Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jeremy Sarmiento is set for a thrilling conclusion to his second season on loan in the Championship with Burnley. The Ecuadorian winger played a pivotal role in Burnley’s recent 5-0 victory over QPR, scoring twice to keep the Clarets in contention for the title. This win placed Burnley three points ahead of Leeds United, although Leeds still have a game in hand. With Leeds likely to clinch the Championship crown if they win their remaining matches due to superior goal difference, Sarmiento is determined to end the season on a high note.
Jeremy Sarmiento said: “It was an amazing way to close off our second to last game of the season. We have an objective. The first objective was to obviously get promoted and now we want to win the league. I’m delighted to get a couple of goals. It’s been a tough season on a personal note but I’m very happy for the guys and I’m always pushing my best to push the guys on even harder, even in training. I will always remember this game, the guys made it very special for me.”
Sarmiento’s journey this season has been marked by significant contributions both on and off the field. After spending pre-season with Brighton, he returned early from international duty at the Copa America to make an impression on manager Fabian Hurzeler and his staff. Despite turning down a holiday, he joined the pre-season trip to Tokyo, where he played a couple of half-games in a No.10 role for Albion. His performance in the Carabao Cup against Crawley further demonstrated his versatility and determination.
The winger’s loan spell at Burnley has been a learning experience, particularly under the guidance of Scott Parker, who has emphasized defensive duties—a skill highly valued by Hurzeler. Sarmiento’s ability to play various roles up the field, including as a false nine, winger, or No.10, adds to his appeal for Brighton’s future plans. With a contract extending to 2027, Sarmiento remains a promising asset for the Seagulls.
Jeremy Sarmiento said: “I can play anywhere up the field. Last time I was here with Roberto (De Zerbi), I played more like a false nine. I can do that, play on the wing or as a No.10. I can play either side, it varies.”
As Burnley prepares for their final game of the season against Millwall, Sarmiento is focused on securing victory in front of the home crowd, hoping to finish the season as champions. His recent performances have not only kept Burnley’s title hopes alive but also showcased his potential to be a key player for Brighton in the future.
Jeremy Sarmiento said: “I think everyone was expecting, after winning promotion in our last game, that we enjoyed the celebrations maybe a bit too much. We had a lot on the line, whether it’s the amount of games we’ve been unbeaten or the clean sheets (now 30). That’s what we wanted to carry on and keep doing the same thing and it’s worked out for us. We’ve got momentum right now and we want to carry it on, we want to win the last game of the season (against Millwall). It’s at home, so I’m sure the fans will be around us and it will be a great way to finish off the season with a win in front of everyone.”
