Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl explains why Southampton loaned Nathan Tella to Burnley #SAINTSFC #BurnleyFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl has insisted he was already “fully convinced” by out-on-loan Nathan Tella, even before he began to excel in the Championship. The 23-year-old has become a fan favourite at Burnley after scoring three goals in his first eight matches, and contributing elsewhere too. The former Arsenal academy starlet got fans off their seats with an exceptional first touch and skill to win a penalty in a televised Friday evening clash with West Brom. Tella, who has made 41 appearances for Saints, could likely be contributing in Hasenhuttl’s first-team but at this stage of his injury-hit career, regular minutes were deemed most important. “Exactly, yeah. This is always the balance you have to find, you are fully convinced about this player but cannot give him the chance to develop,” Hasenhuttl told the Daily Echo, when asked about Tella. “The most important thing at this age is the guys are playing games every weekend, this is the only chance to make them better and bring them on to the highest level. "This is not always possible – only sessions and training. This is why we decided to let him go. Hopefully we won’t miss him for now. “We have more than only these guys who are willing to learn and willing to do a good job. This should be normally the standard.” The Austrian added: "We get reports after every weekend, which is normal I think. We are also watching them, we have a few players now in the Championship and they are doing quite well. "Nathan is scoring goals, Will Smallbone is always playing. This is exactly what we wanted them to do and we have them on our radar and we’re very happy they get the chance to play.” Tella was forced off the pitch with injury 73 minutes into a clash with Burnley's Lancashire rivals Preston North End, but returned in time for their next match versus Bristol City. Burnley, targeting automatic promotion under Vincent Kompany, currently sit fourth in the Championship table with 17 points from their opening 10 fixtures. Tella himself has spoken openly about enjoying his spell in Lancashire, which could see him play regularly in the Championship for the rest of the season. "When you are playing football you have no reason not to smile," said Tella. "I am really enjoying it and I feel like I am really coming out of my shell and I am playing with confidence and I want to keep that up. "I feel like everyone gets touches of the ball (in the system) we have a lot of possession and opportunities for the boys to show how good they are. I can't really fault it. “Some defences can push up and Jay Rodriguez likes to go in short so it gives me space to run into behind and gives me an opportunity to show my legs." Gary O’Neil

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil has reportedly ’emerged as a contender’ for Huddersfield job #AFCB

INTERIM Cherries boss Gary O’Neil has reportedly “emerged as a contender” for the vacant Huddersfield Town job. The Daily Mail claims the Championship Terriers “like O’Neil’s profile for their head coach role” and he is among “potential candidates under consideration”. Since Scott Parker was sacked at Cherries last month, the 39-year-old former Portsmouth and West Ham ace has guided the Dorset club to five points from three top-flight games. He has seen Cherries draw with Wolves and Newcastle, either side of a stunning 3-2 comeback victory over Nottingham Forest. Speaking about talks with Cherries’ board after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the Magpies, O’Neil said: “The talks this week will be about who is taking training this week, there will be nothing more than that. “The people upstairs will let me know. Richard Hughes or Neill Blake or whoever it is this time will let me know who is taking the team for training this week. “The boys have two days off, they will be due to be in after that. “I have no idea if I will be in charge, no clue. I’m really enjoying it, but I’m not interested in discussing what the future is for me really. “Let’s not take away from the fact that the boys have just given me absolutely everything, given the fans everything. We’ve had three good results from a real tough moment.” Huddersfield are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Danny Schofield last week. At the time of writing, former Terriers boss David Wagner was odds-on with SkyBet to get the job at John Smith’s Stadium.
Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- Gary O’Neil thinks Graham Potter leaving will not make difference in Brighton’s performance #AFCB #NFFC

GARY O’Neil believes Graham Potter’s departure from Brighton would not give Cherries any further advantage, as the south coast sides prepare to face off on Saturday. Potter masterminded the Seagulls to fourth in the top-flight, with four wins from six games this season. But he has now joined Chelsea along with five of his backroom staff, after Thomas Tuchel’s sacking earlier this week. That means both Cherries and Brighton are set to be without a manager for the clash at Vitality Stadium. Under-21 boss Andrew Crofts is set to take charge against Cherries. Quizzed on preparations for the Seagulls, interim Cherries head coach O’Neil said: “Personally, when I watch games and think about how I am going to prepare our team for it, I look at every aspect. “I try to spot everything I can, in possession, out of possession, where they are strong, not so strong. I don’t know what effect Graham Potter leaving will have on the group. “I’d expect them to be extremely professional around it, arrive here and try to put on a good display. “I don’t think him leaving gives us any advantage. I think it’s the same game that it would have been.” He added: “We focus purely on the team. “Brighton are a fantastic team, had a great start to the season, play good football and have a real, clear identity. I don’t see that changing for Saturday. “I think they will look very similar to how I have seen them looking to every other game I have watched them in. “We will be well-prepared for what they bring. I feel like the boys are in a good place and I am looking forward to seeing where we can get the group to again.” Brighton secured a 5-2 victory over Leicester City last time out. “They are a good side, they want to control the game with the ball, they have threats all over the pitch,” said O’Neil. “They have scored a lot of goals already of course this season. I have watched all their games and we will be ready, I’m sure.”

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhuttl ‘congratulates’ Chelsea on Graham Potter manager decision #SAINTSFC #ChelseaFC

RALPH Hasenhuttl has congratulated Chelsea on “a very good choice” with expected new manager Graham Potter, after close acquaintance Thomas Tuchel was sacked. The Austrian admitted the Blues’ decision is another reminder of the brutal nature of management at the top level. Tuchel had been relieved of his duties just six matches into the Premier League season, and was not even the first to go after AFC Bournemouth’s Scott Parker decision. However, Hasenhuttl was full of praise for Potter – who has been in charge of Brighton & Hove Albion since 2019. “In football, things sometimes change very quickly. What everybody has seen is what a fantastic manager Tuchel is and what a job he has done there,” Hasenhuttl said. “I can remember him coming in and immediately he had a big impact with his group. He changed immediately the whole behaviour of the club, playing good football and winning the Champions League. “Then if somebody else decides you get more out of this group than you do, then change is happening in this business. “We all know this when we sign a contract somewhere, you know in some moments the next one is right out your door waiting for your job.” On the impending incoming of Potter, Hasenhuttl added: “I must congratulate them on a very good choice, he is for me the manager in the past two seasons that has had the biggest impact on a club. “With all the limits they have and the transfers they gave away to other clubs, to still compete on the highest level shows how good this group was. “I know Pascal Gross who plays there and we speak often about the development of this club, he does a good job and has all the knowledge to step into a top club.” He added: “It is a clear signal that there are also good English managers out there, and he was also working in foreign countries to get experience. He was looking for other options to learn and develop his knowledge, and this is a very good way of doing it.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- Brighton’s Graham Potter wants attacking options within team including Danny Welbeck and not a central striker #BHAFC

But they were unwilling to go for someone who did not fit the bill in all aspects. The Seagulls go into the next 13 games with Danny Welbeck their one specialist centre-forward with Premier League experience. They have strikers in Deniz Undav and teenager Even Ferguson as well as several attacking players. Graham Potter is aware the talk about him needing another striker resurfaced in the later stages of the summer window. Just to make sure, he was reminded at his press conference yesterday staged in the build-up to the Leicester game. He has gone on the record saying that one type of player he might like to add would be a frontman with similar profile to Welbeck. Asked whether Albion had looked for one, he replied: “We looked, we were aware of the options but at the same time everything needs to align and it has to be right for the club. “Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t. “But we have different options, different variety. “Danny’s in a really good place, probably as well as he’s played with us, so I’m excited for him. “The window is the window, you can have ideas but you have to do the right thing for the club and sometimes doing nothing is the right thing as well.” Potter is confident his side have enough goals in them to score one more than the opponent, providing they get things right at the back as well. Pascal Gross has netted three times so far and had a couple more good chances. Solly March has not been short of opportunities while Leandro Trossard is already off the mark. The side have also forced two penalties, both put away by Alexis Mac Allister. Potter’s confirmation that Albion looked for a striker showed he is fully aware of areas where the group can be improved. But he said: “Rather than wait for that 20-goal striker to come along, it’s probably better that the team does better and attacks better, creates more chances and other players from other areas of the pitch score because that’s something we can control. “Alexis has chipped in, Pascal has chipped in, we’ve got others who can do that as well. “Solly’s been really close, Leo can score. “So we’ve got options and we’ve got players that can do that, it’s just a case of keep working with the boys.” He added: “I like the group, I like the team. “Good togetherness and good competition, good options and good variety. “We have to keep working now. “I won’t be the first manager to say I’m happy the window is shut, I’m sure. “But thankfully 13 games and then it’s open again so I don’t have to wait long, do I?” That last bit was said with a laugh but the belief in his squad is very serious. Undav needs to play a big part in that, not least since Neal Maupay left. The German got off the mark with a calm finish in the Carabao Cup win at Forest Green. He faces the challenge of getting up to the physical, mental and technical demands of the Prem and little has been seen of him so far. But we have seen he get into decent areas, even if he was clearly offside when he hit the post in the defeat by Fulham in midweek. Still, it is very early days and his chance is likely to come. Potter said: “He’s a different profile to Danny, different attributes. “We’re getting to know him and him us. “He probably has to be a little bit patient at the moment but that’s to be expected because the team is doing well. “Apart from the other night, we’ve been on a good run. “But we understand his quality and there will come a time when we need those qualities and that’s when he needs to show he’s ready, and he will be. “He’s fighting every day and we’re happy with him.” Potter said it was never a temptation to spend money in the transfer window as big fees rolled in. A player would only be brought in if he – and all elements of the deal – were just right. It is clear Albion do not necessarily disagree with those calling for another striker to be signed. But they remain more positive about what they already have than some observers appear to be. Potter said: “I like the group, I like the different qualities we have, the different personalities we have. “People make assessments now but really the proof is in the pudding, to be honest. “People ask how good your window has been, how much money you’ve spent or so-called names you bring in, but actually it’s about whether they help the team function better and we won’t know that until nine months’ time. “In terms of how I would assess the group, it is more about how it functions together, how the personalities are mixing together, how training is every day – and the initial signs are really positive. “Now it’s a case of work. The window’s shut for that long period of 13 matches and then we look forward to the next round of transfer questions!”
Jack Stephens

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jack Stephens speaks after loan move from Southampton #AFCB #SAINTSFC

LATEST Cherries recruit Jack Stephens detailed how his move across the south coast was a “little bit out of the blue”, before sharing how “it felt like the right time for a fresh challenge.” 28-year-old Stephens has swapped Hampshire for Dorset on deadline day, in a move that was seemingly completed in a short turnaround. The centre-back was spotted watching Cherries’ clash with Wolves at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday night, just hours after initial reports of a move came out. Speaking about the whirlwind final days of the window, Stephens told Cherries’ website: “It was a little bit out of the blue. “Got a phone call yesterday and obviously I was really keen to make it happen and it was all done in a few hours and luckily I was able to get it done. “I was really impressed (watching the Wolves game). “It's a good point coming off from a disappointing defeat. It's great to see that the lads haven't sat on that result. “They've looked to bounce back as quickly as possible and I thought they did that last night with a really good point.” Stephens is more than aware of what it takes to survive in the Premier League, after having played 122 games in the top-flight for perennial relegation battlers Saints. “I've played some games at this level and I've been around it for quite a few years,” he added. “So I'm just hoping that I'm able to offer as much experience as possible. “But for myself, I just want to try and get in the team, play as many games as I can and help the team and the club, stay in the division and push up the league. “Obviously, I haven't been out for a while, I haven't changed club for a while, so it felt like the right time for a fresh challenge and one that I'm really looking forward to. “So, like I said, I want to play as many games as I can and help the team and the club push up the division and hopefully have a successful season.” Stephens’ move was sorted in time to allow the centre-back to train with the first-team this morning. “I knew two or three of them before I came. Obviously I didn't get a chance to speak to them before it happened because it happened quite quickly. “But yeah, I've met all the lads this morning and they've all been very welcoming and I'm looking forward to working with them. “(Training was) really enjoyable. I was quite anxious to get involved and wasn't sure if we were able to get out and train this morning, but luckily I was able to get involved and it's nice to get that first one out of the way and focus on the task ahead.” Cherries have frequently switched between a three-man and two-man central defence over the first five games of the season, with Stephens comfortable in either shape thanks to his education at Saints. He mentioned: “Something that I'm quite used to over the last couple of years. “I've played in teams that played back five and back four, so yeah, I feel comfortable in either formation and whatever the manager wants me to do, I'm happy to do that.
Ralph Hasenhuttl

#PLStories- Ralph Hasenhutt confirms deadline day signing of defender Duje Caleta-Car for Southampton #SAINTSFC

SAINTS have confirmed the signing of impressive Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car on a four-year deal, ahead of the summer transfer window closing today. The experienced 25-year-old centre-back Caleta-Car has played over 100 times in France’s top division and has almost 50 matches of experience across UEFA’s European competitions, including the Champions League. Caleta-Car had previously been linked to the likes of Liverpool and was said to have a deadline day move fall at the final hurdle last year. The former Red Bull Salzburg star was also part of Croatia’s squad that reached the World Cup final in 2018, and was said to have travelled to England today. After signing, Caleta-Car said: “It was really a crazy day. I’m very excited because I spoke with the coach, I think he is a good coach and of course the team – I watched them against Chelsea and in the games before. “I know the way they play, they have a lot of young players, so I think I can come good in the group and be with them every day, to progress with them together.” Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl added: “Duje is already a very established and experienced player, who has done an impressive job at his previous clubs. “He is a big presence on the pitch and he will bring even more quality into our centre-back group. It is important we have good depth and options in this position, and he gives us another very strong one.” A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Jurgen Klopp Liverpool

#PLStories- Jurgen Klopp believes Parker did ‘outstanding job’ at Cherries and outlines his transfer strategy #LFC #AFCB

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp said Scott Parker was doing an “outstanding job” at Cherries and insisted: “In a club like Bournemouth, you need backing from everybody.” The Merseyside manager, a winner of the Champions League and Premier League at Anfield, saw his side dish out a 9-0 hammering to Parker’s side on Saturday. The result equalled the Premier League record for biggest margin of victory, as well as the joint-highest defeat for Cherries as a club. Prior to the game, Klopp described Cherries as a “proper team” for the way they earned Championship promotion last season, as well as outlining his respect for the Dorset outfit in his programme notes. Klopp was also seen comforting Parker on the touchline during the record-equalling result – a gesture which was described as a “touch of class” by former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas on Match of The Day. Parker admitted to the Daily Echo the defeat had been the toughest day of his career in football, as either a player or coach. Asked by the Daily Echo whether he felt sympathy for Parker, and whether he had spoken to him after the game, Klopp replied: “We spoke, of course, but not about that. He didn’t moan or whatever about the situation. “But when you look at the other two teams who went up (Fulham and Nottingham Forest) and you look what they spend. “Then you look at Bournemouth and you think, okay… What will happen there? It’s not about the squad is not strong enough or whatever, not at all. It’s just the league is a really tough one. “Especially I think in a club like Bournemouth, you need backing from everybody, because it will be difficult. “It’s clear in the moment when you have the promotion – then it’s already clear, the problems start now.” Parker joined Cherries after leaving Fulham in June 2021, signing a three-year contract at Vitality Stadium. He guided Cherries to the Premier League last season, finishing second behind Fulham in the Championship table. “I think he is doing an incredible, absolutely outstanding job arriving there and getting promoted immediately in a league where Fulham is flying away, Nottingham Forest were flying – that was a big one,” continued Klopp. “Yes, I have a lot of sympathy for him.” Cherries’ next top-flight test comes against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Vitality Stadium on Wednesday (7.30pm).
Thomas Tuchel

#PLStories- Chelsea’s Tuchel reserves special praise for Hasenhuttl and admits N’Golo Kante’s injury record #CHELSEAFC #SaintsFC

CHELSEA manager Thomas Tuchel insisted “I have a lot of respect” for Ralph Hasenhuttl, stating Saints teams have “his fingerprints are all over” them. The German boss faced Hasenhuttl three times alone last season with an EFL Cup tie in October, the Blues eventually running out winners in all three meetings. As did Hasenhuttl, Tuchel arrived in the Premier League from the Bundesliga – where he was the boss of giants Borussia Dortmund. Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s visit to St Mary’s, Champions League-winner Tuchel reserved some kind words for his Saints counterpart. "I have a lot of respect for Ralph, and we have played against each other a lot of times,” Tuchel said. “He is a very nice person and a very good coach, and his fingerprints are all over this Southampton team every year. "He will be very friendly before the match, but during the match, he will not be friendly with us. “Don't make the mistake, he is a competitor as we are. We will fight it out but always with fair play. It will be better to be on the sideline than in the stands." Tuchel had been serving a touchline ban after he was sent off during the recent ‘Battle of the Bridge’ – the fiery meeting with Tottenham Hotspur. In the meantime, he has been taking in the performances of Saints as part of his preparations. "I had the chance to watch the game of Southampton (against Manchester United) live and saw a very strong side,” Tuchel added. “They had a huge turnaround at Leicester to win the game, and you could see they gained a lot of confidence from it. “They conceded, but they had a lot of touches in the box, a lot of shots against Manchester United and were very mobile upfront. "What you can always expect in Southampton is a physical game, a running game, a high-intensity game. This is what it is. We need to recover well and be well prepared to repeat what we did last season." A message from the Editor Thank you for reading this article - we appreciate your support in reading the Daily Echo. Graham Potter Brighton

#PLStories- Graham Potter praises Moises Caicedo and talks Neal Maupay exit after narrow win #BHAFC

Graham Potter has laughed off talk of a £42 million bid for Moises Caicedo and said: That might get his boots. Albion are “calm and confident” about keeping the Ecuador midfielder on board. Caicedo is likely to be linked with other Premier League clubs going into the final hours of the transfer window. But it appears near certain he will be staying with the Seagulls. His focus will be on helping chase a win at Fulham this evening which would take them top of the Premier League. Potter said: “It doesn’t surprise me that people are looking at him because he is playing at a fantastic level. “As soon as you do research on him you realise he is a top kid, great person, young, playing in the Premier League, has all the attributes to play at the very, very highest level.” “But we know the position he is in and we know the position the club are in, which is why we don’t want to lose him. “We don’t think we will, but in football you never know. That is how it is, but we are quite calm and confident.” Asked about speculation of a £42 million Liverpool offer, Potter said with a laugh: “I think you’d probably get his boots for that, maybe, knowing the chairman! “It’s not for me to talk about. It is what it is.”
Scott Parker Fulham

#PLStories- Scott Parker on Anfield ‘challenge’, transfers and Nat Phillips #AFCB #LFC

BOSS Scott Parker’s message to his squad ahead of Cherries’ trip to Anfield is clear – to ‘try and challenge’ Liverpool, rather than find the experience ‘daunting’. Parker will travel to Merseyside as the last manager to record a Premier League win away at Liverpool, with his Fulham side the last team to beat Jurgen Klopp’s Reds at Anfield back in March 2021, a 1-0 victory. Liverpool are yet to record a win this season, with Klopp’s charges tasting defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United on Monday. Their first home game of the campaign ended in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, with the away side opening scores. Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Parker shared: “These are the games that certainly when I was as a player and even now, sitting here as a coach, these are ones you thrive off, really. “You're going up in boxing terms, pound for pound. “They’re elite in everything they do. And you need to adopt an attitude, which is you want to go and try and challenge that. “You want to relish that opportunity and try and get the better of that, rather than the opposite, really. And I think that's probably the main message. “That was certainly the main message before when I’ve been to Anfield, certainly the way I thought about playing against these big players in these big teams. “It was one I embraced and one that I look forward to, really. So, yeah, I need to give that message to the team, really. "And these players, which is very new to some of them, the Premier League, Anfield, Man City away. “These are all big challenges, but ones they need to embrace and look forward to. “The other option is you find it very daunting, you find it very difficult. "And that's the polar opposite to what I want, really. So, yeah, we need to (It’s cliché), but we need to enjoy it. Of course we do. “We need to enjoy it in a real positive way. We need to establish ourselves. We need to show our qualities, for sure. “And while they may be limited and while they may be very difficult, is certainly something we need to embrace in that sense.”
Jaidon Anthony

#PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on making his Premier League debut and leaving Arsenal #AFCB #ArsenalFC

STARLET Jaidon Anthony labelled his Premier League debut as a “special day” even if Cherries’ 3-0 defeat to Arsenal was “disappointing”. Two first half goals from Martin Odegaard effectively decided the result 10 minutes into the game, leaving Cherries head coach Scott Parker to switch tactics at half-time. The winger was introduced as a half-time substitute for Marcos Senesi, seeing Cherries move from a 3-5-1-1 to a 4-3-3, with Anthony deployed on the left-wing. READ MORE: William Saliba added a third shortly before the hour mark, but Cherries were notably improved in the second period. Reflecting on his first taste of Premier League football, Anthony told the Daily Echo: “It was disappointing, the first half, for the team. “They punished us very quickly and we didn't really get near them too much. “So, we just wanted to try and make an impact in the second half, and get around them and I thought we'd done a bit better. “Obviously disappointing result, but a special day. “We didn't really get too close to them in the first half and the manager just wanted to try and get near them, get around them and I think the new formation definitely helped. “It was a disappointing day overall. We'll learn from that, for sure.” Released by Arsenal as a youngster, Anthony was playing non-league football with Weymouth just over two years ago. Despite his meteoric rise and breakthrough into Cherries’ first team and promotion to the Premier League, the Hackney-born winger is remaining level headed. When asked how he was feeling after becoming a Premier League player, he shared “I guess the same old Jaidon! “Obviously a special day and one I dreamed of for a long time. “I just want to get my head down and hopefully have a big impact this season, and get some more game time.”
