’s out of position and Everton have everybody almost back behind the ball but they’ve got two left midfielders.
“The ball gets switched across and they forget that someone needs to fill in, so they now push out leaving a huge space here for Sugawara on that far side.
“When we talk about communication in football, we always talk about what you’re saying, this goal is all about eye contact.
“He doesn’t look at the ball, he’s looking in the box but there’s no one in the box. No one is making a move yet. Then he makes eye contact with Armstrong.
“Ashley Young is looking over his left shoulder the wrong way, his body position is wrong because they communicate not through words but eye contact.
“He knows he’s now got to play that ball in there and Ashley Young just finds himself… he’s been done. It’s great play from Southampton.”
‘Nowhere near’ – Russell Martin’s one-sentence Mateus Fernandes transfer warning says it all
Portuguese youth ace Fernandes, 20, arrived at St Mary’s from Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP for a modest initial fee of around £15million in August.
Fernandes has already become a star in the Saints side, starting each of the last seven Premier League matches for new boss Martin.
Interest in him was such that when Saints landed his signature, a club source claimed scouts of other Premier League outfits communicated their surprise.
Fernandes penned a five-year deal, keeping him under contract on the South Coast until 2029, and scored his first goal at Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup.
Emerging academy star Tyler Dibling has stolen most of the headlines at just 18 years old, with top clubs in the Premier League admiring his first starts.
However, Fernandes is equally likely to have caught the eye of recruitment teams. Martin is one step ahead and has already sent out a warning.
He was asked about the youngster’s contribution in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Everton, in which Fernandes played an integral role in the counter-attack winner.
“Amazing player. Brilliant. Top young man. Top talent but nowhere near ready to play for anyone else, he needs a good couple of years here for us first,” he quipped.

— £🇨🇲 (@SotonWill) November 3, 2024
Fernandes averages 9.1 attacking duels per 90 minutes this season, which ranks him as 22nd of all players in the Premier League.
He ranks 24th in progressive runs averaging more than two a match and his 64.7 per cent defensive duel success rate is seventh best of players his age.
Southampton’s transfer policy means they have to be open to selling some of their players for inflated fees when the time is right.
Ultimately, they have signed some of the hottest prospects in Europe over the last few years in the likes of Fernandes, Romeo Lavia and Tino Livramento.
The latter two combined sold for more than £80million to clubs competing in Europe and it does not represent a failure of ambition, providing it is reinvested.
Being able to demonstrate a pathway to young talent is integral to convincing them to take what they may perceive as a risk and join Saints in the first place.
But Martin has been steadfast in his demand that signings coming to St Mary’s must want to play for Saints and not see the club as a stepping stone.
“We won’t just sign players who want to play in the Premier League and earn lots of money, there is a balance to be had,” said Martin this summer.
“So far, we have signed players who are desperate to be here and don’t just see this as a place where they can come to earn a move to another club.”
Beating relegation and surviving in the Premier League will be the most certain way to guarantee the future of the side’s best players.
The offer of the Premier League’s demand, exposure and wages in addition to the club’s cash flow is the best way to keep the likes of Fernandes.
Troy Deeney admits thinking Aaron Ramsdale move from Arsenal to Southampton was a mistake
Deeney, who scored 47 goals in the top-flight, credited Aaron Ramsdale and Taylor Harwood-Bellis for their part in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Everton.
Ramsdale made five saves to help preserve a first clean sheet of the season while defender Harwood-Bellis was involved in the winning goal.
Deeney selects his Premier League team of the week each week for BBC Sport and has picked Saints players for the first time this campaign.
On Ramsdale, he said: “I thought he made a mistake leaving Arsenal to go to Southampton but I understand the logic behind it.

— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) November 5, 2024
“I don’t think he’ll end up with many clean sheets and he rode his luck a few times against Everton – but probably made Southampton’s save of the season.
“That was from Michael Keane’s header which would have changed the focus of the match. He was a big part in why they won the game.”
Assessing Harwood-Bellis, Deeney added: “He’s had a tough time this season getting to grips with the Premier League but he was really good against Everton.
“He was brave on the ball and defending when he needed to. Southampton’s players have to realise that you have to dig in at times – and he epitomised that.”
Ramsdale and Harwood-Bellis are joined by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur’s Dominic Solanke and AFC Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.
Saints are looking to follow up their first win of the league season when they visit bottom-placed Wolves at Molineux on Saturday, November 9 (3pm).

‘We expected to win today’ – Leicester boss Steve Cooper on 1-1 draw at Ipswich
Ipswich Town were on course for their first Premier League win of the season following Leif Davis’ fantastic 55th minute finish, but Kalvin Phillips was sent off for a second yellow card moments after a Conor Chaplin penalty appeal was waved away and the Foxes’ late pressure told when substitute Jordan Ayew equalised in the fourth minute of stoppage-time.
“We obviously came here to win,” said Cooper, whose side remain five points above the Blues in the table following a 1-1 draw.
“Please don’t think I’m saying this with any arrogance, but we expected to win today. We really wanted to come with that mentality. And I say that respectfully. But a draw is what it ended up being and it’s a much better result for us than for Ipswich, no doubt about that.
“Performance-wise we started the game well, ended the game well, and we knew that if we played close to our levels with the players that we have then we could be the superior team in the game.
“We expected Ipswich to press us a little bit more than what they did and maybe that’s why we dropped off our intensity a little bit and sort of fell into what Ipswich wanted and allowed them to get a little bit of hope in the game. There were spells where we had to concede a bit of territory.
“Second half we could have started better, but I wouldn’t say we were miles the second best team. They scored a goal of great quality, no doubt about that, that can happen in this league, but we settled, responded well in showing composure, forced the red card, which I’m told could have come a little bit earlier, but okay, no problem, and we were becoming the dominant team again. Obviously that was always going to be the case against 10 men and Ipswich protecting a 1-0.
“Facundo (Buonanotte) had a good chance in the latter stages. Jordan (Ayew), with his first touch, had a chance as good as the one he scored. We just needed to keep going. Buouba’s (Soumare) done amazing, Vards (Jamie Vardy) and Jordan have combined with great excellence and experience in a real chaotic moment. They would have known there wouldn’t be too many more opportunities and they showed great composure.
“A draw is what it is, we have to accept it. A point away from home in the Premier League, even though we’re disappointed given the intention was to come here and win, we have to accept is not the end of the world. Out of the two teams it’s a better result for us.”
Asked what he made of the penalty appeal, that Blues boss Kieran McKenna fumed over post-match, Cooper replied: “For us or them? I can’t remember. I didn’t see it, sorry. Oh, I do remember, it was from a set-piece, a free-kick, wasn’t it? Yeah. No, I didn’t see it. I remember the moment though.”
Russell Martin explains why Lallana was replaced at half-time after first win of the season against Everton
Lallana, 36, was replaced by Joe Aribo after feeling a problem with his groin during Southampton’s 1-0 win over the Toffees.
The former England international looked in pain as he left St Mary’s with his family following Southampton’s first win of the Premier League campaign.
Martin praised the impact his substitutes made – it was Yukinari Sugawara who laid the ball across for Adam Armstrong’s late winner.
Asked for more information about Lallana’s withdrawal, Martin said: “(It’s) nothing serious but he just felt his groin a little bit so we’ll assess that.

“He’s been massive for us with the way he takes the ball and is so brave. He’s a beautiful footballer to watch and he gave some brilliant moments today.
“He couldn’t continue so it was disappointing. The subs impacted the game and that’s all you can ask for I think.
“At times of season, I’ve made subs that perhaps, when you look at it with hindsight, which is a beautiful thing, I could have made them a bit later.
“I’d already had that in mind and I should have changed that. Today they had a brilliant impact. Yuki (Sugawara) got an assist and looked fresh.
“Tyler (Dibling) was great when he came on and then Lesley (Ugochukwu) and Paul (Onuachu) helped to shore it up.
“Joe Aribo had some tough moments today but what he gives us out of possession and his willingness to still take the ball is huge.”
Lallana has made six Premier League appearances for Saints since rejoining the club on a one-year deal this season.
Martin is expected to give a further update on Lallana’s availability for Southampton when he previews their trip to Wolves next week.
‘A big relief’ – Russell Martin assesses first Premier League win as Saints boss (against Everton)
Adam Armstrong scored the only goal in the 85th minute of a tense encounter, which saw a swift Beto equaliser ruled out by VAR for offside.
It ended Southampton’s 22-match winless run in the top flight and was the club’s latest winning goal in the Premier League since December 2018.
Three points also lifted Saints off the bottom of the league table with Wolves playing in the evening kick-off and handed Martin a timely boost.
“It was a big relief, happiness, gratitude and pride in the players and the staff and the supporters and the owners and the board,” said Martin.

“We’ve been in a really tough period so for the guys to stick with… you guys spend a bit of time at the training ground and stuff and it’s never felt any different.
“The cloud of not having a win has hung over things but the way they work, the way they train and the way they interact with each other, they’re amazing.
“They’re an amazing group to work with. I love them and I love being here so I want to drag it out for as long as I can. A win will certainly help that.”
“We’ve been on the wrong end of a few tight ones,” added Martin, assessing the VAR decision which ultimately helped Saints to the win.

“It’s a big bit of learning for us as well because it was so tight and we’d just scored and everyone’s caught up in the emotion.
“That could have completely taken this out and it would have been horrific feelings. It wasn’t a nice feeling for us for a couple of minutes it was happening.
“Then after that, they threw everything at us and they’re a good team. Strong team, organised and make it so difficult for you.
“I think some of the football we played today was outstanding. A few sticky moments when they took the ball off us because they were well-drilled.
“We recovered well from them and everyone stuck at it and we scored a goal from brilliant courage and composure in our own box.
“Defending the set play, we head it down rather than clear it and play a one-two together for Matty Fernandes to drive up. I’m really proud of the players.”
“The players have been criticised so much sometimes for stuff they’re trying that hasn’t quite come off so I hope they get some credit when it does go right.”
