Graham Potter Returns to Management as West Ham United’s New Head Coach Following Lopetegui’s Departure

Potter has agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract to return to management 20 months after he was dismissed by the Blues.

“I am delighted to be here,” Potter said. “It was important to me that I waited until a job came along that I felt was right for me and equally that I was the right fit for the club I am joining.

“That is the feeling I have with West Ham United. My conversations with the chairman and the board have been very positive and constructive.

“We share the same values of hard work and high energy to create the solid foundations that can produce success, and we are on the same wavelength in terms of what is needed in the short-term and then how we want to move the club forward in the medium to long term.”

West Ham currently sit 14th in the Premier League, seven points above the relegation zone and 17 points clear of Saints.

Spaniard Lopetegui paid the price for back-to-back heavy defeats by Liverpool (5-0) and Manchester City (4-1) after beating Ivan Juric’s Southampton on Boxing Day.

The 58 year old was appointed in May to replace David Moyes, who left the club at the end of last season after his contract expired.

Potter will take charge of his first match when West Ham travel to Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Friday.

‘A big relief’ – Russell Martin assesses first Premier League win as Saints boss (against Everton)

Adam Armstrong scored the only goal in the 85th minute of a tense encounter, which saw a swift Beto equaliser ruled out by VAR for offside.

It ended Southampton’s 22-match winless run in the top flight and was the club’s latest winning goal in the Premier League since December 2018.

Three points also lifted Saints off the bottom of the league table with Wolves playing in the evening kick-off and handed Martin a timely boost.

“It was a big relief, happiness, gratitude and pride in the players and the staff and the supporters and the owners and the board,” said Martin.

“We’ve been in a really tough period so for the guys to stick with… you guys spend a bit of time at the training ground and stuff and it’s never felt any different.

“The cloud of not having a win has hung over things but the way they work, the way they train and the way they interact with each other, they’re amazing.

“They’re an amazing group to work with. I love them and I love being here so I want to drag it out for as long as I can. A win will certainly help that.”

“We’ve been on the wrong end of a few tight ones,” added Martin, assessing the VAR decision which ultimately helped Saints to the win.

“It’s a big bit of learning for us as well because it was so tight and we’d just scored and everyone’s caught up in the emotion.

“That could have completely taken this out and it would have been horrific feelings. It wasn’t a nice feeling for us for a couple of minutes it was happening.

“Then after that, they threw everything at us and they’re a good team. Strong team, organised and make it so difficult for you.

“I think some of the football we played today was outstanding. A few sticky moments when they took the ball off us because they were well-drilled.

“We recovered well from them and everyone stuck at it and we scored a goal from brilliant courage and composure in our own box.

“Defending the set play, we head it down rather than clear it and play a one-two together for Matty Fernandes to drive up. I’m really proud of the players.”

“The players have been criticised so much sometimes for stuff they’re trying that hasn’t quite come off so I hope they get some credit when it does go right.”

Southampton manager Russell Martin highlights how Everton has been on good run (ahead of their premier league game)

Southampton welcome Sean Dyche’s side to St Mary’s on Saturday as they continue to search for their first win of the campaign.

Everton sit eight points ahead of Saints having mounted a five-game unbeaten run, beating Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town.

Their unbeaten run started following their Carabao Cup defeat to Southampton at Goodison Park.

Martin believes the Toffees are a prime example of how quickly teams can turn this around in the Premier League.

“Their 11 that start will be different for a start,” he explained. “They’ve also gone five games unbeaten, so they’re in a really good place.

Saints beat Everton on penalties in the Carabao Cup (Image: PA) “They’ve found a bit of rhythm with a manager who’s got so much experience. They are a team that’s so well organised and really good at what they do.

“They carry big threats and have really top players in the Premier League. I think it’s going to be difficult. I think it’s a completely different game, a completely different context.

“The challenge for us, in the same way as it was last week at Man City, is to try and be the team that we want to be and play the game that we want to play.”

He continued: “They definitely won’t make it easy to do that. It’s going to require all of the same stuff that we brought onto the pitch last weekend.

“I’m really confident, I’m really excited about the game. I think the players are in a really good place, and I’m really confident they can do that.

“There’s such a long way to go, two results can change things dramatically. Everton have been on a good run, which has changed things dramatically for them.

“I’m confident that we’re capable of doing the same, and we have to start that somewhere, so I hope that is tomorrow.”

Southampton have won just one point in the league so far (Image: Stuart Martin)Asked how important Southampton’s games against Everton and Wolves are for his future as boss, Martin said: “That curve has been there every game

“I think everyone reported the Leicester game, or the lazy journalist did, they said it was do or die and I’d get sacked if we lost that.

“I saw one on Saturday about Man City, if we lost there, I’d get sacked that night. The owners have been brilliant.

“When I speak to Henrik, Dragan, Rasmus, Phil, Mark and the gang here, everyone’s been so supportive.

“I think they understand how close we are, how close we have been. I think there’s a level of respect between us all that we can be really honest.”

‘They were really, really good’ – Guardiola claims he loved Southampton way of play under Russell Martin (despite City 1 – 0 win)

Saints suffered a 1-0 defeat at Man City thanks to Earling Haaland’s early goal and were denied an equaliser by the crossbar on the stroke of half-time.

Guardiola explained that Southampton’s gameplan and philosophy made it difficult for his players to win the ball back.

Asked if he will learn from Martin, despite the retired defender being less experienced as a coach, Guardiola insisted: “Absolutely.

“I’m a big believer in the process of build-up. I prefer my players get the ball to the feet, not to the teeth.

“When this happens, it’s because they make an incredible process. We were not sloppy, we were not slack, and we were struggling to win the ball because they were really, really good.

“First of all, I’m a spectator, I want to see the opponent doing the things that I like to do with my team, and they’re doing really well, and we struggled.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola heaped praise on Southampton and Russell Martin (Image: Martin Rickett/PA) “I just make a compliment, and I’m pretty sure I will learn. Some movement they have done, the reason why they do it, it’s not difficult.

“They make a movement, create a space to lead to the striker, and they put the forward players on the outside, to bring you there, and it’s not easy.

“The last two games against Wolves and Southampton proved that right now at the bottom of the league, look how difficult it was.

“I think when people say, in the Premier League, every team can beat everyone, yeah, that is the truth.

“I don’t have any complaints about my team, because when the opponent is good, you have to accept it.”

He continued: “The people judge results, not judge intentions or what they want to do. The same guys were giving him (Martin) incredible compliments because he was promoted from the Championship.

“He’s the same guy with the same principles. He’s young and I’m pretty sure he will improve. As a spectator, I like what they do.

“We ran incredibly today. We don’t like that. But it’s not because we were bad, it was because they were good.”

Pep Guardiola confident Southampton will sooner or later have success ahead of game against them

Martin’s Saints visit Etihad Stadium on Saturday, where the hosts will be looking to make it 52 home matches in a row unbeaten in 90 minutes.

Saints sit second-bottom but Guardiola, whose side are one point off Liverpool at the top, warned his players about complacency.

Martin is under pressure externally with only one boss ever picking up fewer points than his one from their first eight matches in the Premier League.

Guardiola has urged the 38-year-old to stick with his high-possession principles ahead of their first-ever meeting, amid criticism from pundits.

“They will have success, when this happens you always have success sooner or later,” said Guardiola, speaking ahead of the clash.

Russell Martin is still hunting his first Premier League win (Image: PA)

“If you start to change your ideas or your thoughts, I’m not saying just to adjust something like five or four at the back, the players will notice.

“They will know you are not a big believer. Sooner or later, the results are coming. We almost had a bad result at Wolves and look what happened.

“We struggled to win. Southampton have had good moments, I saw games against Brentford and against United, the first hour against Leicester.

“These starts were really, really good. They have good moments and they have courage to play. And they have a keeper like Ramsdale.

“Always after a Champions League game, I prefer to play against teams better in the table because you are focused. The big mistake we can do is watch the table.”

Above Martin’s desk at Staplewood there is a Guardiola quote which reads: “When we win, the game model seems good and is not questioned.

“But bear in mind, we won’t always win. Then doubts will come. That is the moment when we will have to trust the model more than ever because the temptation to move away from it will be very strong.”

Guardiola added: “It is our job to convince the players that we are in a good way and that the reason why we didn’t win is this reason or this reason.

“We will fix it and then come back. It is impossible to convince the players if you try to show them something you don’t believe in yourself.

“Their plan is there and they will try to do it. It is hard to adapt to the Premier League in the beginning but I have a lot of respect for the teams who come out of the Championship.

“We complain about the amount of games in the Premier League and the Championship is even worse and if they come up, they are good.

“I have seen their games and (Southampton) always have moments. They are brave with the ball, without the ball I don’t know what will happen.

“We will have to see if they defend deeper or not. If you make a good process, then they have to defend deep. How long will they stay there, I don’t know.”

Guardiola confirmed City are likely to be without injured Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku for the meeting with Saints.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna on wait for a win, nervous mistakes and ‘doubling down’ on principles

On last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat to Everton…

“I think it’s fair to say that was our most disappointing result and performance of the season. Up until two games ago, after the Aston Villa game (2-2 home draw), I think everyone inside and outside the club could see the momentum in the performances with four games unbeaten and lots of progression. Now we’ve had two games either side of an international break that haven’t gone our way (losing 4-1 at West Ham previously). Poor moments have cost us and we haven’t managed to muster up a response to get some something from the games.

“Everyone was disappointed after Saturday. When you have a home record like ours it’s extra disappointing. But we know these set-backs are going to come over the course of a the season.

“I don’t think it’s always a linear progression as you’re trying to develop. We’ve taken some good steps forwards and then probably a couple of steps back in the last couple of games. The response has been good this week. The next game is always an opportunity.”

On the wait for a Premier League win…

“We’ve got a result in half our games and if we’d won just one of them then the narrative would be different. There’s no doubt, however, that as the games go on, getting the first win will be a big boost. I think that’s clear to see and to feel.

“It’s not worth making it any bigger than it is. It’s about following the process and giving everything to the next performance and trusting that the good things will come.

“We had a spell last season in the Championship where we had one win in nine games, then we had nine wins in 10 games immediately after. If you asked me what we changed drastically in that period it was probably not a lot. It’s very fine margins in football. A couple of times the margins go your way, you get players back from injury, some players come into the team and do well and things can change.

“In League One we had a period where we had maybe one win in nine games, then we won 13 out of 14 and smashed almost every EFL record in terms of that run. What did we do differently? Not a whole lot.

“I’m not saying we’re on the cusp of that sort of run in the Premier League, but I believe you have to focus on trying to do the right things, in training and games, and if you do that over a long enough period of time then things will turn in your favour.”

On whether the team are playing with nerves…

“Let me use Cameron Burgess as an example, who I think had a very good game last week. Cameron Burgess is landing back from Japan on Thursday morning (following international duty with Australia), he gets one day of preparation to face (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin ahead of fulfilling his dream of becoming a Premier League player after a journey that’s taken him from the National League. If he doesn’t have some nerves prior to that then he’s probably some version of a psychopath!

“Pretty much every game we’ve had a player making their Premier League debut. We’ve got an awful lot of players who have climbed a long way to get to this point in their career. So if there is not some nerves and anxiety, then they are probably not competitive sports people.

“Would those nerves be different if we were sitting fifth in the table and pushing for the Champions League? Maybe. But we had a lot of nerves in the team when we were pushing for promotion from League One. It was the same in the Championship last season.

“For sure you can look at a couple of moments in the Everton game and say there were a few mistakes that possibly looked like nervous mistakes, but they’re human beings and the step that so many of them are taking means there was always going to be that.

“Handling nerves is something that you have to deal with individually and as a group and use in a positive manner. It’s up to us to make sure support them the best way possible.”

On the need to ‘trust the process’…

“As I said, there have been periods in the past where we haven’t won and we’ve come out of those periods by sticking to our day-to-day processes.

“Going into the season we knew, as a newly-promoted team, it was going to feel very different and we weren’t going to win so many games.

“The team that finishes 17th in the Premier League usually gets between eight and nine wins over the course of a 38-game season. So that’s one win a month, if you want to do some very loose math. It might mean you don’t win for three months, but then win three games in a row and still be on course. Everton last year finished with an almost mid-table points total, but they didn’t win for 11 games at one stage. That’s a team that has over 2,000 Premier League appearances amongst them.

“We knew there would be periods where we didn’t win for a stretch. You pre-frame these things, you speak about it as a group and you try and lay down how you’re going to be in those moments. Then you set your process right and you deal with it. Our way of dealing with it is doubling down on how well we train, how hard we train, how we prepare, how we stick together as a group and how we just focus on the next game. That’s what’s brought us success as a group before and that’s what I think will bring us success this year.”

On whether he needs to change system/tactics…

“Look, the reality is, as a newly-promoted team, we’re going to lose a lot more games than we have previously. And when you lose games there’s always going to be another opinion on how you could do things. That’s the life of a manager. Your theory gets tested every week and there are a thousand other theories that never get tested, so they’ll never be wrong!

“We’re trying to find the right balance between sticking to our principles and adapting to be as competitive as we have been.

“To say we’re doing exactly the same this season as we did last season would be untrue, if you go into the details. To say we did exactly the same last year as we did in League One the year before would be completely untrue. People probably see some of the same personnel and loose framework and think everything’s the same, but we have always adjusted and adapted with little details game-by-game to give us the best chance to be competitive. We continue to do that every week.

“A lot of those details aren’t always going to be apparent. We’re probably not going to go from A to Z week-by-week in terms of looking like a drastically different football team, but within that there are so many details we go into that we try and adjust to give ourselves the best chance. That’s even more important in a period where we’re challenged by injuries and availability.”

On giving cheap goals away…

“The two goals we conceded against Everton have nothing to do with system, shape, tactics, philosophy. If you make two big mistakes in your penalty area – one from a set-piece, one from open play – and give one of the wiliest teams in the Premier League those goals then, while it’s not impossible to get something from the game, it’s going to be very, very difficult.

“The West Ham game was pretty similar if you look at the goals we conceded. At the moment there have been too many of them. When you have goals like than then a Premier League game is always going to be really difficult. It’s up for us to work through that, identify if there’s any trends and find some solutions. But sometimes it’s just a case of humans making errors when playing sport at a really high level.

“We know that the course of the last two games could have been really different. In the West Ham game we had big chances at 1-1 that could have changed the complexion. We know there were big moments in the Everton game to take the lead and to equalise with the penalty (that wasn’t given). But we give away poor goals.

“It’s two games after a pretty good run when everyone was positive about the progression. It’s two games where, if we’re being honest, we’ve conceded some goals that make it very, very difficult to get anything from a Premier League football match.

“We know underneath that there’s been some good things. They’re never going to be over highlighted when the game doesn’t go your way, and rightly so.

“We know we’re doing some things well. There have been times where we’ve looked like we can be a really effective side. You can look at the chance we created for Jack Clarke (against Everton early on) and our ability to carve a really good defensive system open. We’ve had moments of control in each game and look like we can work the opposition really hard. We’ve had moments where we’ve pressed really aggressively and got lots of high regains. And we’ve had moment where we’ve defended with lots of bodies back behind the ball and looked like we can be resolute defensively. But of course there have been too many moments that have gone in the other direction. It’s about trying to be more consistent.

“It’s hard to keep at your very, very best when you have things going against you, but that’s what we have to do because it’s not the last mistake we’re going to make this season.

“You get set-backs in football, you get set-backs in life, but it’s about how you get back up again.”

Southampton manager Russell Martin admits problems after set piece specialist coach had left 4 months back

Saints hired specialist coach Andreas Georgson at the start of last season but did not replace him directly after he departed four months into the role.

They conceded the fewest goals (seven) from set-pieces in the Championship last campaign while also ranking high on many other key metrics.

Yet no team has conceded more from dead balls than their seven in the Premier League – including Saturday’s 98th-minute Leicester City winner.

Saints have now called on the expertise of a set-piece consultant, the Daily Echo understands, and had been waiting until recent weeks for his work permit.

However, Martin has urged his staff to continue improving their records and pointed to individual errors that are currently proving costly.

“We have fewer attacking set pieces now but we’ve been good in the last few games. We’ve hit the woodwork and should score a few more goals,” said Martin.

Understand Saints have brought someone into a set-piece consultant-style staff role in recent weeks to address that. No detail on who but club had to wait on them gaining work permit. More from Russell Martin on set-pieces in general tonight but not a radical overhaul.#SaintsFC

“Defending set plays – we can go to Arsenal against the best team and defend amazingly well, for a lot of set plays because we’re under pressure.

“It’s one on Saturday and one against Ipswich that kills us. There were a few second-phase problems early on in the season but we have sorted that out.

“The ones against Ipswich and Leicester we have to look at because it’s people that come on to the pitch that don’t quite do the right job.

“Maybe tension takes over and they think they’re going to help the team doing something else but you just need to stick to the detail at that point.

“We have a look at everything including that in the same way we do with every area of the game so it’s frustrating and it’s annoying that it’s hurt us again.

“We will have to take responsibility for that but we have an analyst defensively and an attacking analyst as well and then a consultant that helps out.

“Nothing’s really changed in terms of the process of it and I’d say we do more work on it now than we ever have done.

“I think the two moments we’re talking about have really hurt us are down to game management and not detail of the set piece or a lack of work.”

Saints saw fit to hire former Arsenal and Brentford coach Georgson in August 2023 but the Swede departed by Christmas for a management job.

Assistants Matt Gill and Colin Calderwood oversaw set-pieces for the rest of the Championship season as Saints were best in class in the division.

Meanwhile, Sport Republic co-founder Rasmus Ankersen had been an early pioneer in detailed set-piece analysis with FC Midtjylland and Brentford.

Amid new struggles, Martin has not ruled out bringing in a new specialist set-piece coach but played down the suggestion it was essential.

“I think we’re always open to it but it needs to be the right person,” said Martin.

“It needs to be someone good enough to come in and convince the players. I’m really happy with the coaches we have to deliver it.

“Andreas left not late into the season and it’s the same people that were doing it last season. We did it well so we have to just keep working to try and improve.”

McKenna reveals he twice came close to signing Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers

Versatile forward Morgan Rogers, 22, joined Villa in a deal worth up to £15m, from Middlesbrough, back on January transfer deadline day and has since gone on to establish himself as a key man in Unai Emery’s attack.

The former England U21 international previously spent four years at Manchester City, during which time he had loan spells at Lincoln (League One), Bournemouth and Blackpool (both in the Championship.

“Morgan Rogers is a player that we know well,” said McKenna. “We were certainly there or thereabouts to bringing him here a couple of times earlier in his career when he was on his loan moves.

“He’s a player that I’ve known for a good number of years. We played against him nine months ago when he was at Middlesbrough, now Aston Villa have improved him and the impact he’s having at Premier League level – though hopefully not this weekend – is great to see.”

Ipswich saw Villa beat them to the signing of Hull winger Jaden Philogene this summer, though the latter is currently injured.

“They’ve recruited really well,” said McKenna. “They’ve invested a lot and invested wisely. The manager has shown he consistently improves and gets the best out of what he’s got. That’s why they’re doing so well.”

Villa finished fourth in the Premier League last season to qualify for the Champions League. They have won six of their opening seven games across all competitions at the start of 2024/25.

Asked how much of a say he had in the shock Sinisterra and Anthony swap deal, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It is a situation that happened on the last day of the window.

“The club thought that we could be stronger adding a player like Luis Sinisterra.

“He was on Saturday (at Brentford) watching the game. Now he is going with the national team, so we will not have him for the next 10 to 12 days.

“But it is another player we have who can make the difference, starting from wide. It is a good addition for us.”

Quizzed on if he supported the idea of Anthony going to Leeds, Iraola added: “It is a decision he had to make.

“I tried to help him as much as I could, because Jaidon, I love him as a person and as a player.

“Of the four games he has been with me, he has started three. He was very good in pre-season.

“But he had to take the decision, because we have a lot of options there out wide.

“It is the decision he finally took and I hope the best, because he deserves it.

“I know he is going to play very well there in Leeds and I hope he returns next season even better as a player.”

Anthony was with Cherries’ squad in the team hotel, getting ready to face Brentford in the Premier League the following day, before his sudden departure.

Detailing his conversations with the 23-year-old, Iraola said: “I tried to be as honest as I could, because he deserves it.

“I had no problem if he was to stay here, no problem at all.

“And you can see because he has played with me, he has started. He is a reliable player.

“You tell him to do this, he will do it or he will try to do it. He will make mistakes, like everyone else, but he is a very reliable player.

“He had to take the decision knowing the players he will be fighting for in his position.

“The option he had also I think was really good, to a very good team.

“He decided to take that route. It’s a loan, so I hope he comes back with us, for sure he will, like a better player.

“As a person, he is a top, top guy. I think he deserved all the honesty, as much as I could.

“I tried to help him, but he was the one with the final decision.”

“(Mahmoud) Dahoud last year did not play so many games but he is a top, top, top player.

“Maybe he needs much time to come inside in idea and condition but he is a top player for us, for our level.

“Joao Pedro is a potential crack. (Simon) Adingra is one attacker, one winger more and he will be very important for us because we will play more or less 60 games and we need a stronger squad.

“Igor is a good player. Like Dahoud he needs much time because his position is crucial for us.

“The centre-back can touch 100 balls per game.

“But we have not finished yet the transfer market.

“I think we are building a very, very good team”

“We have to be happy, to be proud, because we have the possibility to play in the Europa League and to fight another year in the Premier League.

#PLStories- Andoni Iraola wants AFC Bournemouth to sign more midfielders #AFCB

The departure of Jefferson Lerma on a free transfer to Crystal Palace, combined with the sale of Ben Pearson to Stoke City this transfer window has seen Cherries’ numbers in the middle of the park dwindle.

Gavin Kilkenny has returned to the first team following a loan spell at Charlton, but the youngster does not seem central to the Basque boss’ plans, whilst Joe Rothwell is still not fully fit after an injury at the end of last term.

With Philip Billing injured for the visit of Atalanta, Iraola resorted to playing Ryan Christie beside Lewis Cook as his midfield pairing, the Scot usually deployed behind the striker or on the wing.

Iraola also explained there was further experimentation with David Brooks, the Welsh international operating as the number 10 behind Dominic Solanke.

Iraola told the Daily Echo: “Right now, especially with Philip being out today and Joe (Rothwell) also being in this recuperation process, we lacked players inside.

“But we tried Ryan as a number eight. We tried also Brooksie playing inside.

Probably they are not their better positions, but right now I think they can help us there in some moments. And is the time to make this provocation.

Expanding further, Iraola told BBC Radio Solent: “I think Ryan I prefer him as a number ten.

“I think he’s more suited for this position or even from the side coming inside.

“But right now with the players we have, he can help us.

“He played some minutes also against Maccabi there and I think he’s tactically smart, so he can be valuable anywhere.”

Asked what type of midfielder he would like to see signed, the former Athletic Club man continued: “I think we need probably more than one player there.

“I think we need different styles, different types of player that can help us in these three positions we use in the midfield.

“But right now we have to wait at the end, the club is trying to sign the players.

“Like all the teams, but we have to wait for the right situation.

“We all think that it’s better to wait a little bit more, even if you don’t train (with the new players), but at the end you make the right decision with the correct player, the player that suits your style and think is going to be better for the club.”

Cherries host FC Lorient next weekend, before starting their Premier League campaign with the visit of West Ham on Saturday, August 12.

#PLStories- Hatters boss Rob Edwards insists Nakamba signing ‘speaks volumes’ about club’s Premier League ambitions #LUTONTOWNFC

Luton boss Rob Edwards believes the permanent signing of Marvelous Nakamba ‘speaks volumes’ for the ambitions of the Hatters this season. The acquisition of the 29-year-old, on a three deal, something the club don’t usually publicise, represents a fantastic piece of business from the Town board.Although the Zimbabwean international cost Aston Villa £11m in 2019, and still had 12 months to run on what was a lucrative deal at Villa Park, Luton have been able to persuade him to make Kenilworth Road his home, as they prepare for their first ever season in the Premier League.Discussing his latest addition, Edwards told the club’s official website: “A massive thank you to Gary (Sweet, CEO) and the board, they’ve worked so hard on this, and to Aston Villa for making it happen.“It’s a huge statement for the club going forward.”To bring in a player of his quality on a permanent transfer speaks volumes of where this football club is going, how ambitious we are and where we intend to go.”We want to keep moving forward, it’s really exciting times and Marv is another addition, together with the ones we brought in, that I think are really going to improve us.”Marvelous Nakamba enjoys Luton’s promotion to the Premier League at Wembley – pic: Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesGoing into more detail on just how good the midfielder was during his stint with the Hatters, he added: “We, the supporters, the board, the staff and the players, all fell in love with Marv for what he gave us.”Not just his work ethic, but his humility.”He’s so unassuming; he just slotted in from day one and it felt like he had been at Luton for 10 years.“I think he felt that love. Everyone felt that he enjoyed himself and that it felt like home for him.”That’s why it is special because he felt it was right, he felt comfortable, at home, and now he is.“As a footballer, he was the glue that knitted us together, he allowed everyone to do their jobs.”There were quotes out there last season saying it was like having three of him on the pitch at times, he covered every blade of grass.”
