#PLStories- Newcastle United and Brighton confirm deal for Dan Ashworth #BHAFC #NUFC

DAN ASHWORTH is set to become the new sporting director at Newcastle United. Albion and Newcastle United have reached an agreement for the immediate release of Dan Ashworth from his contractual obligations at the Amex. The terms of this agreement, which is subject to regulatory approval, will remain confidential between the clubs. Albion have thanked Ashworth for his time at the club, a statement said: "We would like to thank Dan for his services and wish him well for the future." Back in February Albion manager Graham Potter admitted he was sorry to see Ashworth leave. However, the Albion boss knows life will go on at the Amex Stadium. He said: “There is a good organisation here, a fantastic chairman, good people that have been here before me and Dan were here and they will be here after. “So it is what it is, we will move forward as a club together and we will take on the challenge of life without Dan as best as we can. “From my perspective, I respect Dan and what he has done for us, I respect the decision that he has made and wish him well. “But I know as a football club this club doesn’t rely on one person, it is a real collective strength that we have and that is what I think will take us through.”

#PLStories- Brighton head Paul Walker gives insights on vision of the club #BHAFC

All members of Albion’s staff received carefully chosen words of thanks and congratulations when the club’s season ended in style. The appreciative message from chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber came very soon after the 3-1 win over West Ham which secured ninth place. Staff were encouraged to appreciate what had happened and to enjoy their summer break. But the message will move on quickly – from “well done” to “follow that”. It has to in an ultra-competitive environment like the Premier League. The Seagulls’ hierarchy revealed an aim three years ago to establish themselves as a top-ten club. But, as was made clear then, that did not mean coming tenth once. Or even ninth. It meant being part of that top ten in all, or most, years on a more consistent basis. They are some way from doing that. One soaring Seagull does not make a summer. But they have made an important breakthrough. So the focus goes back on to the future as Barber himself starts his second decade at the club with a new contract. Technical director Dan Ashworth is off to pastures new, most likely Newcastle and, the hope is on Tyneside, in time for the transfer window. But an otherwise solid, consistent feel about Albion’s structure will only be reinforced by news of Barber’s new deal, which is being described as long-term. He told The Argus: “I strongly believe the best football clubs are built on a good owner, a clear vision, a consistent strategy, high quality people on, off and around the field, and stability. “I’m very fortunate here that we have all of that. “As a consequence, there will always be interest in our staff and players. “We have excellent people in all areas, and every approach we receive for them is a compliment to how the club has progressed, on and off the field.” In his post-season message to staff, Barber described this as “a truly exciting period in our club’s history”. But the message was to now work even harder on and off the pitch to maintain a top-ten placing. Another goal at some stage in the coming years will be to win a trophy. There is also the ongoing effort to establish the women’s team within the top four of the FA WSL. That is another part of Bloom’s vision for the club. Hope Powell’s squad are making progress but have not yet experienced the sort of Eureka moment enjoyed by Graham Potter’s men of late. As the dust settled on that West Ham game and the joyous post-match scenes, Barber told staff: “I know there is nobody prouder than Tony tonight.” Barber’s new deal will make him the third longest-serving executive in a such a role within the Premier League. Susan Whelan has been in a similar role at Leicester City since 2010, when King Power took over the club from Milan Mandaric. BRIGHTON LATEST ON BIDS AND APPROACHES FOR STAR PLAYERS Daniel Levy at Tottenham is way out in front in terms of longevity having been at the helm since 2001. But his role is slightly different as executive chairman rather than CEO. Barber joined Albion in 2012 ahead of a summer also notable for player signings such as those of Bruno, Wayne Bridge and Tomasz Kuszczak as Albion built a side which chased promotion from the Championship.

#PLStories- Liverpool calls on Social Media companies to stop selling Champions league tickets #LFC

Liverpool put pressure on social media companies over Champions League final ticketsLiverpool's victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League semi-final triggered a huge clamour for tickets to the final that takes place in Paris this Saturday, May 28.As ever, Liverpool's official ticket allocation of a meagre 19,618 barely made a dent in the overwhelming demand from fans desperate to cheer their team on from inside the Stade de France. With just a few short days until the final, resale sites have thousands of tickets still available, with the cheapest prices starting at an eye-watering £1,700. Similar numbers have been seen in the previous two Champions League finals the Reds have been in under Jurgen Klopp. In an official statement, Liverpool have today taken aim at social media sites where they claim over 50 accounts are "actively involved in selling, or offering to sell, Champions League final tickets online."Liverpool's official statement reads: "Liverpool Football Club has called on social media companies to close more than 50 social media accounts and groups it believes are actively involved in selling, or offering to sell, Champions League final tickets online."The club has also identified 13 supporters who have offered their tickets for Saturday’s game against Real Madrid for sale online."Those fans have had their tickets cancelled, while their accounts are in the process of being investigated further, with the possibility of added sanctions to follow."The move comes following a recent warning reminding supporters to buy tickets from official sellers only. The club received an allocation of 19,618 tickets for the all-ticket fixture at Stade de France in Paris this weekend."There has unfortunately been an increase in the number of fans being defrauded, online in particular, by fake match ticket offers. If any supporter is offered a ticket online, they should report it to LFC here- and to Action Fraud."Liverpool FC will not stand idly by and watch people try to sell tickets they have been fortunate enough to get access to via the ballot."Read the full story HERE.

#PLStories- Dan Ashworth speaks about decision to leave Brighton #BHAFC

Dan Ashworth looks forward to seeing Albion go from strength to strength after stepping down as technical director. Ashworth has spoken to the club’s website about his decision to resign. He said he leaves with a heavy heart but hopes to see Albion maintain their “outstanding progress” under chairman Tony Bloom. Ashworth’s resignation was announced on Monday. He told brightonandhovealbion.com: “I have been lucky that the club have allowed me two days to have a handover, to speak to all the staff, to say goodbye. “I was allowed a moment with the team yesterday and genuinely said to them that this is probably the best group of players I have had the privilege of working with in terms of culture and togetherness. They’re a joy to work with. “That’s pretty much the same message for the staff as well, the phrase I have used quite regularly is, ‘if you don’t want to do a day’s work in your life, get a job you enjoy’ and that’s been me, that’s been me for the last three-and-a-half years at Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club. “It’s been absolutely brilliant, I have loved every minute of it. I leave with a heavy heart, I genuinely do and I will be watching the progress of the club, hoping the club go from strength-to-strength and continue the outstanding progress the club has made with Tony as chairman. “So a huge thank you to everyone, players, staff, supporters and the city, I have had a wonderful time.” Ashworth said David Weir, now acting technical director, is a strong candidate to take over on a more permanent basis. He added: “What hasn’t changed is Tony Bloom and Paul Barber were here before me and they still are, that hasn’t changed. “Paul Winstanley, from a recruitment point of view, and John Morling, in the academy, were both here before me and are still here. “It’s not about wholesale changes and a load of new staff coming in. Those systems and principals were in place. “I was the first technical director at Brighton so what I hope I have done is sit as the hub in the wheel and just bring it together and I have no doubt David will do the same.”
Brighton & Hove Albion

#PLStories- Brighton confirm about their technical director Dan Ashworth ‘s request to leave #BHAFC #NUFC

DAN ASHWORTH has resigned as Albion's technical director. Ashworth has held talks with Newcastle United in recent weeks. Albion confirmed today he "will take a similar role at another Premier League club." But that will not happen until be has served an "extended" period of gardening leave. Former Everton and Rangers player and Scotland international David Weir becomes the Seagulls' acting technical director with immediate effect. He was recently promoted to assistant technical director. In a club statement, Albion chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber said: “We are sorry to learn of Dan’s decision. He’s been an important part of the club’s senior management team since joining us from The FA, and has made a significant contribution to our club’s progress in the Premier League and Women’s Super League. “On a personal level, I will be sad to see Dan leave as we’d developed a close day to day working relationship. Dan’s been an excellent colleague and has become a good friend as well. I wish Dan and his family well for the future. “However, as is the case with all top quality people in any industry, we are always conscious of the risk of losing key staff to a rival. With that in mind, we always put in place contingencies and succession plans that are designed to minimise the impact on our club. “As such, our assistant technical director, David Weir, will now step up and assume the role of acting technical director. He is someone with an excellent knowledge of the role and of our club’s culture from working side-by-side with Dan. “As previously, we will conduct a search process for the role of technical director, as it is only right to do so. We anticipate a lot of high calibre applicants but we also fully expect and hope David will be a candidate in this process.” Chairman Tony Bloom added: “We are extremely disappointed that Dan will no longer be our technical director. He leaves a significant legacy in place and for that we are greatly appreciative. “Dan’s done an outstanding job and helped build on the progress the club had already made across all of our technical areas. I wish Dan and his family well for the future.”
Will Armitage

#PLStories- Saints’ academy director reveals reasons for confirming youngster Will Armitage at Southampton #SAINTSFC

SAINTS have kept their eye on new signing Will Armitage for some time according to academy director Matt Hale, who revealed that Saints’ player insights department played a big part in identifying the 16-year-old. A programme introduced at the start of the 2020/21 season by director of football operations Matt Crocker, the insights department uses “video and modern technology to support all recruitment decisions at academy and first team level.” Rather than relying on scout reports and opinions, the department aims to use analytics to determine whether signings should be made. The signing of Armitage was perhaps made easier by the fact that the 16-year-old has already appeared in Cheltenham’s first team this campaign, with Hale stating that the insights department had been specifically tasked with finding Saints a centre-half for the future. Hale stated: “Our new player insights department have led on the search for a talented centre back to join our professional development phase.” "We have monitored Will for many months and witnessed his progress at Cheltenham with much interest.” Saints’ academy director also praised the League One club for their assistance in the move, with the deal complicated by the fact Armitage is still only 16. He will join Saints on a scholarship deal, initially linking up with the under-18s before fighting for a place in Saints’ B team. "Cheltenham have been excellent in working with us to make the signing happen and once we were permitted to talk to Will,” continued Hale. “It was evident his maturity and professional character would be an ideal match for our Southampton Football Club culture. "Will has some strong physical characteristics and the ability on the ball to suit our style of play at the Club. It will be great to see him playing in an Academy shirt hopefully this weekend and I look forward to seeing him develop further with us.”
Claudio Ranieri

#PLStories- Watford club provide reasons for sacking Claudio Ranieri #WATFORDFC

WATFORD have sacked boss Claudio Ranieri after just 16 weeks in the hot seat. The well-travelled Italian signed a two-year deal at Vicarage Road in October, replacing Xisco Munoz with the side 15th, having taken seven points from their first seven Premier League games. But Ranieri only managed to double that points tally during his 13 top-flight matches in charge and has been sacked by Watford after 112 days. During his time at Watford, Ranieri presided over a 1-0 defeat to Saints in October, Che Adams scoring the only goal. Saints are due to welcome Watford to St Mary's on March 12. The Hornets languish in 19th place in the Premier League and sit just two points above bottom-placed Burnley, who have two games in hand on the Hertfordshire side. The relegation rivals will go toe-to-toe in a rearranged encounter at Turf Moor this weekend, with last Friday’s chastening 3-0 home loss to struggling Norwich the final straw for the Watford hierarchy. A club statement read: “Watford Football Club confirms the departure of head coach Claudio Ranieri. “The Hornets’ board recognises Claudio as a man of great integrity and honour, who will always be respected here at Vicarage Road for his efforts in leading the team with dignity. “However the board feels that, with nearly half of the Premier League campaign remaining, a change in the head coach position now will give a new appointment sufficient time to work with a talented squad to achieve the immediate goal of retaining Premier League status. “No further club comment will be made until this new appointment is confirmed in due course.” Ranieri has had a varied management career, with Watford the fourth different Premier League club he has managed. The 70-year-old spent time in charge of Chelsea and Fulham, but is best known for his incredible job at the Leicester helm. Tipped for relegation and priced by bookmakers at 5,000-1 to win the title, Ranieri oversaw one of the greatest-ever sporting triumphs by leading the unfancied Foxes to the Premier League crown in 2015-16.

#PLStories- Liverpool issues statement after former chief executive Peter Robinson passes away #BHAFC #LFC

Peter Robinson worked with Liverpool from 1965 to 2000 and oversaw the team win 29 trophies. Prior to his time at Anfield, he had previously worked at Brighton and Hove Albion, Stockport County and Scunthorpe United. The 86-year-old, who worked with managers including Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish, died on Wednesday, January 19. A statement from Liverpool on their website said: "Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former club secretary and chief executive Peter Robinson. "Robinson was a pivotal behind-the-scenes figure at Anfield throughout a 35-year spell, which began shortly before the Reds’ first FA Cup triumph in 1965, when he joined as club secretary following jobs at Stockport County, Crewe Alexandra, Scunthorpe United and Brighton and Hove Albion. "In close and constructive partnership with chairman John Smith, he oversaw a modernisation of the club’s administrative operations with the objective of freeing managers to focus on their top priority: winning on the pitch. "He and Smith were closely involved in player recruitment during an era when the Reds repeatedly achieved masterstrokes in the transfer market. "And the pair drove forward improvements at Anfield, including a new Main Stand and floodlighting – under which so many special nights would unfold – in the early 1970s. "It was a set-up that helped to deliver overwhelming success as Liverpool became a dominant force – and trophy-gathering machine – first at home and then on the continent."
Leo Ostigard

#PLStories- Brighton defender Leo Ostigard joins Andriy Shevchenko‘s Genoa on loan #BHAFC

DEFENDER Leo Ostigard has been recalled from his spell with Stoke City and is moving to Serie A side Genoa on loan for the rest of the season. The 22-year-old made 13 Championship appearances for the Potters, scoring once in a 3-1 victory at Swansea City. Albion's pathway development manager David Weir said: “Leo has made excellent progress during his loan spells in the second tier in Germany and here in the Championship, with Coventry and Stoke, but this gives him the chance to play at the top level. “It is an excellent opportunity to play in the top division of Italian football, against some of Europe's top teams, and we will be monitoring his progress out in Italy.” Ostigard signed for Albion from Molde in 2018, before spending the 2019/20 campaign on loan with German second division side St Pauli. That was followed by a successful 2020/21 campaign with Coventry City, where he helped Mark Robins’ side maintain their Championship status having returned to the second tier after an eight-year absence.
Carl Rushworth

#PLStories- Brighton confirm new deal for promising young goalkeeper Carl Rushworth #BHAFC

ALBION have confirmed that goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has signed a new contract with the club until June 2025. The 20-year-old is currently on a season long loan with League Two Walsall, where he has kept eight clean sheets in 28 games in all competitions. Technical director Dan Ashworth said, "Carl has continued to impress us with his development since joining the club in 2019 and he fully deserves this new contract. "He has trusted the pathway we have put him on, starting with a really positive loan with Worthing, followed by a year with the under-23s and is now testing and proving himself in League Two with Walsall. Carl Rushworth, credit BHAFC/ Paul Hazlewood "This season was about Carl showing what he has learned so far and building on that. We’re pleased to see that he is flourishing." Albion's first-team goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts said: "Carl has been a breath of fresh air since joining the club from Halifax Town, and relished every challenge that has come his way. "He is a consummate professional on and off the field, with a real dedication to his craft. He epitomises what we look for from the modern, in-possession goalkeeper, and look forward to supporting his development in the years to come." Rushworth is currently on loan at Walsall The keeper came through the ranks with Huddersfield Town, before joining Halifax Town in 2017. He signed for Albion in January 2019 and spent the 2019/20 season on loan in the Isthmian League Premier Division with Worthing. A campaign with Albion under-23s followed, and he capped that by winning the club's Men's Young Player of the Year Award. He signed for the Saddlers at the beginning of this season, and his form with Matt Taylor’s men was rewarded with a call-up to the England under-21s squad in October.
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Southampton CEO Martin Semmens discusses club’s sporting project in detail with regards to multi-club network #SAINTSFC

SAINTS CEO Martin Semmens has explained how a multi-club network could work under Sport Republic and admitted: “We are aware of potential clubs that might come into the mix, but it’s way too early to talk about that.” The plans under Sport Republic, which is an entirely independent investment firm that have purchased Saints, suggest that the St Mary’s outfit could become a centre-piece of a group of football clubs across the world. The ideas are reminiscent of something similar to what Red Bull have achieved, who have successful football clubs based in Leipzig, Salzburg, New York and Sao Paulo. Red Bull utilise their network to frequently transfer talent between teams for relatively nominal fees, as manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be familiar with having coached the German side for two years. Read more In 2020, Hwang hee-Chan, now of Wolves, moved between Salzburg and Leipzig for under £10million, while Dominik Szoboszlai – who is considered one of Europe’s hottest talents – was discovered by Salburg’s reserve team, FC Liefering, moved to the main Austrian team and then later transferred to Leipzig for a cheap price in 2021. Red Bull Leipzig were Champions League semi-finalists in 2019-20 (Pic: PA) Of course, Red Bull began to set up these teams in the mid-2000s and are almost two decades deep into their development, but these ideals are perhaps what Sport Republic and chairman Henrik Kraft are inspired by. Semmens explains how the takeover could benefit Saints, telling BBC Radio Solent: “What they will bring to us is proprietary technology, data and systems that make us better. “They will help us build better scouting and player trading, collaboration and models, but I think more importantly than anything, they believe in the player pathway as we do and a multi-club model allows us to take that forward to a new level. Saints CEO Martin Semmens and managing director Toby Steele “What that means is, if you build a network of clubs and you build the best people and the best data, and the best insight, it gives you that minor advantage that we can gain without spending huge amounts of money.” He continued: “I think together we see an opportunity to build a set of clubs that play in the same way from the same playbook. “To have academies that are similar and develop players in the same way, produce young men and young women to a level that we think fits our level and helps us with that pathway. “So, the other clubs, it's early in its development this project. We are aware of potential other clubs that might come into the mix, but it's way too early to talk about that. Sport Republic lead investor Dragan Solak (Pic: United Group) “But the structure would be they will sit within Sport Republic and we will collaborate with them. But the ownership sits at Sport Republic level.” The production line of Red Bull’s footballing talent speaks for itself, and it’s a list that many Saints fans will be familiar with one way or another. Sadio Mane, Erling Haaland, Joshua Kimmich, Timo Werner, Takumi Minamino to name but a few. Former Saint Sadio Mane was picked up by Red Bull Salzburg as a youngster despite an unprolific season with Metz However, all the talk of multi-club networks and stuff that sounds reminiscent of football franchising can be daunting, so Semmens was keen to stress that Saints’ board operate unchanged – Sport Republic merely exist as external owners and collaborators. “First and foremost, all operations are unchanged as they were yesterday,” Semmens insisted. “They are today and the leadership in the operations here at the same. 💬 Semmens adds that #SaintsFC went looking for owners that had these three things:Good people. ✅Experience in elite sports (cites Rasmus Ankersen). ✅Committed to a plan the 'Southampton way', not buying success but creating it and having a development mindset. ✅ — Alfie House (@AlfieHouseEcho) January 4, 2022 “And then I think the second thing to stress is Sport Republic is a business that will build a network of clubs. “Those gentlemen you mentioned, Dragan (Solak), Henrik (Kraft) and Rasmus (Ankersen) will run that business and they will work with us and support our club and we will work to help and support Sport Republic, but they don't have active roles in the club. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be working under the same Saints board as before the takeover (Pic: Stuart Martin) “If you want to go one level more technical than that, we have an ownership group and ownership board that Henrik and Rasmus will sit on alongside Katharina (Liebherr), myself and Toby (Steele). “We will take care of the club's management at that highest level at that point, but the board of the football club as it stands today is the same.”
Gao Jisheng Southampton Owner

#PLStories- Saints CEO Martin Semmens on January transfer strategy #SAINTSFC

SAINTS CEO Martin Semmens warns fans not to expect huge change in transfer strategy but admits the takeover does leave the club "in a better position than yesterday with room for another one or two". Saints confirmed the sale of chairman Gao Jisheng’s 80 per cent share to new company Sport Republic, formed by lead investor and Serbian media mogul Dragan Solak. He is supported by co-founders Henrik Kraft and Rasmus Ankersen, who want to bring a new multi-club portfolio style enterprise with Saints as the centre-piece. Under Gao, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has had to operate a club which lives within its means and sells much more than it is able to spend. Former Saints majority shareholder Gao Jisheng Yet, the Austrian has been able to keep Saints competitive in England’s top-flight – however, even with new owners supporters should not expect a Newcastle-style gung-ho approach to the upcoming transfer windows. Asked what it means for Saints’ transfer plans, Semmens explained to BBC Radio Solent: “I think it's really important to answer that clearly. “So I think the most important thing is we have a plan in place. We have a strategic plan – it’s sitting on my desk in front of me and that's what Sport Republic have bought into and we will continue on that path. “So the transfer window, we will always do our way and you're very aware of that. But are we in a better position today than we were yesterday? Absolutely. “It allows us to focus in on the things we're doing already potentially doing a bit quicker. "As I think, I heard you say, as I was tuning in, the (Tino) Livramento, one is a really important one for us.” Tino Livramento was signed from Chelsea's academy in the summer (Pic: PA) He continued: “Does that give us an opportunity to do another one or two? Yes, it does. “So I don't think you'll see a massive change in operations, but does it leave us in a better position than yesterday? Yes, it does.” As well as just desiring more muscle in the transfer market, fans will also be concerned with the day-to-day finances of the club after a difficult two years. Semmens has moved to confirm that the takeover improves the club’s situation. “Yeah, I think it does,” he added. “It's very hard to answer that question without getting too technical. “But I think the right way to answer is in the short term, yes. We are absolutely fine as we were, we’re progressing, but in our own way and I think this gives us short term security. “It gives us absolutely clarity about where we are and security in the short term and long term. “There are series’ of investments and multi club models and stuff that will allow us to be even better in the future. So, without doubt it leaves as in a much better financial situation.”
