David Moyes Addresses Dominic Calvert-Lewins Contract Situation Amid Fitness Concerns

David Moyes

Everton manager David Moyes has addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation, as the striker’s current deal is set to expire this summer. Despite reports suggesting otherwise, Moyes clarified that no offer has been made to Calvert-Lewin during his tenure at the club. The manager emphasized that the final decision on the player’s future will rest with him, contingent upon Calvert-Lewin proving his fitness and robustness.

David Moyes said: “He’s obviously not fit. He’s not fit as far as he’s not match fit. It’s huge training with the team and he’s probably only had three days training with us in total, so that would be really unfair to judge him, so we wouldn’t do that. It’s not me who’s always judging him though. Evertonians are judging him. They’ll have their own thoughts about how he’s done over the years. I’ll be the one who makes the final decision, but Dom is the one who has to show us he can be robust, he can be fit to play. Undoubtedly, he’s got qualities that other strikers don’t have and he has to show us all when he has those opportunities, he’s going to take it.”

Moyes further elaborated on the challenges Calvert-Lewin faces in proving himself in the remaining weeks of the campaign, acknowledging the difficulty of the task at hand.

David Moyes said: “The first game for me, he got me a goal against Tottenham, it probably made him feel a lot better and I do believe if he’d been around the team he’d have got a few more goals. It’s a nearly impossible question isn’t it? I’ll tell you what, he’s an incredibly conscientious boy from what I’ve seen about his body and how he keeps himself fit. He’s worked privately in Germany for the last month or so, to keep himself in the right shape.”

Calvert-Lewin, who has scored three times in 22 appearances this season, faces a crucial period as he aims to demonstrate his value to the team. With Everton set to bid farewell to Goodison Park and move to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, the club is at a pivotal moment in its history. Moyes’ comments highlight the importance of Calvert-Lewin’s fitness in securing his future with the club, as well as the role of the Everton faithful in shaping perceptions of the striker’s contributions over the years.
