Carlo Ancelotti believes that Everton fighting until the final day of the season for European football signified a successful campaign for the club. The Italian completed a shock return to Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, leaving supporters surprised at a move which seemingly came out of the blue.
Carlo Ancelotti said: “I think each team has an objective, has a challenge to try and achieve. The objective for Real Madrid is to try and compete to win the Champions League, La Liga. The objective of Everton is to try and get into European football, to fight to try and get into European football. Each team has an objective. Success isn’t just winning trophies, success for a manager is to reach the objective that the club has. Everton doesn’t have the objective to win the Premier League, it has the objective to try and play in European football and we fought until the end. To get to the last game fighting for Europe, I think that was a success.”
Ancelotti was mainly asked about Real Madrid, and accepted the added responsibility that he would have on his return. The former Everton manager also opened up on the style of football he would like to play with the Spanish side.
Carlo Ancelotti added: “Coaching Real Madrid is a responsibility, a nice responsibility, as you are coaching the best club in the world. So it is normal that there is more responsibility than in other places. And I accept that. Football has changed in these last five years – it is more aggressive and organised. But our idea remains the same – to play attacking, spectacular football – what this club’s history and fans demand.”
