James Ward Prowse

#PLStories- #RalphHasenhuttl says #JamesWardProwse will be fit to feature against Everton #SAINTSFC #EVERTONFC

BOSS Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed skipper James Ward-Prowse had been in training with Saints all week and would be available for selection at Everton on Saturday. The England midfielder has been struggling with a knee problem which had prevented him playing in the St Mary’s side’s pre-season games. But Hasenhuttl confirmed the England midfielder would be fit to face the Toffees in their season opener at Goodison Park. Asked about Ward-Prowse ahead of the trip to Merseyside, Hasenhuttl said: “He is going to be okay. “He trained for the whole week and I am looking forward to having him back on Saturday.” Only youngster Will Smallbone remains out for Hasenhuttl’s side with a long-term knee injury at present. Assessing the squad as a whole, the Austrian boss said: “Everybody is fit. After this hard and tough pre-season, this is a good signal. “We worked good with them, had a good balance with pushing them hard and also recovering in the right moments. “The worst you can get is if you are training very hard for four or five weeks and then get an injury in the last week, so touch wood, that did not happen.”
Brendan Rodgers

#PLStories- #BrendanRodgers wants #JannikVestergaard to play at weekend #LCFC

LEICESTER City boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted “there’s nothing finalised yet” but hopes outgoing Saints defender Jannik Vestergaard could be available for the weekend. The great Dane is up in Leicester today completing a move to the FA Cup winning Foxes and would re-join ex-Saints teammate Ryan Bertrand upon completion of the deal. With a serious injury to Wes Fofana that will rule the Frenchman out until 2022, Rodgers is understandably keen to get another experienced defender through the door – hence the speed of this move materialising. It’s only a £15m fee for the 29-year-old European Championship 2020 semi-finalist, and they’ll hope to get maximum value for their money with an appearance in their Premier League season opener at home to Wolves on Saturday. Speaking ahead of the match, Rodgers admitted: “There’s nothing finalised as of yet, but yeah as soon as that happens, and hopefully it does, we’ll be able to confirm that.” Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers Asked if he hopes he will be available for selection, he added: “Yeah, we’ll have to wait and see, as I said the clubs have been in contact. “We’ve got permission for him to be up here (in Leicester) and now hopefully everything can be organised and then we’ll see if he’s available for the weekend.” Saints don’t meet Leicester until the start of December when Rodgers’ side, who defeated Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend, visit St Mary’s.

Brighton's Leo Ostigard is set to make his debut for Stoke City tonight (7:45pm) in their Carabao Cup tie against League One side Fleetwood at the bet365 stadium. The 21-year-old joined the Potters from Albion on a season-long loan after signing a new one-year deal at the Seagulls prior to leaving. The last time he played at the bet365 stadium he was on the winning side as he picked up an assist for Coventry in their 3-2 win over the Potters in April, with former Albion striker Viktor Gyokeres scoring the winner. Stoke boss Michael O’Neill was delighted to have signed Ostigard.  He said: “Leo is keen to develop and improve by playing first-team football and we are delighted to have secured his services because he was attracting a great deal of interest after doing so well for Coventry. “His arrival strengthens our defensive resources and I’ve no doubts he will be a key addition to our squad.”
Adam Armstrong

#PLStories- What Players and Managers said about Southampton signing #AdamArmstrong #SAINTSFC

SAINTS have announced the capture of striker Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers on a four-year deal.  Armstrong follows Chelsea youngster Armando Broja through the door, who joined on a loan basis, to seal two forwards in one day ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.  The 24-year-old comes with a reputation for prolific goal scoring in the Championship, but will face a task to bring that to the top-flight and lead Saints up the table.  With bags of pace and promise, we detail exactly what you need to know about Armstrong and what some of his former managers and teammates have said.  Read more Southampton FC sign Adam Armstrong from Blackburn for £15m Saints seal loan signing of Chelsea striker Armando Broja WATCH: Saints' new striker signing Armando Broja goals video Who is Adam Armstrong? Born in West Denton, Newcastle, Adam Armstrong is a product of the Toon’s academy. The 24-year-old striker was born on February 10 1997 and is just 5foot 7’ tall. Due to his height, it is unsurprising to hear the forward is known for being nippy and having bags of pace. After graduating at Newcastle’s academy in 2014, Armstrong had loan spells with Coventry, Barnsley, Bolton and Blackburn – before joining the latter on a permanent basis. Armstrong has had a glistening youth international career with England having represented at every youth level between under-16 and under-21. He is a FIFA Under-20 World Cup winner (2017) - England's first win in a global tournament since their World Cup victory of 1966 - as well as winning the UEFA European under-17 Championship (2014) and the Toulon Tournament (2018). The striker has also captained the Young Lions. Adam Armstrong joins Saints in a £15m deal from Championship outfit Blackburn The recent 2020-21 and 2019-20 seasons Adam Armstrong has been on the radar of Premier League clubs after scoring 28 goals in 40 Championship matches last term – despite Blackburn finishing 15th in the table. That total was the second highest in the whole division, with only Brentford hotshot Ivan Toney scoring two more in a team that was eventually promoted. He also added five assists. Armstrong scored seven goals in the last three fixtures alone, with three hattricks and four more braces over the course of the season. The striker also captained the side on a handful of occasions. To add, in the prior 2019-20 season Armstrong scored 16 goals and registered six assists whilst not missing a single game of the season, and operating often in a right-wing or left-wing role. Loan spells from Newcastle As a youngster, Armstrong made 21 brief appearances for his initial parent side but failed to register a goal – before going out on loan to League One Coventry City in the 2015-16 season. Here, he scored 20 in 40 league matches during his first regular spell of senior football, under his Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray too, as the Sky Blues finished 8th in the division. The following season he struggled to score regularly in the Championship with Barnsley but netted half-a-dozen and showed promise, before scoring one in 20 with Bolton in the same league during the 2017-18 campaign. Halfway through the season, Newcastle moved him back to League One where he scored nine in 21 for Blackburn and helped them seal promotion back to the Championship – and inspiring Rovers to make his acquisition a permanent one. His Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom said: “Nobody works harder. We are doing lots of things with him, watching videos to try and open his eyes to different types of goals he needs to score. “We have jumped up a league, he has jumped up a league, and he doesn’t just want to be an impact player. “He wants to score different types of goals, and is definitely a player people will try and target and try to stop.” Current Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray has said: “I think he’s an amazing player, and if he had three years left no-one would be getting him for less than £25m, those sort of numbers, yet he hasn’t. But you have to pay the price. “Adam knocks on my door every day and let me put on record he’s a fantastic kid, there should be no criticism of him, he trains every day and does his best.” Former England international Joe Cole, who played with Armstrong at Coventry City, praised the forward saying: “Armstrong reminds me of [Sergio] Aguero, he’s of the same build and he’s hungry for goals. “In a lovely way he’s selfish for goals and has the ingredients to be a top player and go on to score many more goals.” Adam Armstrong played alongside Joe Cole at Coventry City Finally, Wayne Rooney singled Armstrong out for praise during an England camp and the young striker himself said: “I played against him (Rooney) at Old Trafford and he said he liked the way that I always got across the defenders. “He said that the Manchester United team had watched me in the clips before the game – that was a massive confidence booster for me to have someone like that say that. “He came into our meeting and answered questions from all the lads and then I managed to speak with him one-on-one.”
Adam Armstrong

#PLStories- #AdamArmstrong says Saints are perfect for my next step #SAINTSFC

Armstrong completed a move from Blackburn Rovers today, for a fee the Daily Echo understands to be around £15million. The 24-year-old scored 29 goals in the Championship for Rovers last season, but is now back in the Premier League again having last played in the top flight with Newcastle in the 2014-15 campaign. Discussing his move to Saints, Armstrong said: "It’s unbelievable to be here – such a massive club with a great fanbase and it’s just something that I’m really looking forward to. “I thought it was perfect as my next step. I wanted to get back to the Premier League from what I’ve done for Blackburn, so I’m over the moon.” Armstrong became the second striker to join Saints today, following the arrival of Armando Broja on loan from Chelsea. They will compete with the likes of Che Adams, Shane Long and Michael Obafemi for a starting berth. However, Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray yesterday confirmed the club are interested in bringing Obafemi to Ewood Park, to replace Armstrong. Some reports suggest Saints and Blackburn have agreed a fee for Obafemi, with the striker now to decide if he wants to leave. Nathan Tella, Theo Walcott and Nathan Redmond were all used as striker options at Saints at times last season.
Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- #GrahamPotter provides pre season insight after Brighton’s loss to Getafe #BHAFC

There is one plus to the somewhat against-the-clock nature of the pre-season Albion are just completing. If those of us who follow them closely on a daily basis are not totally sure how they will look at Burnley, what chance does Sean Dyche have? Graham Potter’s side played a bit of catch-up with three key men in the final friendly of the summer. Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster came back after minor injuries and Leandro Trossard buzzed and fizzed in the second half. But it feels like Albion have busy days ahead of them at Lancing before opening their fifth Prem campaign at Turf Moor on Saturday. Certainly they will need to display the purpose, urgency and energy which were on show in the second half against their Spanish opponents. Getafe won the contest with two free-kick goals and some streetwise defending. Their movement and passing caused the hosts problems at times in the first half. Their goalkeeper David Soria caused them frustration in the second. Ironically, the first goal by the men from the Madrid satellite town had a bit of Burnley about it. A cheaply won free-kick out wide which was delivered at pace and turned home by defender Erick Cabaco. The second, against the run of play, was an exquisite curler over the wall by David Timor. But it came from a free-kick conceded just outside the box, centrally, when Albion should have cleared the danger following a Robert Sanchez save. There was some good stuff going forward in the second half as Albion swarmed towards a quarter-full but very enthusiastic North Stand Trossard turned on trickery and gave the whole thing a lift. But we know he can do that – and it does not necessarily mean he will do it again in the next match. Dunk and Webster will be pillars at Turf Moor. In a three with Joel Veltman? That was at least how things started on Saturday. If so, is Enock Mwepu the wing-back option? He has done well in pre-season but, although he found lots of space in that area early on, it does not seem his best role. Adam Lallana has looked as good you would hope for in pre-season and was applauded off as an array of substitutions were made. He was instrumental playing at the front of a diamond at Luton but dropped deeper and made things tick here. A fit and on-form Lallana will be massive for Albion but in which role? He isn’t really being talked about too much but the form and fitness of Solly March is another plus given he is coming back from quite a lengthy injury absence. Aaron Connolly led the attack and, while that may not be the case in the Prem opener, it is worth remembering he caused Burnley a few problems in the 1-1 draw at Turf Moor last season and scored on his previous visit. Trossard would appear to have given himself more chance of a start in East Lancs than Alexis Mac Allister, who was a surprise inclusion for the first 45 minutes. Many teams are a bit behind where they would normally be this pre-season. That appeared to be the case for Burnley as they lost 2-0 to Cadiz on Saturday. But a pattern of not scoring against a very well-organised team packed in low (around former Albion target Ignasi Miquel in this case) and of conceding to a set-piece was a reminder of the battles ahead. Potter said: “I thought we got the minutes we wanted to, especially with Dunky and Webby and even Joel. “That was positive. Everybody else stepped up as well and, against a well-organised side who are starting on Friday, it was a relatively decent game. “Obviously in the second half we were better than we were in the first half. “There are things to do, things to work on, but we will have a couple of days analysing everything and prepare for the game against Burnley.” Percy Tau appears set to join the list of departures and talk of signings will continue. Especially up front. Summer signing Mwepu has made a midfield impression and has some energy about him. Potter said: “He has got that in abundance. He brings us that little bit of something different. “He hits the box, he can play in numerous positions and we need to find out the best one for us given the game. “He did really well as a first match here, he scored against Luton, so he will give us a bit of versatility give us some options. “He will get better and we will get better the more he is here with us.” Soria, who had unsuccessful trials at Leicester, Birmingham and Stoke as a youngster, seemed to get a touch on a searing angled effort by Mwepu which would have seen him add to his strike at Kenilworth Road. LEWIS DUNK CAN'T SEE HIMSELF LEAVING BRIGHTON The keeper’s best save was to tip over as Trossard went on a dribble, lost the ball, won it back again and then curled towards the top corner. He also blocked a Veltman blast and got his foot to a very late Trossard effort. The closest Albion came was at 1-0 down when the big two at the back rumbled forward for a set-piece. BRIGHTON HOPE FOR MORE LEANDRO TROSSARD MAGIC Dunk seemed to be the blocker as Pascal Gross whipped a free-kick in from the right. Webster was in space and climbed high but his header came down off the bar, with Dunk then unable to get good contact on his follow-up shot. GRAHAM POTTER SAYS BRIGHTON DESERVED TO SCORE AGAINST GETAFE Maupay was involved in a late incident with defender Chema and was booked for a foul off the ball. Tempers flared at that point and it all got a bit feisty. The match was not quite as friendly as billed in that instance and one or two others. But that’s fine. It needed to be competitive at this stage of summer. The final pre-season outing has left a bit to think about. Albion: Sanchez; Veltman (Ostigard 89), Dunk (Moder 79), Webster (Duffy 79); Mwepu (Zeqii 89), Gross (Richards 79), Bissouma (Andone 89), Lallana (Alzate 67), March (Karbownik 89); Mac Allister (Trossard 46); Connolly (Maupay 67). Attendance: 7,091.
Tony Mowbray

#PLStories- Blackburn’s #TonyMowbray backs Saints’ #AdamArmstrong deal #SAINTSFC #BLACKBURNFC

BLACKBURN Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has offered an update on Adam Armstrong after Saints agreed a fee for his transfer, saying: “I’m not sure there’s not much to prevent that deal going through.” The 24-year-old striker scored 28 in 40 Championship matches for Rovers last season and has seen a bid reportedly worth up to £15m accepted for his services. Mowbray had said after their fixture against Swansea at the weekend that a club would have to match their valuation of the player soon to have any chance of acquiring him. Saints seem to have done that, with reports suggesting he will undergo a medical tomorrow before the deal is officially confirmed. Read more  Blackburn Rovers accept Saints bid for Adam Armstrong Saints closing in on loan deal for Chelsea's Armando Broja Report notes interest in Southampton striker Michael Obafemi Speaking at a press conference, Mowbray said: “Everything’s agreed, I’m not sure there’s not much to prevent that deal going through. “Adam’s fit, he’ll be doing his medical. Things moved in different directions after the last few days, ultimately as I said after the game the other day it’s only right that the club has valuation and it needed to be met. “Southampton are the team that ultimately came up with the deal that was right for this football club. I wish Adam well, he’s been in my office this morning. “As he went round the whole club, the kitmen the cleaners, the kitchen staff, everybody, and said his goodbyes and thank you’s, they all wished him well, he’s been brilliant for this football club.” Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray Saints are hoping Armstrong can fill the void left by top goalscorer Danny Ings after his shock Aston Villa exit prior to the Levante friendly last week. Armstrong is a former Newcastle academy player and did make several substitute appearances for the Toon in the Premier League, but joined Blackburn following a successful loan spell. Mowbray added: “For the supporters it’s disappointing but there will be someone out there who will step up and fill that void. “That’s the challenge for the players and coaching staff, to develop a way of playing without Adam Armstrong.”
Tony Mowbray

#PLStories- Blackburn’s #TonyMowbray confirms #MichaelObafemi interest #BLACKBURNFC #SAINTSFC

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Tony Mowbray has confirmed the club’s interest in Saints striker Michael Obafemi, admitting: “I have watched him for the last three months." Championship Rovers are set to lose Adam Armstrong to the Premier League side, with a fee agreed between the two sides and the 24-year-old set for a medical. Mowbray says any move for Republic of Ireland international Obafemi would be a permanent move, but is separate to the Armstrong negotiations, and a deal that Rovers will explore with the manager having watched him closely. “It’s something that’s been mooted, those sort of things become personal to the point the boy wants to make that move, his advisors have to see it as an opportunity,” Mowbray said. Read more  Blackburn Rovers accept Saints bid for Adam Armstrong Blackburn's Tony Mowbray says there's 'not much to prevent' Saints' Armstrong deal Saints closing in on loan deal for Chelsea's Armando Broja “If it’s one he sees as a good chance for him to play more regular football at a level he sees himself doing similar things to Adam and build his reputation. “It’s something we’re exploring but I won’t sit here and say that anything is happening, we will see in the next couple of days if anything materialises.” Obafemi only played four Premier League games last season after failing to develop quite how Saints would have hoped, given his 2019-20 breakthrough campaign. He did start in the final pre-season friendly alongside compatriot Shane Long though, and didn’t perform too badly in a difficult challenge against Spanish Super Cup winners. His best moment in a Saints shirt is likely his superb solo goal against Chelsea, during a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in December 2019. Mowbray added: “I have watched him for the last three months. Saints' Michael Obafemi in Premier League action last season “I was aware of him making his debut, he made quite a bit of noise a couple of years ago. “I have studied him a lot recently and I see similarities with Adam, he’s mobile, fast, can score, he’s a young boy but we use attributes to help the team play in a certain way. “He has the attributes that will help our team but it’s not something we should be saying is a done deal as I’ve not personally spoken to the player so let’s see what the next few days bring. “Until this deal goes through, the men in suits will do the numbers and then I’ll found out what the scope is.”
Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- Brighton’s #EnockMwepu earns praise from #GrahamPotter #BHAFC

Enock Mwepu has been backed to keep improving after a bright start to life with Albion. The summer signing from Salzburg showed signs of quality and versatility as the Seagulls lost to Getafe. He looks a certain starter when the Premier League season gets under way at Burnley on Saturday. Albion head coach Graham Potter said: “He brings us that little bit of something different. “He hits the box, he can play in numerous positions and we need to find out the best one for us given the game. BUSY NIGHT FOR NEW PREMIER LEAGUE REFEREE AS BRIGHTON PLAY GETAFE “He did really well as a first match here, he scored against Luton, so he will give us a bit of versatility give us some options. “He will get better and we will get better the more he is here with us.”
Sean Dyche Burnley

#PLStories- #SeanDyche on the potential return #AaronLennon #BURNLEYFC

BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche has not ruled out the possibility of Aaron Lennon returning to Turf Moor. The winger is back training with the Clarets after a year in Turkey’s top flight with Kayeserispor and played the final 18 minutes of the 2-0 defeat against Caidz on Saturday in the final public warm-up ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Dyche is in need of reinforcements in the wide areas and while he admitted it was initially a fitness arrangement with the 34-year-old, he could not discount the possibility he would put pen to paper on something more permanent. “We are actively looking for players,” Dyche said. “He’s someone we know well, who has done a good job for us in the past. “He’s someone I didn’t want to go in the first place. There’s a lot to that story, which everyone knows. He played quite a bit of football last year and is looking very fit and well. “He asked me if he could come back in and train and at the minute it’s just that and we’ll see where that leads to.” Dyche was boosted by the returns of both goalkeeper Nick Pope, after injury, and striker Chris Wood, following international duty at the Olympics with New Zealand, for the meeting with the La Liga side. “Popey’s had a good pre-season in the sense of coming back from his injury,” Dyche told the club. “It’s good for him to get his 90 minutes and good to see the fans back in as well. “We were just giving him (Wood) a taster today because he’s played plenty of football. I think he’s got the highest minutes in pre-season from playing over there so it was really to get him back involved.” “Vyds (Matej Vydra) has still got to get fit and sharp because he came back late and there’s another game on Tuesday (behind closed doors) that we will use wisely and make sure some of these players top up.” Matt Lowton was missing for Cadiz having been identified as a close contact of a Covid case.
Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- #GrahamPotter says Brighton happy to take on Getafe at Amex #BHAFC

The perils of arranging international friendly action in current circumstances was underlined yesterday. That was when Aston Villa had to cancel their fixture at home to Sevilla. The LaLiga Santander side pulled out due to Covid concerns, denying Villa income plus a key date in their build-up to the Premier League season. Albion begin their second decade at the Amex with a visit from a Getafe side coached by Michel, a stylish provider of tempting crosses from the right during his distinguished playing days with Real Madrid and Spain. Albion boss Graham Potter is in no doubt as to value of this evening’s fixture. He said: “It’s an important game for us as it’s our last friendly before the new season. “We want to try and improve on the Luton performance and the more minutes we can get into the players before Burnley the better, that’s why it’s a game we are looking forward to. “Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk and Leandro Trossard are all available having been unavailable for the last two games. “They have done a lot of work behind closed doors and in training and we will use Saturday to build things up.” Clearly Getafe were not the List A choice Albion had in mind as they planned a special event to mark ten years at their stadium. Months of discussions had taken place with their intended guests and contracts were ready. But the club concerned were not prepared to travel to the United Kingdom at this time. Albion are very pleased to have secured Getafe quite late in the day. Added intrigue is added by the fact the Seagulls are currently trying to sign their opponents’ prize asset Marc Cucurella. SKY SPORTS EYE BEN WHITE'S RETURN TO THE AMEX Juancar Navacerrada, who covers Getafe for Marca, says it is an important fixture for the visitors. He told The Argus: “It’s the last match of pre-season and Getafe will try to play an XI similar to that which plays against Valencia next Friday. “But it is also a match in which they will take care of playing time with the start of the league so close.” Getafe were not far above the drop zone last season. But Navacerrada believes they will offer a tougher test that some Albion fans might expect thanks to Michel’s arrival in charge. He said: “It will be a completely different Getafe to that of the last five years. “They will give more importance to possession of the ball, although they will maintain the intensity they had under former boss Jose Bordalas. “There is no doubt Getafe are building a good side.” One of the men to watch is no stranger to the Amex. Wideman Vitolo, who is on loan from Atletico Madrid, played for Sevilla at the Amex six years ago. But one familiar figure to some at Albion will not be present. Former Albion under-23s prospect Jack Harper is a Getafe player but little has been seen of him. He was a rising star when he arrived at the Seagulls in 2015. He has been loaned out to Racing Santander for the coming season, Navacerrada said: “Harper is an operation I don’t understand, personally. “He has been at Getafe for three years without playing a single minute. GRAHAM POTTER GLAD TO SEE BRIGHTON FANS RETURN “He arrived and has always been out on loan. “To be honest, I don’t think he will ever play for Getafe.” Serbian international centre-back Stefan Mitrovic is being tipped as one of the potential surprises of the league this season. Central midfielder Carlos Alena is another who might take the eye at the Amex. He has just signed a five-year deal after coming through the ranks at Barcelona.
