Ivan Toney has once again been linked with a transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brentford striker is reportedly attracting interest from Wolves, Arsenal, West Ham and former employers Newcastle United as clubs prepare to scramble for his signature in the summer. Wolves Technical director Scott Sellars namechecked Toney when discussing the quality of talent on offer in the Championship last year, but Wolves weren’t interested due to the 26-year-old’s £30m-plus asking price. Addressing Wolves’ preference to sign players from overseas instead of the Championship,
Scott Sellars said: “I don’t think that we’re not (interested in Championship players). We’ve looked at some of the successes. You have to be straightforward and say that a lot of our players are Championship players – Conor Coady, Ruben Neves, they all played in the Championship for Wolves. We understand what a strong league it is. The difference is the cost and the transfer fees, as we’ve seen with Ollie Watkins and people like that. They talk about Toney now at Brentford – the transfer fees are very high. Sometimes it’s ‘is it the best value?’ But it’s certainly a market that we think is very appealing and also a good gauge for players that could easily come into the Premier League, so it’s something that we’ll look at.”
Toney was all set to move to Molineux in 2014 after a £500,000 deal was struck with Northampton Town, but the forward’s failed medical scuppered the transfer. He went on to join Newcastle before dropping down the leagues and working his way back to the Premier League.
