Harry Maguire delivered an outstanding performance for Manchester United, helping secure a 3-0 victory against Athletic Club in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final. The match, held at San Mames, saw Maguire transition from a defensive stalwart to a creative force, as he played a pivotal role in United’s commanding win.
Harry Maguire said: “It’s brilliant. I’m sure there’s a few nicknames out there for me. I found myself attacking the back post and I think Garna passed me the ball. It was nice to do a bit of dribbling out there and put in a great cross. We had a lot of bodies in the box so they must have trusted me to get that cross in. It was a nice feeling and it was a great header.”
Maguire added: “The first 20 minutes was difficult. The crowd was super loud, the intensity was high. They came after us, we made a few errors, we looked a little bit nervous at times in the first 20 minutes, but I thought we weathered the storm and we knew we’d get our chances and yeah, we was really clinical in that first half, so really pleasing to go to Old Trafford. The tie’s not done, we’ll be focused, we’ll be ready at Old Trafford next Thursday for the second leg and I’m sure Old Trafford will be like this. All the pressure will be on us now, everyone will expect us to go through to the final so next Thursday we need to make sure we prepare well prepare like we’ve done for the game and if we do we’ll give ourselves a great opportunity to reach the final. It’s been a great night for us but like I said, one foot in the final but it’s still not done.”
In the match against Athletic Club, Maguire, who recently earned the nickname ‘Harrydinho’ on social media for his impressive footwork, showcased his versatility by providing a crucial assist. His deft cross from the right flank was expertly flicked on by Manuel Ugarte, allowing Casemiro to head United into the lead. This goal sparked a three-goal blitz in the final 15 minutes of the first half, giving United a significant advantage heading into the second leg at Old Trafford.
Maguire’s performance was not only a testament to his adaptability but also highlighted the team’s clinical execution in the first half. Despite a challenging start, with Athletic Club applying pressure and creating a high-intensity atmosphere, United managed to weather the storm and capitalize on their opportunities.
As the team prepares for the return leg, Maguire emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and matching the fervent support experienced at San Mames. With expectations high, United will aim to secure their place in the Europa League final, building on the momentum from this impressive away victory.
