Last year, during a press conference while managing AS Roma, José Mourinho stirred controversy among Tottenham Hotspur fans by making candid remarks about his connection with the club. This revelation came amidst broader discussions about his feelings towards other clubs he has managed. In another instance, Mourinho discussed fresh emotions regarding Manchester United, as well as his perspective on the Premier League’s competitive landscape.
José Mourinho said “I hope the Tottenham fans don’t get me wrong but the only club in my career where I don’t have still a deep feeling for is Tottenham. Probably because the stadium was empty, Covid time. Probably because Mr. Levy [Spurs chairman Daniel Levy] didn’t let me win a final and win a trophy. But it’s the only one, so after that – Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United – all the clubs I feel a connection. I love every club because I felt the other way around – they also loved me. So with Roma, one day it will be hard but we will be connected forever like I am with all my previous clubs – apart from Mr. Levy’s club.”
During the press conference on Wednesday ahead of the visit from United in the Europa League, Mourinho further shared his sentiments towards another former club.
José Mourinho said”I left with a good feeling to the club, with a good feeling to the fans and I want the best for them. So if things are not going amazingly well for them it’s not something that makes me happy.”
Despite his past sentiments towards Tottenham, Mourinho did not hold back from recognizing the strengths of what is now led by Ange Postecoglou.
José Mourinho said”The Premier League is a different level of quality, intensity, pace, tactical culture – it’s a different level of everything. Tomorrow, I think we are going to play against one of the two strongest teams.”
Despite the mixed feelings from Mourinho, his recent praises of Tottenham’s current standing in the Premier League could resonate positively with Spurs supporters. Ange Postecoglou, the current Tottenham manager, is well aware of the expectations to finally secure a trophy for a club that has long awaited return to glory. The Europa League or the FA Cup presents a promising opportunity, especially after their draw with Manchester City in the Carabao Cup. It’s now up to Spurs to leverage their favored status in the Europa League to potentially vindicate Mourinho’s recent comments.
