#PLStories- Manchester United sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Watford thrashing #MUFC

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer has been sacked as Manchester United manager. United, who made the decision in the wake of United’s 4-1 defeat at Watford, have put Michael Carrick in temporary charge while the club look to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season. A statement said: “Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager. Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. “While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success. “Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.” Carrick’s first assignment after stepping up from his role as assistant manager is a vital Champions League clash away to Villarreal coming up on Tuesday. The decision comes at the end of a torrid run of results for United under Solskjaer, the club great who himself took over on an interim basis back in December 2018 after the sacking of Jose Mourinho. He rode out a chastening 5-0 home loss to Liverpool and appeared to be back in calmer waters after a 3-0 win at Tottenham, but a comprehensive derby loss to Manchester City meant that the Watford game was essentially a must-win. The writing was on the wall for Solskjaer when Watford flew into a 2-0 lead through Josh King and Ismaila Sarr. Substitute Donny van de Beek pulled one back but United’s under-fire captain Harry Maguire was sent off after 69 minutes and late goals from Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis piled on the misery. The struggles were not widely expected back when Solskjaer became the first United manager to win his first six league games, beating a record held by Sir Matt Busby, and was handed the permanent role in March 2019. United finished second behind Manchester City last season but currently lie seventh, six points off West Ham in fourth and 12 behind leaders Chelsea. Solskjaer insisted he could still turn things around in the wake of another chastening afternoon at Vicarage Road, but it appears the club disagree. United keeper David De Gea gave a damning verdict on United’s display at Watford, telling the BBC: “We don’t know what to do with the ball. We don’t know how to defend properly. “It was embarrassing, the way we played. The first half was very poor – it’s not acceptable for this club and the level of players that we have. “It’s another nightmare. There’s been some difficulties but I don’t really know what to say.”
James Ward Prowse

#PLStories – James Ward-Prowse and Tino Livramento withdraw from England national teams #SAINTSFC

SAINTS skipper James Ward-Prowse has withdrawn from the England senior squad while Tino Livramento will also play no part in the under-21s upcoming games. The club have confirmed both have been withdrawn from Three Lions camps for differing reasons. Ward-Prowse will miss Gareth Southgate & co’s final two World Cup qualifying matches against Albania and San Marino due to illness. Young full-back Livramento has been withdrawn from his respective squad due to an injury. Both players took part and played a full 90 minutes against Aston Villa, during the 1-0 televised win on Friday evening, and left the pitch unscathed. But the club’s statement reads: “Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse has been withdrawn from the latest England squad due to illness, while Tino Livramento has also been withdrawn from the England Under-21s squad due to injury.” Livramento had been called up to both Lee Carsley's last two under-21 squads, while Ward-Prowse was looking to capitalise on his second successive call-up after missing the European Championships and September games. The Saints captain scored the second England goal of his international career with the rebound of a penalty during victory in Andorra last time out. Nathan Redmond was ruled out of the Premier League contest versus Aston Villa due to a positive Covid-19 test, only revealed by the club under an hour to kick-off, but it is unknown if Ward-Prowse's illness concern is related.  The 27-year-old midfielder had been battling through stomach concerns in the early stages of this season.

#PLStories- Watford investigate alleged homophobic chanting at Southampton game #WATFORDFC

WATFORD are investigating an allegation of homophobic chanting at their match against Saints on Saturday. The incident is said to have occurred during the Hornets’ 1-0 Premier League defeat at Vicarage Road. Watford said in a statement: “We are aware of an incident of homophobic chanting at Saturday’s match. “We have spoken to the supporter who reported this and are working with them to identify the individuals responsible. “We reiterate our zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and how to report it.” Saints were victorious courtesy of a stunning strike from Che Adams on the afternoon. The result lifts Saints to 14th in the Premier League, with 11 points from the opening 10 games of the campaign.

#PLStories- Club Statement from Newcastle after Steve Bruce leaves the club #NUFC

STEVE Bruce has left his position as Newcastle head coach by mutual consent, the Premier League club have announced. His departure comes 13 days after the club’s takeover by a Saudi-led consortium. A club statement said: “Newcastle United can confirm that Steve Bruce has left his position as head coach by mutual consent. “He leaves the Magpies after more than two years in charge, having steered the club to 13th and 12th-place finishes in the Premier League and reaching the quarter-final stage in both the Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his tenure. “Newcastle United would like to place on record its gratitude to Steve for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.” Bruce’s assistant Graeme Jones will take charge of the team for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace with the Magpies still awaiting their first Premier League win of the season and sitting just one place off the foot of the table. The statement continued: “Graeme Jones will lead the team on an interim basis, starting with Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, and will be supported by the coaching team of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith. “The process of recruiting a new head coach is under way and an appointment will be announced in due course. The club will not be making further comment at this time.”

#PLStories- NFL star Malcolm Jenkins invests in Premier League Burnley #BURNLEYFC

NFL star Malcolm Jenkins is part of the ALK Capital investment group that took over Burnley last year, the club has revealed. Jenkins, a two-time Super Bowl winner, visited Turf Moor for the first time over the weekend. The 33-year-old, who currently plays for the New Orleans Saints, has a minority stake in the club. “I’m excited to enter this new relationship, as Burnley FC is known for its tenacity, work ethic, good sportsmanship and efficient operational infrastructure. “It’s a great fit for me personally and my company to invest in the growth of the sport alongside a historic organization that aligns with our company values,” he told the club’s website. “I think the club’s doing a great job with some of the updates around the stadium and to see the vision of where they want to go in creating a venue that’s not only a great place to come and watch a game is really exciting.” Jenkins was given a tour of Turf Moor alongside chairman Alan Pace before watching the Clarets’ 2-0 defeat at Manchester City over the weekend. “It was great to welcome Malcolm and his team to Turf Moor at the weekend and give them their first live taste of Premier League action,” added Pace. “Malcolm has a wealth of high-level experience, not only as an elite sportsman, but through his successful business and philanthropic enterprises. “We’re thrilled to have him as part of our investment group and look forward to him helping our efforts to develop the club both on and off the pitch.”
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Southampton CEO Martin Semmens admits pressure on Ralph Hasenhuttl to give results #SAINTSFC

SAINTS’ CEO Martin Semmens was quizzed if the pressure is now on Ralph Hasenhuttl to perform this season given that he got what he wanted in the transfer window, and responded: "Interesting question.” The CEO and manager have both identified that the primary aim for the summer window just gone was to add depth to the squad, after injuries and absences caused a sharp decline in what was a table-topping Saints side. So much so, that only five out of 22 games were won this side of 2021. In particular, Hasenhuttl wanted two players in every position in order to promote competition, as well as just simply having enough bodies available when things go wrong that you don’t have to prematurely promote B team teenagers to fill a squad. Read more Barring injuries, he’s got that. Will Smallbone will add to Ibrahima Diallo in central midfield reserves while left-back Thierry Small will join the first team at some point this year. Elsewhere, they’ve already got and exhibited it (albeit central-defence will be light in Stephens’ absence). Saints are a man light in centre-back after Jack Stephens' injury at Man City (Pic: PA) So if Hasenhuttl is excused for any prior shortcomings due to not having a squad deep enough to deal with the crises that Premier League football brings, now that he has got it does that put the pressure on him? “Interesting question,” Semmens said, speaking to the Total Saints Podcast, "yes, it is always on him.t from FA Cup run "He would say that ultimately, everything sits with him. The responsibility from how we perform on match day is with him and he is the one in front of the media and standing there on the touchline taking responsibility. So whether we give him what he wants or whether we don't, he still feels that pressure. "We talk about strengthening with two players for every position, not because we are hungry to spend money or to have more players, but it is just the right way to run a professional team. "I think we have that and we are already seeing the benefits of that. The real trigger for me was away at Newport County, when we were 7-0 up and you were still seeing players like Kyle Walker-Peters sprinting back after losing the ball in the 89th minute. Seeing that commitment is so important to what we are trying to do here and that comes from competition for places and knowing that if you are not up to your best, you are not going to play. Kyle Walker-Peters has lost his right-back slot to Tino Livramento (Pic: Stuart Martin) "I think the players have bought into that model, that it can't just be ten or nine of us doing the job and one player scoring the goals, it has got to be all 26 of us. "That responsibility is the key trigger and if Ralph gets that, he will always get results for us. "He expects a lot from his players, he expects them to work hard and run and I think as everyone knows, he operates a system where eleven players have to function at the same time. If you keep taking quality players out of that who are injured and people coming in aren't yet ready, or are too young, or haven't spent enough time with the team, then the system breaks down and I think that's what happened at the end of last year. "I think we have fixed that problem and our way will always be to buy and develop talent, and we are certainly very happy with every player we have brought in. Armando Broja's loan from Chelsea offers striking depth (Pic: Stuart Martin) He continued: "I've been here a while now and every weekend, whether it be fans or with family or staff, we go 'oh, this is a big one.' "Every game is a big one in the Premier League and it is getting increasingly difficult. Even yesterday, with the Newcastle announcement, every team has huge finances and amazing, world-class players and facilities. "So every game is incredibly difficult now, but yes, our season will not be defined by not beating Man City or Liverpool once, it will be defined by making sure we beat the teams around us in that group. "So yes," he added. "I think the next five to eight games will be very pivotal to see where we end up halfway through."
Caleb Watts

#PLStories- Southampton youngster Caleb Watts signs contract to extend stay #SAINTSFC

SAINTS youngster Caleb Watts has signed a new contract to remain with the club until 2023. The 19-year-old’s current deal was expiring at the end of this season and he has put pen to paper to commit a further year, after making his Premier League debut during the last campaign. Watts has been a regular for the B team this season, scoring a superb volley against Arsenal in the Premier League Cup after returning from a summer with Australia’s Olyroos side at the Olympics. He joined Saints from QPR back in 2018, and now looks to remain settled and build on his four on-pitch senior experiences with the club. After signing his deal, Watts told the club website: “I’m really pleased to get the deal signed and can’t wait for the next stage of my career now. “The club has a great track record of developing players and obviously I can benefit from that. So hopefully I can get into the matchday squads again and continue that tradition. “It was exciting to get into the matchday squads and play within two or three months. It’s a lot of motivation to show the manager you’re good enough, you just have to show it consistently. “I just want to pick up as much senior experience as possible, try and get into the manager’s plans and see what happens.” Watts is considered to be one of the top prospects within the academy system at the moment, and is highly fancied for a future with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team. Pleased by the boost, academy Director Matt Hale said: “Caleb has been a consistent and strong performer for our B Team this season. “He is someone we think very highly of and through a really robust individual development plan which we have in place for him, we believe can go on to achieve great things with us. He has had some excellent experiences so far in his young career, not least representing his country in the recent Olympics in Tokyo.”

#PLStories- Southampton CEO Martin Semmens hints announcement of contract renewals soon #SAINTSFC

SAINTS’ CEO Martin Semmens tells supporters that “you might see one or two (contract renewals) across the next couple of months,” after last season’s errors. The club lost a lot of their key assets for cheap or less, or were forced into sales due to player contracts running down to their final 12 months. Ryan Bertrand departed for Leicester City on a free deal before Jannik Vestergaard went to the same destination for a cut-price, with only a year left on his contract. An expiring deal also forced Saints’ hand when it came to the bid of striker Danny Ings from Aston Villa, although he actually fetched a fairly reasonable price regardless at £30million. Read more "That is always one of those classic situations where you think, ok we've done that and dealt with it, and then in six months’ time, it comes up again, because they run down. So around this time of year, we do look at it," Semmens told Total Saints Podcast. As it stands, Jan Bednarek, Kyle Walker-Peters, Romain Perraud, and Adam Armstrong are tied down to deals until 2025 with Ward-Prowse and summer signing Tino Livramento is contracted until 2026. James Ward-Prowse signed a new five-year contract in the summer (Pic: Stuart Martin) Saints also have five first-team players on deals until 2024, including Stuart Armstrong, Ibrahima Diallo, Che Adams, Mohammed Salisu and Will Smallbone. However, seven first-teamers are on deals that will expire during the summer of 2023. Fraser Forster is likely to leave the club when his contract expires in 2022 (the end of this season). Jack Stephens and Alex McCarthy’s deals also expire then, but new deals for those two are likely to be announced by the club during this campaign. Injured Jack Stephens is expected to see a new deal announced this campaign (Pic: PA) "There are one or two we are looking at, at the moment, and it is always important to extend,” Semmens added. "But yes, we are certainly in a much better position than we were this time last year and there are fewer pressing issues. You might see one or two across the next couple of months." Nathan Tella, Moi Elyounoussi, Moussa Djenepo, Nathan Redmond, Oriol Romeu and Theo Walcott will all enter the final year of their deals at the start of next season. It’s a boost for the club if Semmens’ suggestions are correct, and some of the key names listed receive renewed terms to end any speculation before it starts, and also protect the value of their assets.

#PLStories- Burnley chosen to host U-21 Championship against the Czech Republic #BURNLEYFC

Turf Moor has been chosen to host England’s European Under-21 Championship qualifier against the Czech Republic. The fixture – the Three Lions’ fourth match in Group B - will take place on Thursday, November 11 (KO 7pm). “We are honoured to be hosting England U21s and bringing international football back to Burnley,” chairman Alan Pace told the club’s website. “As a club with a passion for developing young homegrown talent, I am sure our supporters will welcome the opportunity to see the country’s most exciting players at Turf Moor and get behind England in this important UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifier.” The Clarets were due to host a qualifier between England and Turkey back in March 2020, but the game was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Three Lions – now managed by former Republic of Ireland midfielder Lee Carsley – kick off their qualifying campaign against Kosovo on Tuesday, September 7. Carsley – who took charge following Aidy Boothroyd’s departure - will be aiming to guide the England youngsters to the 2023 finals in Romania. Burnley winger Dwight McNeil – who is no longer eligible for the Under-21 squad – helped the side reach the 2021 finals in Hungary and Slovenia, where they failed to reach the knockout rounds.

#PLStories- Burnley appoint ex-Middlesbrough coach #PaulJenkins as new Academy Director #BURNLEYFC

Burnley have appointed Paul Jenkins as Academy Director for their Category One youth set-up. Jenkins takes up the role following the departure of Jon Pepper, who spent five years at Turf Moor. The 46-year-old has worked in the club as Technical Advisor since ALK Capital’s takeover on New Year’s Eve, and has been heavily involved in the global AiSCOUT talent search. Jenkins spent 23 years working across several roles in the Middlesbrough Academy, including Head Coach of the Under-21 team. He led the Boro youngsters to a double in 2015 – winning the Premier League second division title and North Riding Senior Cup – before being promoted to first-team coach. Jenkins also spent time as assistant manager at Hartlepool United. He will now be tasked with shaping the Clarets’ Academy as part of the club’s long-term strategy, which will include working with international markets. “It is an honour to be taking on the role of Academy Director at Burnley Football Club and I look forward to working with a talented group of young players at a truly world class Academy,” Jenkins told the club’s website. “What I hope to achieve is to create a legacy of good practice for both players and staff, have a positive reputation for giving players an opportunity to maximise their potential which may take them into our first team playing in the Premier League,” he added.
Abdallah Sima

#PLStories- Brighton sign #AbdallahSima who then joins Stoke on loan #BHAFC #SCFC

Brighton have signed striker Abdallah Sima from Slavia Prague for the undisclosed fee. The 20-year-old has signed a four-year-deal with the Seagulls before then heading to Championship side Stoke on a season-long loan. Sima made a name for himself in Prague scoring 16 in 33 appearances with four of those coming in the Europa League. He has also been capped twice for Senegal since making his debut in March. Albion Technical director Dan Ashworth said: “Abdallah joins us after a really good season with Slavia Prague, last season, which saw him excel in their domestic league and the Europa League. “However it is important to remember he has had a very rapid rise, coming from Senegal to France, and he has only played one full season of professional football. It is essential we manage his development in the right way.   “Now he has the opportunity to acclimatise to English football with Stoke, who have started the season well in the Championship. “We’re excited by his potential and David Weir and the loans team will be working closely with him to monitor his progress and ensure he settles here in the UK.” Sima is not the only player on loan at Stoke with defender Leo Ostigard having joined them earlier this month. He is currently on international duty with Senegal and will link up with Michael O'Neill's squad on his return from fixtures against Togo and the Republic of Congo.

"We look forward to seeing him in action soon.” Roberts came through the ranks at Swansea and made more than 150 appearances for the Welsh side. The defender – who also had loan spells with Yeovil Town, Bristol Rovers and Middlesbrough - impressed at Euro 2020 as Wales reached the Round of 16.

#PLStories- Saints apologise to fans after entry and ticket chaos #SAINTSFC

SOUTHAMPTON Football Club has issued an apology to fans after “unacceptable” delays caused some fans to miss kick-off on Sunday. A statement posted on the club’s website said it will start work “immediately” with its access partner to “fully understand the reason for this delayed entry and the solutions to avoid a repetition.” Fans also experienced issues with collecting tickets on Saturday with some queuing for hours outside St Mary’s stadium. Here’s the statement issued by managing director Toby Steele in full: “Further to our communications during the game against Manchester United this afternoon, the club would like to once again apologise for the ticketing and entry issues which many fans experienced. "The club has already started a full investigation into today’s turnstile entry issue, where our initial assessment is that the scanning of tickets took significantly longer per person than we experienced in our recent pre-season matches and our own behind-closed-doors testing. "We will start work immediately with our access partner to fully understand the reasons for this delayed entry and the solutions to avoid a repetition. "Please rest assured that the club views these stadium entry delays as unacceptable. "Regarding the delayed receipt of Season Tickets by certain purchasers, once again please accept our apologies. Although many fans did receive their Season Tickets in time, we accept that the delay or non-arrival caused an unnecessary anxious wait for some fans. "Again, the club does not view this as acceptable and the delays we experienced with our supplier of the physical card is, whilst not something we could ultimately influence, a matter we take responsibility for and must ensure does not happen again. "Today’s ticketing and entry issues were not the start we wanted to the 2021/22 season from a fan experience point of view. We know you have waited 16 months to be at a full stadium of Saints fans getting behind the team and today’s issues will have tainted that experience for a large number of you. "Consequently, we will be giving all general admission ticket holders (both Season Ticket holders and individual match purchasers) a refund for today’s game (a credit will be given to Season Ticket holders’ accounts). "Due to the volume of refunds, please bear with us while we process all transactions. "Once again, on behalf of the club, please accept our apologies if your matchday was affected by today’s ticketing and entry issues. "Thank you for your amazing backing of the team today and continued support at St Mary’s."
Christian Purslow Aston Villa

#PLStories- Aston Villa CEO shares transfer strategy after 3 signings during summer #AVFC

Please shareAston Villa Chief Executive Christian Purslow has seemingly ruled out a move for Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell, claiming that the players required to replace Jack Grealish have already been signed by the Villains. The 25-year-old secured his move to Manchester City on Thursday night, prompting an explanation from Purslow as the Villa faithful mourned the loss of their star man. “Our strategy was to break down Jack’s key attributes,” Purslow told Villa TV, “and to find these qualities in three forward players.” The 57-year-old confirmed these players to include City’s record exit Emi Buendia, who swapped yellow and green for claret and blue early this summer after expressing his desire to leave Carrow Road swiftly following promotion. “In signing Buendia, (£30million winger) Leon Bailey and (England-capped striker) Danny Ings,” Purslow continued, “we believe we have achieved this key objective, and in doing so, have also reduced an over-dependency on one brilliant footballer.” As far as whether Villa will be left depending on one brilliant footballer, City fans might have something to say following their acquisition of Buendia, but it didn’t take them long to work out quite what that meant for their own side. Recent reports had claimed that Cantwell was seen as the ideal replacement for Grealish, and would be the subject of a bid once the England international’s transfer to the English Champions was confirmed. Purslow’s comments seem to suggest, however, that no further replacement was required. An inflated price tag had awaited Dean Smith’s side given the short period of time Stuart Webber would’ve been left to replace his number 14, the Canaries reportedly holding out for up to £40million. City are closing on a deal to sign Greek international Christos Tzolis but do not see the PAOK winger as a like for like alternative to Cantwell, meaning another attacking signing would be desired, if one could be found by the August 31 transfer window deadline. There is, of course, still a possibility that Cantwell could be targeted to add depth to the Villa squad, but reports have centred around the relevance of Grealish’s transfer in the Dereham-born attacker’s future, and the end of a search for the former’s replacement seems highly likely to end interest in the latter. News of a boost to Norwich’s hopes of keeping Cantwell have come as other sources of optimism present themselves. City recently offered a €12million package for Tzolis according to the PinkUn, while American striker Josh Sargent is moving towards a switch from Werder Bremen, where he played with new signing Milot Rashica. Cantwell’s presence will help add some desperately needed depth in forward areas for Daniel Farke’s side, as they look to close the player trading period strongly. Webber has been open about the fact that he’s preparing for an uncharacteristically late flurry of business, stating that: “Sometimes the deals get a little bit better as the window goes on. As frustrating as that is, because the pair of us like it when the squad’s together early and they have that benefit of the pre-season work, sometimes the marketplace dictates that we have to be patient.” Please share
