Tottenham Hotspur have released a statement after Son Heung-min was allegedly racially abused online during the Premier League match against West Ham United.
The Spurs star started the game on the bench but was brought on in the second half and scored his side’s second of the game. The Lilywhites ran out 2-0 winners but Tottenham have now issued a statement over what they have described as “utterly reprehensible” abuse online directed at Son during the fixture.
In a statement published on Twitter,
Tottenham Hotspurs said: “We have been made aware of the utterly reprehensible online racist abuse directed at Heung-Min Son during today’s match, which has been reported by the Club. We stand with Sonny and once again call on the social media companies and authorities to take action.”
This is not the first occasion surrounding racist remarks made towards the Spurs forward, after Chelsea had announced that one of their season ticket holders has been ‘banned for life’ after an incident earlier this season. Brentford forward Ivan Toney also received racist abuse following the Bees’ 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last week, with the club issuing a statement saying they were “disgusted and saddened”. The fixture was taking place during the Premier League’s ‘No Room for Racism’ campaign, which has been held over the last two gameweeks. Heung min Son said: ”The racism we are talking about, we know I have been abused here in England, I think the best reaction is to not react at all. We are playing as humans and it doesn’t matter what country you come from, it doesn’t matter what human you are, we are playing football.”
