#PLStories- Brighton’s #EnockMwepu is ready for the intensity of the Premier League #BHAFC

Brighton's summer signing Enock Mwepu has insisted he is ready to cope with the intensity of playing in the Premier League. The 23-year-old midfielder joined the Seagulls last week from Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg. He has been used to intense matches previously when playing for Salzburg in the Champions League. Joel Veltman, who joined Albion last summer, compared the ferocity of the Prem to playing in the Champions League every week. Read more: Joel Veltman believes the intensity of the Premier League is like playing in the 'Champions League every week' But the Zambian international admits he is looking forward to that intensity week-in-week out in the Prem. Speaking the club’s website in his first interview since signing, he said: “That is something I am looking forward to. “I have watched the Premier League quite a lot of times, so I know that week-in-week-out it is so intense, so I am looking forward to that. “For me the Champions League you play one game and the intensity is really high, but here it is like that week-in-week-out from the start of the season to the end. “So, I just want to get fit, get ready in the pre-season and when we start the league for sure I am looking forward to that intensity and will be good to go.” Mwepu also revealed that he already feels at home with the Seagulls after receiving a warm welcome from everyone at the club. He said: “It feels like home already, my teammates have already welcomed me very well and the coaches have welcomed me as well, so I really feel at home already. So I am really happy about it.” He added: “I am trying to remember all the names but Danny (Welbeck), Percy (Tau) and the Lewis (Dunk) the skipper. “They are already trying to have a laugh and a joke with me. “The other day I forgot my shoes because I was going out the training centre and they were like the computer has to do everything at once. So I said sorry its need an upgrade.”
Matt Clarke

#PLStories- Brighton’s #MattClarke joins West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan #WBAFC #BHAFC

Brighton defender Matt Clarke has joined recently relegated Championship side, West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan. The 24-year-old joined the Seagulls in the summer of 2019 on a four-year deal from League One side Portsmouth as one of Graham Potter’s first signings at the club but has yet to make an appearance. It will be the third consecutive season that the centre-back has spent on loan in the Championship having spent the previous two campaigns at Derby. In his two seasons at Pride Park, he made 81 appearances and scored one goal. Albion’s pathway development manager David Weir said: “Matt has done very well in his time with Derby, and shown he is very adept at Championship level and there was no shortage of clubs interested in taking him on loan. “Having just come down from the Premier League, West Bromwich Albion will be pushing for an instant return to the top level, and Matt will no doubt go there with that aim. "We will be monitoring his progress and wish him well for the new season ahead.” Clarke will be looking to help the Baggies win promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking under new manager Valerien Ismael. The French-German head coach guided Barnsley to a fifth-place finish in the Championship last season, before losing to Swansea in the play-off semi-finals. Clarke becomes the West Brom head coach’s third summer signing, after he secured the services of his captain at Barnsley, Alex Mowatt on a free transfer and highly rated midfielder Quevin Moises Castro on a free transfer, after he previously been on trial with Chelsea and Arsenal.

#PLStories- Brighton striker #ViktorGyokeres joins Coventry City #BHAFC

Albion striker Viktor Gyokeres has left the club to join Championship side Coventry for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old joined Albion in January 2018 but only made eight appearances for them during that time, with four coming in the Carabao Cup and the other four in the FA Cup. His only goal for the Seagulls came in September in their 4-0 win over Portsmouth at the Amex in the Carabao Cup second round. He then joined Championship side Swansea on a season-long loan in October. But after scoring just two goals in 13 appearances and only making nine starts, Gyokeres saw his loan cut short in January and he then joined fellow Championship side Coventry. In his 19 appearances for the Sky Blues, he scored three goals and has now made the switch to Mark Robins’ side permanent. Albion techncial dorector Dan Ahworth said: "This represents a good move for Viktor, as well as both clubs. He’s spent the last two years out on loan, but this gives him the chance to really settle in one place and play regularly at a really high standard, which at 23 is paramount for his own development. “Coventry were impressed with the impact he made in his relatively short time there last season and that can be an added confidence boost for Viktor. We wish him all the best for the future.”

The 20-year-old striker, who has been with Albion since the age of 12, impressed on his first loan away from the club at League One side AFC Wimbledon. In his first season of regular senior football, Longman made 52 appearances in all competitions for the Dons, scoring nine goals and getting five assists in all comeptitions. That helped Wimbledon to avoid relegation from League One. He also played a key role in helping them to reach the Quarter-Finals of the Papa John's Trophy before being knocked out by fellow League One side Oxford United. After signing his new deal, Albion's technical director Dan Ashworth admits Longman is likely to head out on loan again to continue his development. He said: "Ryan really proved himself in men's football last season with Wimbledon, impressing David Weir and his team and has earned this new contract. "Ryan is keen to continue to learn and wants to build on what that experience has given him. "We are currently reviewing his situation, and that is likely to involve another season on loan, but we are confident he has another good year ahead of him."

Crofts said: “We are delighted that we are able to bring a player like Jeremy in, who we’ve watched extensively during his time with both Charlton and Benfica. “The pathway we have in place was a big factor in Jeremy choosing us ahead of many suitors, which is of huge credit to the academy and first-team staff. “We look forward to welcoming Jeremy and seeing him in action with the under-23s in the near future.”

#PLStories- #BenWhite says When I was at Saints I didn’t have any confidence’ #BHAFC SAINTSFC

ENGLAND defender Ben White admitted he “didn’t have any confidence” coming through the youth ranks at Saints before reviving his career at Brighton. The 23-year-old grew up in the south, attending Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, while also playing football for county side Poole and East Dorset. His path to the top was far from straightforward, released by Saints as a teenager and coming through lower league loan spells, before helping Leeds United clinch promotion from the Championship and now establishing himself as a key centre-back for Brighton. Now part of England’s Euro 2020 group, White could feature in Gareth Southgate’s squad when they take on Germany in the last 16 on Tuesday. But the centre-back admits he is a totally different person now than when he found himself struggling in the academy at Saints. “When I was at Southampton I didn’t have any confidence,” he told talkSPORT. “The way I play now is with a lot of confidence. It’s the complete opposite of what I used to be. “I think coming through Brighton the coaches and the people really believed in me. “I think you get that with playing and at Southampton I was on the sidelines a lot. But I went Brighton and went straight into the team and played. “It’s tough when you get released and you’re not wanted. Especially when you’re young, it’s hard to deal with. “You either sink or swim, but for me I obviously wanted it a lot and it was the only thing I wanted at the time, so I went for it.” The defender has this summer been linked with a big money move to Arsenal, but insists his only focus at present is on progressing with England. Speaking about that speculation, White added: “It’s nice, it’s happened quite a lot over the last two years, there’s been a lot of noise. “You don’t know what’s true and what’s not. So there’s no real point talking about it.”

#PLStories- #BenWhite says he doesn’t discusses transfer ‘noise’ #BHAFC

Ben White says he doesn’t talk about transfer “noise” while on England duty. The Albion defender has been linked with Arsenal amid reports of a failed £40 million bid. There was suggestion on Thursday that a deal was close with the Gunners. However The Argus were told that was NOT the case – and that White has attracted interest from several clubs. It is a second successive summer of transfer speculation around the defender, who is with Gareth Southgate’s 26-man party at Euro 2020. White suggested it was nice to be wanted as he spoke to talkSPORT as a part of his England media commitments. He said: “It’s nice. It has happened quite a lot over the last two years, there’s been a lot of noise.” Asked whether he talks about it with other England players, he replied: “Not really. “You don’t know what’s true and what’s not. So there’s no real point talking about it.” Albion are in no rush to do business and have no particular need or desire to sell White.

Brighton midfielder Davy Propper has ended his four-year stint on the South Coast and re-joined his former side PSV Eindhoven for an undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old joined Albion in August 2017 and was a regular in the Albion starting XI in his first three years with the club making 95 appearances in the Premier League. But a number of injuries saw him make just 11 appearances in all competitions last season. In total the Dutch international made 121 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring twice.  He was also part of the Seagulls side that reached the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley in 2019, before being beaten by the eventual winners Manchester City. Head coach Graham Potter said: “Davy has been great to work with during my two years here and he has played an important role in maintaining the club’s Premier League status since he joined the club. “He is well thought of around the club and it was frustrating for both him and I that he had a number of setbacks with injuries last season. "This move gives him the chance to hopefully play more regularly and we wish him the best of luck with his future career."

#PLStories- Brighton star #JakubModer reacts to Poland’s draw with Spain #BHAFC

Jakub Moder believes he helped Poland answer a few critics against Spain. But he accepts they had a bit of luck in a 1-1 draw in Seville at Euro 2020. The recalled Albion midfielder played a key role in the Robert Lewandowski goal which gave Poland their point. He then conceded a penalty from which Gerard Moreno hit the post. Poland kept alive qualification hopes which were under severe threat after their opening defeat by Slovakia. Moder said: “We've had some luck that we didn't have in previous games. "I saw a lot of negative comments about us. That we will lose 4-0 or 5-0. “Virtually every player got hit for the match with Slovakia. “Within our group, no one doubted and, even when there were some negative moments, we put it out of our heads.” Although Moder looked to be unhappy at the time, he said he could have no complaints about the penalty, which was awarded after video review. Alexis Mac Allister has thanked Albion for allowing him to fulfil his Olympics dream. He sat out the squad’s recent trip to Spain, which included a training camp and two friendlies. Mac Allister played a huge role in leading Argentina through qualifiers before joining up with Albion early last year. #PLStories- Brighton chairman #TonyBloom says best is yet to come from Brighton academy #BHAFC

But he is “really encouraged” by progress made since the club stepped up their investment in player development. Academy graduates Robert Sanchez and Ben White are currently on international duty with Spain and England respectively at Euro 2020. Another reminder of the talent emerging came this week as under-23s skipper Teddy Jenks went on loan to Scottish big guns Aberdeen. Jenks will be tackling top-tier and European football with the Dons. Although many fans will hope not, White could provide a massive pay-off if he leaves this summer. What the club have been saved in transfer fees and wages can only be guessed at – but, for Bloom, it is still early days. Albion’s chairman told The Argus: “It was a huge decision to make, not only to find the first team a training ground but we put a huge amount of infrastructure and resources into the academy set-up which was always going to be long-term. “It’s eight years on and we are still early days, still catching up with some other clubs who have had this infra-structure in for many years before us. “But I am really encouraged by how the academy is doing, the players it is bringing forward. Even if some of the players on the verge of our squad don’t quite get into it, they have got an opportunity to perhaps be transferred and play in the Championship or League One. “We really want all of our players to do as well as they can and to ideally be professionals. “Obviously there is always disappointment, there is always a significant percentage who can’t do that. “But our job is to help those players get the best careers they can lower down the pyramid if they are not going to be in our squad. “So overall really encouraging and huge credit to (academy director) John Morling and all the staff.” Albion have combined local players with those signed from around the globe in their academy squads. They lead the way in terms of Prem minutes by homegrown players while the under-18s won their Premier League cup last season. It was put to Bloom that, rather than playing catch-up, Albion are now forging ahead in terms of academy football. But he is cautious when asked to go that far. He replied: “Eight years in terms of an academy, because you start from under-nines, is not a long time. “But, given the results and given the players coming through, we may have caught up with a lot of clubs and perhaps even overtaken them. That’s the goal. Let’s see how the next few years go. “But its really encouraging, the last few years in particular.” There are clearly high hopes for Jenks, who was a dominant force striding forward from midfield in the 23s last season. Speaking on the Footy, The Albion And Three podcast towards the end of the season, former skipper Gordon Greer backed Jenks to go into a competitive senior league environment in the 2021-22 campaign. He said: “Teddy is a player who I think the next step for him is to get a loan move and play in the league. LEANDRO TROSSARD HOPES TO GET ON FOR BELGIUM SPAIN PUT ROBERT SANCHEZ IN THE FIRING LINE “Jensen Weir has impressed as well. Again, the next step would be to get out and play in the league somewhere.” Weir could well follow Jenks out on loan. There will also be much interest in another top academy prospect in goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who was named the club’s young player of the season for 2020-21.

England star Kalvin Phillips has revealed he told Ben White he was confident of making a big impact against Croatia. The Leeds midfielder capped an impressive performance by laying on the winner for Raheem Sterling on Sunday. He became good mates with White while the Albion defender was on loan at Elland Road. Phillips said today: “It was weird. I had a mad feeling before the game that I was maybe going to score. Shane Duffy

#PLStories- Brighton’s #ShaneDuffy wants to get back to his best next season #BHAFC

The 29-year-old had a tough time during his loan spell at Celtic. After a great start to life in Scotland, where he helped Celtic win their five league games and scored two goals in the process, his form dipped. He played the last game of his loan spell in their 2-1 win over St Johnstone on February 14. On top of that, the Republic of Ireland international was also targeted by social media trolls. But Duffy is now hoping to rediscover his best form with Albion next season. He said: "I think it has been well noted I've had a tough time on and off the pitch. I feel that I've dealt with it as best I can. "I didn't plan for it to go like this, but that's the setback I've got and I'm big and ugly enough to deal with it and come out the other side. "This season is over now, and I feel mentally I've turned a page, and I'm not going to stop now. “I'm going to keep going through the summer and be ready for pre-season and hit the ground running. "I feel I've had a year off where I haven't played my best stuff and I am ready to get that back next season." Duffy is currently on international duty with Ireland, where he played the full 90 minutes in their 0-0 draw against Hungary in a friendly, who will compete in the Euros which gets underway tomorrow. Ireland had a tough start to their World Cup qualifying campaign in March, after losing to Serbia (3-2) and Luxembourg (1-0), meaning they sit fourth in group A having yet to pick up a point. But with Portugal, Azerbaijan, and Serbia to come in September, their task will not get any easier. However, Duffy who played represented Ireland at Euro, the last time they qualified for a major competition, believes it would be stupid to write off their World Cup hopes just two games into the qualifying campaign. He said: "You always have that belief. It was only a couple of games played and if you write us off now, it would be stupid, I'd say. "We're just getting going, hopefully, and it's about the performances turning into results and we'll shock a few teams hopefully and kick on. "We fully believe the manager has the right thing going here and with a little bit of luck with players and Covid and stuff like that, we can kick on."

#PLStories- #BenWhite insists his England call-up has been ten years in the making #BHAFC

Brighton defender Ben White insisted his England call-up has been ten years in the making. The 23-year-old caught the eye of many in the 2019/20 season with his performances for Leeds in the Championship as he helped them win promotion back to the Premier League. However, prior to that he had been a regular in his first two loan spells away from Albion at Legaue Two side, Newport County and League One side, Peterborough United respectively. This season he made 36 appearances in his debut campaign in the Premier League for Albion. But White has stressed that his England call-up has come from ten years of hard work and not just his performances for Leeds in the 2019/20 season.  He said: "I wasn't made last year, I think I have worked hard for ten years and it doesn't suddenly come in a year and you are doing well. "I had two loans before that and played quite a few games there so that has helped me build and perform at the level that I have."

#PLStories- #BenWhite discusses his release from Saints squad and time at the academy #SAINTSFC #BHAFC

JAMES Ward-Prowse missed out on being England’s 26th man for Euro 2020 after defender Ben White was added to the squad. The Saints skipper impressed during the Three Lions’ 1-0 friendly win over Romania on Sunday before being replaced in the 65th-minute. Many thought Ward-Prowse would be the man to occupy the spot left void by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was forced to withdraw through injury last week. But 23-year-old White, who featured in Saints’ academy growing up before being released, earned the call to book his place at the tournament. Brighton centre-back White made his debut in last week’s 1-0 friendly win over Austria and impressed as he started alongside Tyrone Mings in the victory against Romania. Everton defender Ben Godfrey and Saints star Ward-Prowse were options who both started the Romania game, while Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins were also on the standby list, but will now return home. White grew up in the south, attending Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, while also playing football for county side Poole and East Dorset. Asked who was in Saints' academy at the same time as him, White told YouTube channel GAFFER: "I think (Alex Oxlade) Chamberlain, Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse), (Jack) Stephens, who are all playing in the Premier League now. “They’re not really my age, they were three years older than me, but they were the ones that I was watching. "After training they would be playing on the Saturday and I’d watch all their games." Discussing his release from Saints, White said: "It was hard. I didn’t get anything at 16. You’re just booted out and that’s it really. "You’re done and you’ve got to find your own way back. Luckily I managed to do that and get my trial at Brighton." White’s inclusion was announced by the Football Association on Monday morning as the team continue preparations for their European Championship opener against Croatia. Having trained in Middlesbrough, with both friendlies taking place at the Riverside Stadium, the squad will now be based at St George’s Park. Euro 2020 kicks off on Friday night, with England’s clash with Croatia at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Yesterday he was then handed his first start in their 1-0 win over Romania. In total he has kept two clean sheets in both of his caps so far. The 23-year-old started and played the full 90 minutes for England in their 1-0 win over Romania in friendly at the Riverside Stadium yesterday evening. He became the first Albion player to start for England since skipper Lewis Dunk in a friendly against the USA at Wembley in November 2018. He partnered Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings at centre-half as part of a back four with Everton’s Ben Godfrey at right back and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw at left back. His performance earnt him plaudits from former England internationals Ian Wright and Lee Dixon, who were impressed by how ‘calm’ and ‘composed’ he was, with Dixon picking out White’s as the best performers in the back four. But after the game Gareth Southgate refused to be drawn on who will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, with White one of six players in the running for the vacant spot in his their 26-man squad for the Euros. He said: “We will check how we are after the game medically and check there is nothing else we need to go through, so we will make that decision in the next 24 hours.” The only goal of the game came in the 68th minute after substitute Tiberiu Capusa’s pulled down Jack Grealish in the box. Marcus Rashford stepped up and calmly tucked his effort into the bottom corner. England won another penalty in the 77th minute after Vlad Chiriches bundled Dominic Calvert-Lewin over. Substitute Jordan Henderson took it but saw his effort saved by Sparta Prague’s Florin Nita. England had been unlucky not to take the lead in the first half after Calvert-Lewin’s header and Jadon Sancho’s curling effort both came back off the crossbar.

The 37-year-old rejoined Albion in July 2019 to combine a playing role with coaching duties for the under-23s.  However, after under-23's manager Simon Rusk left in January to join National League side Stockport County as their manager, Crofts and Shannon Ruth stepped up to become the interim head coaches. But after guiding Albion to a ninth-place in the BPL 2, Crofts has been named as head coach. While, Ruth has been promoted to senior professional development coach and will continue to work with Crofts.  During his time with Albion the former Welsh international played 125 games in his two spells on the South Coast, scoring 13 goals. He also won 29 senior caps for Wales. Albion's technical director Dan Ashworth said: “We’re delighted that Crofty has accepted this position. “He is passionate about coaching and developing young players and this is a great opportunity for him.  “Shannon will now have a wider coaching brief having previously worked with our younger goalkeepers and we wish them every success for the future.”
Jose Izquierdo Brighton

#PLStories- #JoseIzquierdo to leave Brighton when his contract expires #BHAFC

Jose Izquierdo will leave Brighton when his contract expires at the end of this month. The 28-year-old joined in August 2017 from Belgian giants Club Brugge. He played an important part in helping them stay in the Premier League in his debut season making 32 appearances, scoring five goals and getting four assists. Those five goals included two great strikes against West Ham. However over the last two seasons Izquierdo has been hampered by a serious knee injury, which led to him missing a chunk of the 2018/19 season as well as the whole of the 2019/20 season. In October Izquierdo made his return from injury for Albion’s Under-23’s and scored the winner against West Ham. He went on to play a further four matches for the 23’s over the next month. But Izquierdo’s comeback was then halted as he suffered a thigh injury. He worked his way back to full fitness and made his first appearance for Albion since June 2019, as he came off the bench in April against Sheffield United. Albion’s technical director Dan Ashworth said: “Jose has been unfortunate with injury over the last couple of years. “But he played a key role in helping the club establish itself in the Premier League and he has always been a positive presence around the squad. “We wish him all the best for the future and thank him for his services to the club.”
Danny Welbeck

#PLStories- #PaulBarber would love #DannyWelbeck to stay at Brighton #BHAFC

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber would love to keep Danny Welbeck at the club next season, but knows they could face competition to secure his signature. The 30-year-old scored six goals for the Seagulls this season after joining on a free transfer in October, with only Neal Maupay (8) having scored more. But with his contract due to expire at the end of this month, Barber would love the striker to stay. Speaking at Albion's fans forum on Tuesday night, he said: "He did a fantastic job for us and I think anyone who doubted that Danny [Welbeck] was still capable of playing at this level have had their questions answered by the performances that he gave us. "Obviously we would love Danny back next season. "The plus side from what we saw is that he did a great job for us, the downside of what we saw is that makes him attractive to other clubs as well. "Therefore we go into a position where we would love Danny to be with us next year but we also know that he is even more desirable because of the opportunity he took with us and did a good job with us. "So we are certainly talking to Danny and we will see where we get to over the next few weeks." Welbeck's six goal for the Seagulls was his best return in the Premier League since the 2013/14 season where he scored nine goals in 30 appearances for Manchester United. His 24 appearances for Albion was also the most he has made in a season since 2017/18 where he made 43 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal.
Ben White Leeds

#PLStories- #GarethSouthgate reveals Brighton’s #BenWhite was always aware he was not heading to Euros #BHAFC

England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed that Brighton defender Ben White knew he was coming in for the experience and the friendlies rather than the Euros. The 23-year-old defender was called up as part of Southgate's 33-man provisional squad last week. But he was one of the seven players to miss out on the chance to go to the Euros with England. However, Southgate revealed that the uncapped trio of White, Everton's Ben Godfrey and Sheffield United's Aaron Ramsdale knew they were coming in for the experience. He said: “You never want to give bad news. “It is lovely to give people debuts and bring people into the squad for the first time but it is much harder to deliver bad news. “This time, there were three boys who knew they were coming in for the experience of training with us and for these two matches, and who knows what might happen. "But they have trained really well.”

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray felt it was the right time to hang up his boots. Read more: Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray announces his retirement But Murray was content with the decision to end his playing career. He said: “I feel as though the time is right and I wanted to retire at a good level. “I’ve had a lot of good years in the game, but this seems the right time to call it a day. “I am getting off the football merry-go-round, the structure of being told what to do for 20 years. "I am looking forward to making some of my own decisions I suppose!" But Murray now looks to set to do more media work rather than go into coaching. He said: “I have got a lot of options, there are a lot of things going on in the background. "The media work is something I want to pursue and I am looking forward to starting a new chapter of my life. “Give me six months, a year and I might miss it so much that I want to give back to the club in some capacity as a coach. "But at the moment that isn’t the route I am going down.”
Ben White Leeds

#PLStories- #BenWhite remembers journey from Saints rejection to provisional England squad #BHAFC

POOLE-born talent Ben White has been named in England's provisional squad for this summer's European Championship. The 23-year-old grew up in the south, attending Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, while also playing football for county side Poole and East Dorset. His path to the top was far from straightforward, released by Saints as a teenager and coming through lower league loan spells, before helping Leeds United clinch promotion from the Championship last season and now establishing himself as a key centre-back for Brighton & Hove Albion. White has been named in Gareth Southgate's inflated 33-man selection, which will be whittled down to 26 next week ahead of the delayed Euro 2020 getting underway on June 11. Discussing his earliest memories of football, White told YouTube channel GAFFER: "In the garden with my mum. I’d be playing out there and she’d be hanging the washing up or something like that and I’d tell her to get in goal and boot the ball at her! She’d stay out there for hours with me." Asked when he first started playing as part of a team, White added: "I joined a little local side on a Sunday, played that for a season or so. I was playing midfield. "Then I had a trial at Southampton at the end of that season." Asked who was in Saints' academy at the same time as him, White continued: "I think (Alex Oxlade) Chamberlain, Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse), (Jack) Stephens, who are all playing in the Premier League now. They’re not really my age, they were three years older than me, but they were the ones that I was watching. "After training they would be playing on the Saturday and I’d watch all their games." White failed to make the grade at Saints, let go as a teenager. But he quickly found a new home, joining Brighton's academy in 2014. He spent time out on loan at Newport County and Peterborough United, before his successful season with Leeds. Discussing his release from Saints, White said: "It was hard. I didn’t get anything at 16. You’re just booted out and that’s it really. "You’re done and you’ve got to find your own way back. Luckily I managed to do that and get my trial at Brighton." White is one of six centre-backs in the provisional England squad. He is competing with the likes of John Stones, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady and Ben Godfrey for a place in the final 26-man group.

#PLStories- #GarethSouthgate explains call up of #BenWhite for England #LUFC

Gareth Southgate has explained why Ben White has made his provisional squad for the Euros. The England boss has hinted age and versatility hold the key both for the Albion man and Everton’s Ben Godfrey, who has also been included. Both players are 23. Southgate said: “They are both exciting young defenders, there are others we have been looking at that we really like. “These two are flexible, they play in different roles, this is a great opportunity to get to them a bit better for them to work with the team. BACKGROUND: BEN WHITE'S JOURNEY TO ENGLAND CALL REACTION: BEN WHITE ON HIS ENGLAND CALL “There is no way of knowing how long they will be with us at this stage but it should be a fantastic experience for them.” White has operated on the right of a back three, at right-back and in midfield for Albion this season.
Lewis Dunk Brighton

#PLStories- #GarethSouthgate explains why he picked #BenWhite over #LewisDunk #BHAFC

England boss Gareth Southgate has explained his reasons for selecting Albion defender Ben White over his skipper and teammate Lewis Dunk. The 23-year-old received his first call-up as part of Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad ahead of the more experienced option of Dunk, who has already been capped by England. However, his omission from the squad came as a surprise to some pundits and fans including former England defender and manager Stuart Pearce. Read More: Stuart Pearce is surprised by Lewis Dunk’s omission from England squad But Southgate has explained that age played a part in his decision to pick White instead of Dunk. He said: “It’s less that we see him (Ben White) ahead of Lewis (Dunk), but Ben is a younger player and there is a bit of an investment for the future there. “We know Lewis has had a very good season with Brighton and I know Graham (Potter) is delighted with what he has done for them. “With Ben we have tracked him since he has been on loan at Leeds we have seen him play in midfield, we have seen him play across the backline, he is comfortable with the ball and he has got pace. “So we know it is still early with centre backs like Ben White, Ben Godfrey, Fikayo (Tomori). Centre backs usually mature much later. “But these guys are getting good experience at a young age in some of the top leagues in the world, they are working with good coaches at their clubs and we think it is a good opportunity for them to come and work with us.”
Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- #GrahamPotter on #NealMaupay spat with referee #JonathanMoss #BHAFC

So now we know what Neal Maupay said to Jon Moss at Molineux. The full extent to which Albion’s striker lost his cool after the recent defeat at Wolves was spelt out in an FA report this week. The Seagulls are working to help their striker control his emotions at all times. But boss Graham Potter has revealed it might take a while to be where they need to be. Albion will be under Moss’s watchful eye for a third successive game when they go the Emirates. He reffed their defeat at Molineux and was VAR for the midweek win over Manchester City. Maupay will not be involved. Not directly because of his red card but rather his subsequent reaction which led to a further one-game ban. JOSE IZQUIERDO SUFFERS ANOTHER SETBACK Asked whether Albion were working to help their striker keep his emotions in check, Potter told The Argus: “We are and it’s an ongoing process. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen overnight. “You have got to make changes, you have got to do some work. “You have got to understand there is a possibility that can happen. “But then I think it is about how you manage everything daily. “It’s competition, it’s emotions. Sometimes the blood is rushing and you’ve got adrenaline and things happen. “That is part of football but it’s about managing it and keeping it under control. “In fairness to Neal, he has done that quite well over a period of time. “But, as he said and as we say, that time it wasn’t good and not acceptable and we had to accept the punishment and own up to it and try to improve.” The FA report was published just two days after Potter himself suffered an unprecedented loss of cool in his celebration of Albion’s first goal against Manchester City. Potter has admitted he made a mistake but will at least be able to empathise with Maupay. But then can’t we all if we think back? Potter said: “You sometimes forget they are human beings, they are young guys. “I don’t know what you were like when you were 24. “When I was 24, I was a lesser version of what I am now, that’s for sure. “You will make mistakes and it is just then how you respond to that. That’s the key. “If you can respond and say ‘Yeah, that wasn’t good’, own up and then try to do something about it, it’s an ongoing process.” Potter quickly apologised to Pep Guardiola for his own faux pas and revealed he has followed that up. He said: “We spoke after the game and I have got in touch through their guys to reiterate my apologies to them. “It wasn’t a great action from me. “Emotions got the better of me and caught up with me in the game. “As I have proven, I am a human being, not a robot, who is capable of making mistakes. “Hopefully they can judge me over a 46-year life, not a one-second action.”

#PLStories- #GrahamPotter pleased with Albion’s progress on the pitch #BHAFC

Graham Potter is pleased with the progress Albion have made as he celebrates two years in charge of the club. The Seagulls had just survived the drop in the Prem under previous manager Chris Hughton, when Potter took charge on May 20, 2019. Since coming in the 46-year-old has guided them to two consecutive 41-point finishes, with a game still to go in this campaign. This season they secured their safety in record time with three games to spare, meaning they can look forward to a record five successive season in the top flight. As Potter prepares for his side for their final game of the season against Arsenal, he believes they have made good progress. He said: “Sometimes it’s hard to reflect back when you’re in the middle of games, but when I do reflect back and think where the club was two years ago on the pitch, I am really pleased. “It’s difficult to come in and change things around in the Premier League because results are hard to get and if you don’t get them, then you can be thrown off course. “We’ve managed to stay relatively ok. We’ve had two lots of 41 points and this time round we’ve got a game to try and beat it. That’s really positive, the performance of the team has improved a lot. “The thing we need to try and get better is the points to match our performances. That’s football and the margins are quite small, especially at this level. “But I look at the individuals we’ve introduced, some younger players and academy players that gives us a chance going forward.” Potter also picked out the highlight of his tenure so far. He said: "It’s hard to look past Tuesday night to be honest. "The Arsenal game – the first one after lockdown, was really important. "But when there are no supporters it maybe isn’t the same. "The fact that the crowd were in for Manchester City was amazing. "There were 8000 people that were committed to the game, happy to be there watching live football, supporting the team, appreciating the quality on the pitch. "To get the win in that way, it was a fantastic evening. I can’t look too far past that.

#PLStories- #JoseIzquierdo ruled out of Albion trip to Arsenal #BHAFC

Jose Izquierdo has been hit by another injury setback. It could be the last of his troubled time with Albion as he nears the end of his current contract. The Colombia winger has been absent from the matchday 20 for the last two games and that will not change at Arsenal on Sunday. Izquierdo had one outing as sub at Sheffield United after his two-year absence due to knee operations. But he has not appeared again since and there must now be major doubts over his future with the Seagulls. Head coach Graham Potter said: “He won’t be available for the weekend. “We are looking into it at the moment but it’s a problem with his quad.” Joel Veltman and Davy Propper are again ruled out with Neal Maupay still suspended. But Lewis Dunk returns from a two-match ban. Potter said: “It’s good to have him back. “He was in a fantastic moment of form so it’s great for him to be able to finish the season on the pitch. “We’ve got a few missing. Whichever team we have, we will be competitive and will try our best.”

#PLStories- Burnley releases statement after #AshleyBarnes is arrested #BURNLEYFC

The 31-year-old was pulled over at 3am in near his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire last Tuesday, hours after Burnley had secured their's and Albion's Premier League status for next season with a 2-0 win over Fulham. He has since been charged with the offence and is set to appear before magistrates in Stockport on 14 June. Barnes was an unused substitute in their 3-0 defeat to Liverpool last night. Burnley released a statement which said:“Burnley Football Club is aware of a police incident involving one of its players, Ashley Barnes. “As a club with solid values and a strong community ethos, Burnley FC upholds and expects the highest standards of responsible behaviour from all its players and staff. ”Therefore, while observing the conclusion of legal proceedings, the club will be treating this matter with the upmost seriousness. “The player will be subject to internal disciplinary procedures as a result. “Burnley Football Club will make no further comment.”

#PLStories- #GrahamPotter is unsure what to expect as Albion fans return to the Amex #BHAFC

Albion head coach Graham Potter is not sure what to expect when fans return to the Amex tomorrow night to see them face the Premier League champions Manchester City (7pm). 8,000 Seagulls supporters will be in attendance as they face Pep Guardiola’s side in their penultimate game of the season. However, Potter knows it is going to be a momentous ocassion. He said: "It is (going to be a good day). "It's going to be strange, emotional I don’t know how it is going to be. "We have been away from the supporters for so long, you don't even get a feel for what they think really but we have just been trying to carry on winning games and we have missed that feedback you usually get with them in the ground “Supporters have made it quite clear when they are not happy and when they are happy and that is the beauty of football. "So we have missed that a lot and I don't think we could have asked for a better game to play to be honest. “Man City, the champions, the best team and hopefully everyone can come down and enjoy live football, which is wonderful." Potter was asked if he has had to remind his players about playing the game and not the occasion? To which he replied: "Well I think they are human beings, that have missed the crowd for a long time and we hope there is that connection between the fans and the players because that is the best thing about football. “You only have to see how the home advantage has disappeared without them a crowd pretty much which does not surprise me at all. “We hope that when we get there we can play well enough to get the crowd into the game. “I’m sure they will be supportive, but it helps them if we play well. So that is what we will try to do. “The emotion of the crowd and the emotion of the game is something we have missed. "So that is going to be interesting to see because both teams will have to adapt to the crowd again because we have been without them for so long and that is going to be interesting to factor that no one knows how it is going to go.

#PLStories- #GrahamPotter says draw is a fair result against West Ham #BHAFC

Albion head coach Graham Potter felt a draw was a fair result for Albion as they were held by West Ham at the Amex. The Seagulls took the lead in the 84th minute through Danny Welbeck, but a late strike from substitute Said Benrahma meant West Ham took a point back to London. But Potter felt a point was a fair reflection of the game. He said: "You are always a little bit disappointed when you are 1-0 up with not so long to go. "But at the same time I think over the course of the game a draw is a fair result. "I cannot say we deserved necessarily anything more. "I thought West Ham were better than us in the first half, they created some more danger than we did. "But we were okay in the first half, we were better in the second half but overall the boys did well."
David Moyes

#PLStories- #DavidMoyes says exceptional #LewisDunk will be sorely missed by Albion #BHAFC #WHUFC

West Ham manager David Moyes believes Albion will be tough to break down at the Amex tonight (8pm), but believes the absence of the “exceptional” Lewis Dunk could play into their hands. Graham Potter’s side have an impressive defensive record this season, despite being 17th in the table. Only Arsenal (38), Chelsea (33) and Manchester City (29) have conceded fewer goals in the Premier League this season than Albion (41). Despite that impressive record the Seagulls will be without Dunk, after he was shown a straight red in the 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Sunday. Moyes believes the 29-year-old will be sorely missed. He told The Argus: “It will be very tough, but I also think they go into the game without Lewis Dunk, who I think has been exceptional for them this season and has been for them in other seasons. “We have had to play the last six or more games without Declan Rice. “I would think if Brighton were playing a lot of the games without Lewis Dunk they might find it more difficult. “So who knows what will happen? “But Brighton are a hard team to beat. I went down and watched them a few weeks ago against Everton at the Amex and they played very well and I have been impressed by them so far this season.” Potter’s side have already secured their top flight status for next season, with three games to go after Fulham were beaten by Burnley on Monday and were relegated. But with the Seagulls being able to go into their final three matches with no pressure on them to get anything, will that make them a more dangerous opponent? Moyes told The Argus: “It can do, it is a difficult thing to weigh up in football. “We had a situation last season where we had the last game against Aston Villa, when we were already staying up and we could not raise ourselves. “So it can happen for no reason, so sometimes you are never sure with football. “But I think with Brighton they will know they have had a good season, but will be hoping they might have done better and not be floating around the bottom where we were last season. “They have got a really good, young and upcoming manager with a lot of good ideas in Graham. “But he will start to get some wrinkles really quick, like we all do when we have been in the game a long while. “But when you have too many years down the bottom it starts to grind you down a bit. “But it will be a really tough game against them.” Former Albion midfielder Jesse Lingard returns to the Amex tonight in fine form. The 28-year-old has impressed since joining West Ham, on loan from Manchester United in January. He has scored nine goals and got three assists in his 13 appearances for the Hammers. Last month he scored four goals in his just four games for Moyes’ side. That form saw Lingard named as the Premier League’s player of the month for April and his solo goal against Wolves won him the goal of the month as well. But Moyes believes he has thoroughly deserved the accolades he has got. He said: “His performances have been really good. “I have to say he has excelled and probably done better than we hoped when we first brought him in. “But you mustn’t forget Jesse has joined a good team, that was playing well when he came in and were near the top of the league. “So hopefully we have helped Jesse as well. Declan Rice, Aaron Cresswell, Mark Noble and Manuel Lanzini are all doubts for the trip to the Amex, but Moyes is hopeful some of them may be available tonight. He said: “Some of them are doing well, some of them aren’t doing so well, but I’m hoping to get some of them back for the game. “I’d rate Dec’s chances the same as Cresswell, Ogbonna and the rest of them. I wouldn’t want to give anything away.”
Adam Webster Brighton

#PLStories- #AdamWebster reveals frustration after Albion let another lead slip against West Ham #BHAFC

Adam Webster believes Albion must hold onto leads if they are going to kick on in the future. The Seagulls drew 1-1 at the Amex against West Ham, despite going ahead through Danny Welbeck's 50th Premier League goal. They have now dropped 25 points from winning positions this season, which is the most in the division and Webster admits things need to change. He said: “I don’t know if I am right but I think we have dropped the most points in the league from winning positions and that has got to change moving forward, if we really want to kick on as a club. “It is frustrating as it has happened too often this season.”
