#PLStories- Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is inspiration to Ecuadorian Jeremy Sarmiento #BHAFC

Jeremy Sarmiento has revealed his colleague and best mate is inspiring him to shine for Albion and Ecuador. The winger and his family have been helping Moises Caicedo settle into English life after his move from South America. Sarmiento and Caicedo are close mates off the pitch and are currently away with their national team. Caicedo has made a huge impression with the Seagulls and is a mainstay of La Tri. He played the full game as Ecuador beat Cape Verde 1-0 in a friendly in Florida last night. Sarmiento has not reached that level yet and has been impeded by injury. But he is back in action after his latest hamstring issue, havving played the first half last night, and has set sights high. Caicedo spent the first half of last season on loan at Beerschot. Sarmiento said: “When I knew he was coming back from Belgium, from the first minute I was with him. “Helping him with whatever. “I also learn a lot from him on the pitch. “He is playing all the matches and he is tearing it up and that pushes me to be in the team with him on the same pitch. “It is fantastic to have a friend who I can share things with at Brighton and in the Ecuador squad.” Sarmiento was first to make his Prem debut – and was handed a first start at West Ham on December 1. A hamstring injury early in that game blew a big hole in his season. He suffered a similar, but less serious, setback when he suddenly pulled up when playing for the under-23s at home to Chelsea late in the campaign. While not a major blow, it was enough to end his club season. But Ecuador boss Gustavo Alfaro has used him as a sub in recent friendlies against Nigeria and Mexico in the United States. From New Jersey and Chicago, Ecuador have now moved south to Fort Lauderdale to play Cape Verde over the weekend. Sarmiento loves the fact they have stuck with him during his injury problems. He said: “When I made my debut with Brighton, from what they tell me, I think they were watching as well. “They got in contact with my dad, with the club, with me. “They offered me the chance to go to qualifiers against Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela. “I was surprised, to tell the truth. “It was very quick, I didn’t expect it. “But I could see they had this trust in me that Gustavo still has. “I thank him a lot, not only him but the staff and coaches as well. “I’ve had injuries and it has not been easy for me and they know I’m not at my maximum yet, still recovering. “But they still keep me in mind. “They still have this confidence in me. WHY BRIGHTON LOOKS RIGHT CHOICE FOR IN-DEMAND JULIO ENCISO “I’m very grateful for this chance to help the team get as far as possible. I’m happy.” Sarmiento was born to Ecuadorean parents in Madrid. He spent about a decade in London, followed by a stint in Lisbon playing for Benfica. Three countries were keen on getting him involved in their national set-ups. He said: “When I first came to Brighton, England called me and so did Spain. “But I always had this dream of representing my country and also my parents’ country and making them happy as well. “I feel more at home with the Ecuador national team. “The atmosphere there is different to, for example, people here. “Here people are colder. “There, you go in the changing room and everyone is dancing (laughs) and doing stuff, it’s good to be in this atmosphere. “My time with the Ecuador squad has been phenomenal.”

#PLStories- Promising Brighton attacker Jeremy Sarmiento admits frustration with another injury #BHAFC

ALBION forward Jeremy Sarmiento wants to have more playing time on the pitch. Sarmiento has laid out his plans going forward after an injury has hampered his season so far. The 19-year-old was expected to break through to the first team this season and did impress in his appearances in the Carabao Cup but an injury on his Premier League debut against West Ham has curtailed his progress. The winger told the club website: “The aim at Brighton is to keep impressing and keep getting more minutes under my belt. Brighton and Hove Albion's Jeremy Sarmiento (centre) is helped off the pitch after picking up an injury during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion at the London Stadium, London “I’ll back myself in any situation so if I keep doing well, then hopefully I can play more games. “The gaffer has told me to be myself, and repeat what I do in training in the games. “The team is heading in the right direction and although we haven’t always got the results we would have wanted, we have real energy to keep pushing.” On the international stage, Sarmiento has started to become a regular for Ecuador, despite playing for England as a youth player. The attacker switched allegiance at under 19 level after he stopped playing in Benfica during his contract situation. After joining Albion, Sarmiento was given a chance by Ecuador after making his debut against Swansea City. He said: “For Ecuador, I started the last two games I played in, in what is a whole new set-up, with a mix of experienced players and quite a few youngsters. “The coach spoke to me and said I’ve got the talent to come straight into the team and it’s great that he has such confidence in me. “Hopefully I can repay him with my performances.”

#PLStories- Ecuador boss tells Brighton attacking midfielder Jeremy Sarmiento to play with freedom #BHAFC

Jeremy Sarmiento has been told to play with freedom for his country. The Albion attacking midfielder was largely praised by observers – with one headline-making exception - as he made his first start for Ecuador. He played 76 minutes and was a bright spot of a somewhat laboured 1-0 win over bottom side Venezuela in the South American qualifying group for the World Cup. The three points keep Ecuador on course to reach Qatar. Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, currently on loan at Beerschot, was also in the starting XI.   La ovación más grande hoy fue para Jeremy Sarmiento, harta pelota y tiene apenas 19 años.Que ganas de verlo junto a Estrada y Mena el próximo martes contra Chile.TALENTO PURO. pic.twitter.com/PJHZ2mPL6q — Alfredo Pinoargote Quiroz (@alfredjoe80) November 12, 2021   Ecuador boss Gustavo Alfaro said: “Jeremy made a good impression on me. “We had a chat (the day before the game) and he told me he was very happy and enjoying his time with Ecuador. “I asked him to feel a sense of freedom and I asked him, at the age of 19, to never lose his generosity, his capacity to run, his humility.” Alfaro said he had no doubts over giving Sarmiento his full debut. Despite widespread praise, Sarmiento’s selection was questioned by well known TV journalist Arturo Magallanes. But Renato Paiva, head coach of leading club Independiente del Valle, made headlines as he launched a stinging counter-attack on Magallanes and supported Sarmiento.   Buena victoria ayer, estoy feliz de ser parte de este gran equipo!! Getting closer to our objective.”

#PLStories- Brighton’s Jeremy Sarmiento targets World Cup in Qatar #BHAFC #WC2022

Jeremy Sarmiento has set his sights on Qatar – after hitting the right note on and off the pitch with Ecuador. The Albion prospect, who has yet to appear in the Premier League, made his full international debut as a sub in a World Cup qualifier versus Bolivia. He went on just after the hour as Ecuador, inspired by Moises Caicedo, won 3-0 in Guayaquil. Ecuador were already three up and cruising by the time Sarmiento entered the action. The 19-year-old has been capped at youth level by England and was close to an under-15 appearance for Ecuador. But he said: “I have always wanted to play for the Ecuador national team and this has been going on for some years. “I didn’t expect to make my debut today but in the end, it happened.” Ecuador visit Venezuela this weekend and then move on to Colombia. They remain well-placed in the arduous and fiercely competitive CONMEBOL qualifying competition for next year’s World Cup. Sarmiento said: “If we continue like this, we will go to the World Cup.” Speaking in Spanish, he called on the team to “give it some neque” in the coming games, using a colloquial word popular in South America, particularly Ecuador. It essentially means a combination of strength, courage and desire. Sarmiento’s choice of vocabulary appears to have delighted many fans who questioned the Madrid-born, London-raised teen’s allegiance to their nation. Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro sees Sarmiento as a bright prospect. He said: “We had a comfortable night because the team was solid defensively. “Jeremy Sarmiento is adjusting to this reality of the national team. “It was a nice possibility to be able to play him. He has enormous growth potential.” Caicedo, the Albion midfielder on loan at Beerschot, played the first 78 minutes. WHAT NEWCASTLE BUYOUT MEANS FOR BRIGHTON AND PREMIER LEAGUE He looked sharp as he set up the team’s second goal, for Enner Valencia, with a brilliant piece of skill and measured pass. It was Valencia’s first international goal for almost two years and made him his nation’s all-time leading scorer with 32.

#PLStories- Brighton sign #JeremySarmiento from Benfica #BHAFC

Albion have signed former England under-17 international Jeremy Sarmiento from Benfica. He arrives on a two-year deal on undisclosed terms, subject to international clearance. The 19-year-old attacking player will join up with Andrew Crofts’ under-23s. Sarmiento came through the ranks with Charlton Athletic before signing for Benfica in 2018. Crofts said: “We are delighted that we are able to bring a player like Jeremy in, who we’ve watched extensively during his time with both Charlton and Benfica. “The pathway we have in place was a big factor in Jeremy choosing us ahead of many suitors, which is of huge credit to the academy and first-team staff. “We look forward to welcoming Jeremy and seeing him in action with the under-23s in the near future.”
