#PLStories- Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate reveals dressing room high spirits despite recent losses #BHAFC

ALBION midfielder Steven Alzate is confident the team can beat their record points tally in the Premier League this season. The most amount of points Albion have collected in the Premier League is 41, which was achieved in Graham Potter's first two seasons in charge of the club. So far this season Albion have collected 33 points and have 11 games remaining in the campaign in order to beat their record. This should be achieved as the club has averaged 1.23 points per match in the Premier League with Potter in charge, so they should end the season with 47 points. Alzate is confident that the club can achieve this aim. Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate was the club's best player against Newcastle according to Graham Potter The 23-told the club website: "When it's not going your way in football, it feels like nothing will fall for you. "We've got a good group and despite a few losses we've still got high spirits in the dressing room. "Every team will have a tough period and we're going through ours now, so we need to stay strong and keep believing. "We will start getting points again soon. "Every season you want to demonstrate progress and we showed some of our best form at the start of the season – we need to rediscover that. "Before the season people outside the club said we should be happy with staying in the league, then after five games they thought we'd be challenging for Europe. We're confident we can beat that points tally of 41 with 11 games still to play." The midfielder was hailed by Potter for his performance against Newcastle and now Alzate is keen for more action. He said: "I feel like whenever I get an opportunity I take it but I can only do my bit and perform. "It's the manager's call whether or not I'm in the team but I was happy to hear those words on Saturday."

#PLStories- Graham Potter reveals hard work is only way to improve Brighton’s poor form #BHAFC

ALBION boss Graham Potter knows that he and his side will have to work hard to turn around the current poor form the club is going through. Defeat to Newcastle was the fourth in a row in the Premier League, although performances have been slightly improving. The boss, despite having the same last name as fictional wizard Harry Potter, knows that there is not a magical quick fix. Potter has even suggested that despite the defeat to Burnley the levels shown by his players is not far off what was proving successful at the start of the season. Potter said: “Hard work, that’s what it is. Although my name is Potter, there’s no magic wand. You just have to work hard.  “The players’ effort was there, they gave everything and were disappointed because we were nearly there in the first half, but that’s not enough at this level. “You’ve got to be honest always, which is what we always try to be. “In terms of our performance there are always positives there but there are also things you can do better. “That’s how we’ve always acted with the guys and apart from Burnley recently, the performances haven’t been too far away.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter reveals goals of Brighton club and realistic ambitions for them #BHAFC

It's a balancing act “teams like Brighton” face every season. (Apologies for use of a now somewhat weary phrase but you know what I mean). In fact, it probably applies to about two-thirds of the top-flight these days. That balance between being ambitious and cautious. Between trying to reach for glory or just avoid the quicksand. The desire to push forward and progress to where you want to be while remembering exactly where you have come from and how hard it was. The need to make bold but necessary changes at times while being reminded from a distance to be “careful what you wish for”. That balance is always there – but Albion were perhaps given a reminder at the weekend as they lost 3-0 to Burnley. That was a humbling experience in many ways but also underlined how well Albion have done so far and how high standards have to be. And it was a reminder of that double-edged objective of which Graham Potter was reminded in the run-up to the game. Albion can very reasonably target their best-ever season as they remain ninth in the top flight. The best-ever dates back 40 years to 13th place in the old First Division. It seems they are on course but Saturday’s experience underlines how hard you have to keep pedalling to move forward – and what happens if standards drop. Almost five years on from Albion’s promotion, Potter was asked last week about when the time comes to look further forward. Or is Prem life always a matter of survival, then take it from there? He replied: “My instinct would be to say you have to do both. “You have to understand the strength of the Premier League and know that if you have a few things go against you – injuries, or especially with Covid, the challenges we have had - you can miss players for a number of games and things can start to go against you. “The priority and the focus and the respect should be towards staying in the Premier League. “But, as I’ve always said, I think you need to be ambitious as well. “Supporters want to come to the game believing they can win. “I think that is what we try to do here. “Then you have to take all the decisions along the way in terms of developing your club, in terms of short-term, long-term, medium-term. “Do you accept a bid, for example, for Ben White? “You see the playing style develop in young players, which means you can increase the value of your club so it puts you in a position where you have got more resources to compete in what is financially a very competitive situation. “So respect to the competition to say you need to stay in the competition. “But then ambition and strategy to try to punch above your weight. “Because that’s ultimately what we are trying to do.” All of which, of course, underlines why Tony Bloom made a bold statement just ahead of Potter’s first Premier League match in charge, back in August 2019. He told a fans forum at the Amex that Albion’s long-term goal was to become a top-ten club. Not one tenth-placed finish for the first team but more of an all-club aim to establish themselves among the best on an ongoing basis. Top ten. Those words again. Back in the summer of 2010, Gus Poyet was asked his target for a strong squad which looked potential promotion material in League One and replied: “Top ten.” MARC CUCURELLA HAILED AS PERFECT BRIGHTON SIGNING When they won the title with four games to spare, he was picked up on that by a reporter. “You said your aim was only to finish top ten,” it was pointed out with a bit of a smirk. “We did!” Poyet replied. In Bloom’s case, it is likely “top ten” did indeed mean tenth or ninth – around there. It was a goal which has proved easy to misquote and misinterpret. To almost use against Albion in tougher times – as the “Premier League ready” theme was on occasion. Albion did not start that season with Bloom demanding tenth place. What they were trying to do was avoid that “what now?” moment which seems to hit clubs who have come through the ranks. When does it stop being fun if you reach a ceiling? Albion have given themselves something to strive for and the hope is fans find it as engaging as a push for promotion or survival fight in the first Prem season. Forty years ago, Albion and Saturday’s opponents Aston Villa were heading for the high point in their respective histories. For the Seagulls, mid-table in the top division. For Villa, champions of Europe. The goal for the Seagulls remains to better that placing – then do it again. It won’t lead to them hiring an open top bus but older fans will fully appreciate what it would mean. One hopes everyone of all ages would. In a back-handed way, the jolt of Saturday has shown how heady the current heights of ninth place really are.

#PLStories- Brighton boss Graham Potter believes Burnley are competitive despite being in relegation zone #BurnleyFC #BHAFC

BRIGHTON boss Graham Potter has praised Sean Dyche ahead of Saturdays’ clash with Burnley at the Amex Stadium. Dyche’s men sit at the foot of the Premier League table, having won just one league match all season. But Potter insists the margins are fine in the top-flight and called Dyche “a vastly experienced manager”. “This league is so competitive, so difficult, and you only need a few things to go wrong and the margins go the opposite way and you can find yourself in trouble,” he told the club’s YouTube channel. “But he’s a vastly experienced manager who organises the team really well. They play to their strengths and have a fantastic attitude to play football. “They stick together, they’re a compact team, everybody knows what they’re doing and they’re effective in what they do.” Potter’s men sit ninth in the table, having lost just five of their 24 league matches since the start of the season. The Seagulls came from behind to record a 2-1 victory when the sides met at Turf Moor on the opening day. But the Brighton chief insists they aren’t underestimating the Clarets and expects a tough test this weekend. He added: “Burnley are very, very competitive. They’ve drawn a lot of games and the performances have been good, so they’ll be looking to turn those margins their way. “We’re expecting a tough game but we’re excited and looking forward to it.” Brighton captain Lewis Dunk misses out through suspension, while Enock Mwepu and Jeremy Sarmiento remain sidelined by injury. #PLStories- Graham Potter thinks Lewis Dunk was incorrectly red carded against Manchester United #BHAFC #MUFC

Graham Potter has backed Lewis Dunk over his red card at Old Trafford. Referee Peter Bankes initially showed yellow before being directed to the pitchside monitor. Albion head coach Potter said: “It was a yellow card live. “Adam Webster was around on the cover. “It’s not clear and obvious that he can’t get there so I don’t understand the intervention. “I don’t know what the stats are but, when the referee goes over to the monitor, it seems it’s only going to go one way.” United made strong representations to Bankes when Dunk was shown yellow – to the extent that Bruno Fernandes was booked. GRAHAM POTTER VERDICT AS BRIGHTON LOSE TO MANCHESTER UNITED Potter was asked by a reporter based in the North West whether the home team were over-zealous in their arguments. #PLStories- Graham Potter praises Brighton for a fighting win against Watford #BHAFC #WatfordFC

Graham Potter praised a “really, really good performance” as his Albion side won 2-0 at Watford. Neal Maupay scored a beauty right on half-time and Adam Webster joyfully crashed home a late second from a corner. Albion boss Potter said: “I thought we played a really good game, reacted really well throughout the game. “Good reactions when we lost the ball, good patience when we had the ball. “We tried to attack, which is not easy against Roy’s teams because they defend well. “You have got to be patient and wait for the opportunity to attack. We did that well.” WATFORD 0 BRIGHTON 2 - OUR LIVE REPORT FROM VICARAGE ROAD Albion had a testing start to the second half as Emmanuel Dennis hit the bar. But they regained control thanks largely to a shrewd double change by Potter as he sent on Yves Bissouma and Alexis Mac Allister. Potter said: “They were probably disappointed with their first half and changed to a 4-3-3 in the second half. “There was a little bit of an adjustment period there and I think that was the time when we didn’t have the same control. “But I think our subs helped us and we wrestled it back and then finished the game strongly. “Credit to the players.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter expects injured Albion star Enock Mwepu back shortly #BHAFC

Enock Mwepu's return from injury remains on hold. It is five weeks now since the Zambia captain limped out of FA Cup action at West Brom holding the back of his right thigh. Albion boss Graham Potter said: “We were half-expecting to get him back this week but he had a little bit of a setback - or sideways move. “I’m expecting next week he should be there. “It was not quite a tweak but it was not really serious. #PLStories- Graham Potter hails Leandro Trossard as ‘unique’ talent for Brighton #BHAFC

Leandro Trossard has been told he can add something extra for Albion on his return to action. But the Belgium international should still be targeting more goals and assists, according to his head coach. Trossard is available to face Watford tomorrow after a positive Covid test ruled him out of the FA Cup exit at Tottenham. He was left on the bench last time Albion went to Vicarage Road, for a 3-0 win in Potter’s first game in charge at the start of the 2019-20 season. But he has become a firm favourite since then. Potter said: “He has grown over his time at the club. “I always say players are unique but he is because we don’t have a player with the same attributes as he does. “He can play as an extra midfielder who links up with the attack, to get in behind and score goals. “His goal against Brentford for example, that’s a really good example of him attacking the backline and finishing. “That’s what he has done and he has improved. “But I think there’s more to come from him in terms of adding goals and assists. “At the same time, he can play the game that helps the team build attacks and get into the final third, to create chances as a collective.” Alexis Mac Allister was also sidelined by positive Covid tests but he too is now available.

#PLStories- Graham Potter gives his reaction on technical director Dan Ashworth exit #BHAFC

Graham Potter says Dan Ashworth faced “a really tough decision” before leaving Albion. But he has backed the club to continue to progress despite his departure. Ashworth handed in his resignation as technical director this week. He is expected to take up a similar role at Newcastle United. Ashworth has been at the club for almost three years and was involved in Potter’s arrival as head coach in 2019. Potter said today: “Of course (I am) disappointed because Dan was a colleague, he was a friend, he was someone I respected a lot. Of course I still respect him. EVAN FERGUSON ON TARGET IN FA YOUTH CUP WIN “He has been an important person at the football club but these things happen. It’s life. “We are at a really well run football club, which doesn’t rely on one person, as important as they are. “We move forward as a club together and we take on the challenge of life without Dan as best we can.” David Weir has stepped in as acting technical director. Potter added: “As you can imagine I had lots of calls with Dan, lots of conversations with him. “I understood his situation. “I think it was a really tough decision for him. “He has got his family, he has got his reasons. “Then you have to respect Dan is a grown man, he is a very intelligent man. “He understands what he has got here. “At the same time he has got another opportunity so you have to respect that in life. “I respect Dan, I respect what he has done for the club, I respect his decision. “But I know this club does not rely on one person. “It’s a real collective strength that we have and that’s what I think will take us through. “I’m looking forward to working with David Weir and we will go from there."

#PLStories- Graham Potter praises Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk for performance against Tottenham after injury #BHAFC

Lewis Dunk is poised for his Premier League return – helped by a big FA Cup test. Head coach Graham Potter has praised his skipper’s efforts in the 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. He now targets Saturday’s trip to Watford as Potter returns to the scene of his first game in charge of the Seagulls. Dunk missed nine games with a knee injury before being thrown in against Spurs’ array of dangerous attackers. Potter said: “I thought he was really, really good considering the time he has had out. “So brave, full of spirit, full of quality. “A bit of rustiness as you can imagine after a couple of months and playing at the level. “Son and Kane and Moura are as good as you get in terms of attacking the spaces. “A tough night for him but I thought he coped with it really well.” Dunk was named BBC’s man of the match when Potter opened his Albion tenure with a 3-0 win at Vicarage Road on the first day of the 2019-20 season. Current squad members Pascal Gross, Solly March and Shane Duffy all started that day and Neal Maupay scored on his debut off the bench. Potter’s first starting XI also included the now departed Maty Ryan, Martin Montoya, Dan Burn, Davy Propper, Dale Stephens, Jurgen Locadia and Glenn Murray. He sent on Florin Andone, who scored, and Bernardo as subs.

#PLStories- Graham Potter does not blame player mentality but a rare off color performance against Spurs #BHAFC

The question to Graham Potter was well-intended but could have been more carefully worded. Albion had just been well beaten by Tottenham in the first of three meetings between the clubs in this second half of the season. Potter had come up against Antonio Conte for the first time and the Italian had seen his plan work well. His Tottenham side were solid, compact and patient without the ball, rapier-like on counter raids and with high quality personnel to carry the job out. Albion were knocked out of their stride and were second best in the first half. That was a shock to the system for those who have followed them on their travels this season. No doubt Potter will look at this tie and come up with ideas for the two league games. The question I asked was whether he would learn from a tough Saturday night ahead of the two remaining meetings. Of course he will. Potter replied: “Every game that’s what you have to do, you have to learn. “We will learn from it and hopefully do better in the next game. “We prepare for Watford now.” What I should have asked was WHAT would Albion learn. Conte set a test which Albion did not handle well, certainly initially. The period in which they struggled lasted longer than at, for example, Anfield and Stamford Bridge. Potter said: “I thought defensively there were a couple of things. “I also thought we turned the ball over a little bit too cheaply for what we normally do. “Sometimes those things can happen. “The attitude of the boys and the personality was great. “Their intention was really good. “Sometimes it’s not your night, you don’t quite hit the levels you need to and also there’s another team on the pitch we have to credit as well.” Harry Kane’s double and a freak own goal off Solly March did the damage. There were mistakes by Albion in the run-up to the first goal. They wasted at least a couple of presentable goalscoring chances too – but so did Spurs. Albion will need to be more precise playing out from the back when points are at stake against Spurs. Robert Sanchez had just got away with a poor pass, which took Kane by surprise, when the Seagulls went behind. Adam Webster quickly saw routes forward closed down when he received the ball from his keeper. He stumbled as he tried to bring the ball out, Son Heung-min took it away from him and Kane eventually curled unerringly around Lewis Dunk and inside the far post. Goal No.2 came on one of those counter raids with Albion having been lured well forward. It looked like March had tracked back sufficiently well but the intended cross by Emerson Royal took a nick off his shin and spiralled crazily into the one spot Sanchez could not reach Spurs were a threat every time they sprung from deep. There were more scrapes in front of the Albion goal and for a while it seemed the best they could aim for was to reach the interval 2-0 down and just about in the contest. In fact, they might have thrown themselves a lifeline before their half-time rendezvous with their unhappy head coach. Yves Bissouma was heavily involved in a move which led to Neal Maupay slashing a shot wildly off target on the turn. That was just an appetiser for the way Bissouma would look to drag his side back into the tie after the break. Refusing to be shaken off the ball and driving forward from midfield, Bissouma was the heartbeat of an improvement which gave 5,700 away fans something to warm to. He saw one deflected shot produce a fine save from Hugo Lloris before another got Albion back in the contest. There was good fortune as the ball span in off Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, of course. But the way he got to a loose ball first, maintained possession, went left then right and created shooting space summed up that second-half display on his return from Afcon action. Game on – for all of two minutes. Albion may well look at failings defensively as Spurs restored their two-goal buffer. But one must also give huge credit to the way Son drove at the heart of their defence, especially Webster. Dunk went across and got a foot in but that only diverted the ball against Webster and goalwards before Kane slid in to add the final touch. Even then Albion should have got back in the game had Maupay shown more conviction when sent clean through by Webster. His attempted chip of a keeper who was not going down gave Lloris an easy gather - and Jakub Moder reason to complain that the Frenchman had not passed. That said, Moder himself was off target with a couple of efforts from around the edge of the box as Albion failed to make the most of possession. They have plenty to work on but evidence of the season so far suggests they will do exactly that. The midfielder scored and shone as the Seagulls went out of the FA Cup. Bissouma was subject of transfer interest last month and Graham Potter is only too aware that will increase in the summer. He is ready for it – and looking forward to seeing what Bissouma can produce before then. Albion’s head coach said: “I’ve spoken about this quite often, especially in transfer windows, because there is always speculation about good players and you have to deal with that. “As a club we are quite strong. “We don’t have to sell anybody but we also know it helps improve and develop a club. #PLStories- Graham Potter’s latest on Deniz Undav and Danny Welbeck #BHAFC

Graham Potter is looking forward to working with Deniz Undav. But he has warned the prolific German goal-getter should not be seen as the fabled “silver bullet” at Premier League level. Undav signed for Albion for around £7 million on deadline day but will remain on loan at Union St Gilloise for the rest of the season. He has an impressive goal-scoring track record and Albion will hope they have unearthed a bargain as he joins them for pre-season. Potter said: “He has had a really interesting career. “He has had to fight a lot to get where he is now and that shows a lot about his character. “He’s doing well in Belgium and he brings qualities which can be used in our group. “He’s a goalscorer who makes players better around him. “I’m not saying he’s a silver bullet, the answer to any problems but he wants to help the team. “He will have to adapt to the Premier League but it’s exciting.” Undav’s arrival will have no bearing on any decision as to whether Danny Welbeck stays. The former England man is out of contract his summer as things stand. But he is known to be relishing his football at the Amex and has three important goals in limited minutes this term - one winner and two late equalisers, all with headers. #PLStories- Bjorn Hamberg reveals how absent Graham Potter helped Brighton during the match #BHAFC

This is how the technical area looked for Albion yesterday as they picked up an away draw. Bjorn Hamberg took charge of the team at Leicester City. Head coach Graham Potter was ruled out after testing positive for Covid. His assistant Billy Reid, who was due to step in, himself tested positive on Saturday. Hamberg was assisted by Bruno while Potter supervised from home. Under-23s coach Andrew Crofts joined the analysis team at the King Power. Hamberg told The Argus: “Graham had a direct feed from the game to his house. “He felt well enough to be a part of it and obviously it was really good for us. “He was always in touch with a couple of the coaches here, not myself. “Anything Graham wanted changed, anything Graham thought, I had that information in ten seconds. “He wasn’t here but be played his part and you know what he’s like, he’s a top manager. I thought it worked well. “We had a great support staff around so it worked smoothly, no problem.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter assistant Billy Reid reveals Brighton were cautious about hurt Leicester City team #BHAFC #LCFC

And his strong partnership with head coach Graham Potter is a good reason for that confidence. The 58-year-old Glaswegian will take charge against Leicester at the King Power with Potter isolating at home. The two men will be in close contact ahead of and during the game. They were due to talk tactics and selection last night. But they will have a good idea anyway of what each other are thinking after working together down the years in Sweden and the Championship before arriving at Albion getting on for three years ago. Reid said: “Graham was Ostersunds manager for a couple of years when he called me. “Graeme Jones, who is on the coaching staff at Newcastle, put the two of us together. “I wasn’t sure about going to Sweden at my age, if I’m honest, but I was really impressed when I met Graham. “I knew from my first impression that he was a real thinker about football and a guy who was a cut above the level he was working at then, which was second tier in Sweden. “His man management is fantastic and it has been a privilege to work with him and a real learning curve for me personally. “I feel comfortable with Graham. He involves me in everything. “I was manager at Hamilton for eight years, so I know what to expect but obviously the Premier League is a step up. “We’ll try and keep things as normal as possible and prepare for a tough game at Leicester on Sunday. “I think we are all different characters, that is for sure. Bjorn (Hamberg) has been part of the team since I have been here and I think he has worked with Graham for going on nine years. “He is one of the coaches, one of the analysts, and he feeds us in everything we do. “Bjorn does the defensive stuff. He concentrates on that, by in large. But he also gets involved in team intentions, like myself and Graham.” Potter and Reid saw their side draw with Chelsea on Tuesday and were in the East Midlands 24 hours later. It appeared they were witnessing a 2-1 win for Leicester, albeit against the run of play, until Tottenham scored twice deep in added time. That cave-in was not necessarily good news for Albion. Reid said: “We were at the Spurs game on Wednesday when it looked as if they were going to win, then they lost it in the last 30 seconds. “But that will make them more ready for us. “I’m sure Leicester will be hurting. “They have a lot of injuries and players on international duty but they will be dangerous. “Brendan Rodgers’ teams are always organised and they are a top-eight team. We will have to be at our best. “I know Brendan and his assistant Chris Davies from their time at Celtic when he won everything. “Since he went into Leicester he’s made a big impression. “We’re going up against some top coaches, make no mistake about that. “They are capable of scoring goals. “They are probably leaking more goals at the moment but whoever plays, they will still have a strong squad available.” Tottenham’s comeback left them unbeaten in their last six Prem games, one more than Albion. But the Seagulls are happy enough with their recent run. Still, three draws out of five – and 11 now for the season - mean there is always room for improvement. BRIGHTON BOSS PLEASED TO SEE YVES BISSOUMA BACK ON BIG STAGE Reid said: “We make ourselves hard to beat first and foremost but we believe our performance levels in the last six or seven games have stepped up. “If we continue doing that, some of these draws will turn into wins. “On Tuesday there was a real belief we could win. “But going behind and equalising made it a good point – the lads are in a good place at the moment.”

He saw his side come from behind at half-time to secure a point through Adam Webster’s header. As against Crystal Palace on Friday and in the recent draw at Stamford Budge, the point was the least they deserved. Potter said his side knew they were well in the contest even when they trailed to a goal out of the blue by Hakim Ziyech. He said: “They scored from a little bit out of nothing but the boys’ understanding is good. They are intelligent. “They know they are in the game. They know they are performing well. “It is just about keeping that going, try and enjoy the second half, maintain the positivity and see what we can do. “I thought we had a good start and overall I am just so happy for the players. “They put everything into the game. “Great personality, great spirit on the pitch. “I thought it was a fantastic atmosphere and a good game.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter says he is happy at Brighton amid Everton links #BHAFC #EvertonFC

Graham Potter says he is happy to be working for “one of the best run clubs in the Premier League”. The Albion head coach has again been speculatively linked with Everton after Rafa Benitez was sacked yesterday. But there appears no reason for Albion fans to be concerned about him heading to Merseyside. Potter underlined that when asked about Everton today in his press conference ahead of tomorrow’s visit from Chelsea. Potter said: “It’s not nice when somebody loses their job. “I only met Rafa when we played Everton so I don’t know him that well but he came across as a real gentleman. I wish him well. “I can’t comment on speculation, on things that are out there in the newspapers or wherever. “I am focused on my job here. Repeat – happy here, very happy here with, in my opinion, one of the best run football clubs in the Premier League, with a fantastic owner, chairman, CEO, sports director, great people at the club, a nice environment to work in, an ambitious club. “I just get on with my job here and do my best.” Potter has guided Albion into the top half of the Premier League, helped by a recent win at Goodison. But he is keen to point out that progress has been a collective affair. He said: “The reality is I am at a really good football club who help me. “I am not here because I’m that good, it’s because I am at a good club. “I have good support, I have good people around me, I have people who allow me to do my job, that give me support, that give me trust. “These things are important. “There is an organisation around the club. “The reality of it is we are not as good as people think. He replied: “We’re comfortable with where we’re at, we know the situation. “From my perspective, I’m just trying to help him when he comes back from the AFCON to perform to his best. #PLStories- Graham Potter praises team efforts in FA Cup win versus West Brom #BHAFC

Graham Potter said he was happy with Albion’s comeback from a goal down to beat West Brom 2-1 in the FA Cup third round this afternoon. Albion fielded a strong side but found themselves one nil down before substitute Jakub Moder levelled the scores with a cool near-post finish 81 minutes in. Brighton were denied by former keeper David Button on several occasions. But Neal Maupay secured the victory in extra time to continue his strong form and take Albion into the next round of the cup. The opening stages saw West Brom put Albion under pressure, with Potter’s side taking some time to find their rhythm with a slightly rotated team. Danny Welbeck was played in by Pascal Gross but saw his effort saved by David Button one-on-one. Meanwhile Enock Mwepu came off in the first half with a suspected hamstring injury and was replaced by Alexis Mac Allister. Neal Maupay also had a glorious chance when he was poked through by Welbeck, but the Frenchman was denied by Button on the verge of half time to keep it all square. It would not take long for West Brom to ruffle some Albion feathers, with Karlan Grant slipping a ball into Callum Robinson who slotted past Scherpen just two minutes into the second half. Albion were given a life line back into the game 69 minutes in when Cedric Kipre was sent off for two yellow cards in the space of a couple of minutes, the second for a pull on Trossard’s shirt. Two Albion substitutes combined when 17-year-old Evan Ferguson played a ball into Jakub Moder, who finished expertly at the front post past David Button. Cucurella’s introduction also made a noticeable difference on the left-hand side. Ferguson almost scored a first senior goal when he was played in and dinked just over, with the ball landing on the roof of the net. Evan Ferguson looked sharp on his senior debut Albion continued to apply the pressure to West Brom with David Button making a number of smart saves from Albion’s long range efforts to take the game into extra time. But Albion's one man advantage would pay dividends, Jakub Moder found space on the right-hand side and turned provider with a pass into the area which was well left by Leandro Trossard for Neal Maupay, who continued his good recent form with a smart finish into the near post eight minutes into extra time. Evan Ferguson also had a goal pulled back for offside after a pass through from Moder again, but the youngster strayed well offside. The closing stages of the match were straight-forward for Potter’s men, who were left with an abundance of space against West Brom’s tiring legs. Potter applauds Albion's travelling support who were in fine voice Potter said they knew it would be a tough match but he was happy to progress in the cup. He said: “It was hard work, we thought it would be and knew it would be because of West Brom’s quality and style of play. They’re very competitive so we had to compete with that, which we did. “We conceded against the run of play I thought from pretty much their only chance and the response was good. But in the end, really nice to go through and I’m happy to go through. “We will try our best in the FA Cup, it was important for us to go through today, we wanted to win. We picked a team with that in mind, to win. “As you can see from results in the competition, it’s not straightforward but we had a good mentality. The away support was fantastic and we’re delighted to go through.” The fourth round draw for the FA Cup takes place after tomorrow’s games at 4.50pm.

#PLStories- Graham Potter confirms Promising Brighton midfielder Taylor Richards has joined Championship side Birmingham City on loan #BHAFC

ALBION youngster Taylor Richards has joined Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder becomes the latest young player to make the move to the Championship. Head coach Graham Potter said, "Taylor has been with the first-team squad for the first part of the season, he has benefitted from that time and he has made great progress during that time. "He has played in the Carabao Cup ties and also made his Premier League debut, but we feel it is now important for him to play regular football during the second half of the season and he will get that opportunity with Birmingham, a club I know well." He scored 11 goals and contributed five assists in 48 appearances during a highly successful spell at Rovers in League One. Richards, who joined Albion in 2019 from Manchester City, has also represented England at under-17 level. He made his Premier League debut as a substitute in the home match against Everton earlier this season, and has made five first-team appearances for Albion.

Albion have been warned not to get too far ahead of themselves with thoughts of FA Cup glory. They kick off their campaign away to Championship high-flyers West Brom tomorrow. The Baggies are unbeaten at home in the league with seven wins and five draws. Seagulls boss Graham Potter said: “It’s a great club, West Brom. “I had three-and-a-bit years there so I know the people of the area. They are great supporters and back their team. “From an on-the-pitch perspective they are going through a bit of a transition with a new coach, a new style of play, but they are still up there competing to be in the Premier League and I think they will get better the longer they work together. “I am impressed with West Brom as a club. “They are a football club that have probably had too many head coaches recently, so they are going through a little bit of a transition with Valerien (Ismael) and how that style develops will take a little bit of time to see the full potential of everything. “But not so long ago they were in the Premier League. “They have still got a few of those players and will add a few more to supplement their ideas. “They are giving a few young players a chance as well, so they are moving in the right direction.” Albion won 3-1 after extra-time in a replay at the Hawthorn three years ago on their way to the semi-final. With no obvious relegation worries as things stand, Potter was asked whether they can give the cup “a really good go” this term. GRAHAM POTTER HAPPY WITH BRIGHTON STRIKER OPTIONS He said: “We will have a really good go at beating West Brom, because we’re in a good moment. “But we play a side who I am sure want to progress. “We will respect our opponent, we will try our best to go through. “It’s West Brom at the Hawthorns in the FA Cup, it’s by no means an easy game.”

#PLStories- Brighton boss Graham Potter praises side after victory over Everton #BHAFC

Graham Potter praised his team after a historic first Premier League victory over Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon. Albion’s boss said it was a great way to finish a busy week for the Seagulls, after beating Brentford on Boxing Day and drawing with Chelsea on Wednesday night. Albion won the game through Alexis Mac Allister, who opened the scoring just three minutes in after latching on to a cushioned Neal Maupay header. The Argentine helped double Brighton’s lead when he swung in a corner which was flicked on by Enock Mwepu to give Dan Burn an easy header at the far post. Albion saw out a dominant first half despite a fortunate penalty miss from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. But Rafa Benitez’s side came out with a point to prove, with Everton academy graduate, Anthony Gordon, clawing one back with a deflected shot early in the second half. Alexis Mac Allister would ease nerves once again with a superb half volley 71 minutes in, before Gordon applied the pressure again with a tidy finish at the near post just five minutes later. Albion players mob Alexis Mac Allister after his second strike of the game, picture by Richard Parkes Albion held their nerve and saw out the game to secure a first win at Goodison Park in the Premier League, having previously lost on all four previous visits to Merseyside. Graham Potter said: “It’s a fantastic three points. It is a great start to the new year and a great end to a really big week for us. “Obviously three points against Brentford, a point and good performance against Chelsea and a good performance here today which historically is not an easy place to come to. “I thought we played well first in the first half, then the goal that we didn’t want changes the atmosphere of the game in the ground and you have to see that out, and we did that quite well.” Albion take on West Brom away in the FA Cup on Saturday, with Valérien Ismaël’s side sitting fourth in the Championship. #PLStories- Brighton boss Graham Potter open minded over striker’s future #BHAFC

ALBION boss Graham Potter is "open-minded" when it comes to the future of striker Jurgen Locadia. The striker has found game time hard to come by this season, having only played 187 minutes in four appearances in all competitions this season. Locadia spent last season out on loan and was expected by many to leave the club on the permanent deal during the summer but ended up staying and becoming part of the squad. The manager admitted that the club will do what it is best for Locadia in the January transfer window. Jurgen Locadia joined Brighton and Hove Albion in 2018 He said: "Like all the players who have been limited in game time, you've got to look at what is best for them when the window opens. "Jurgen has been great since he's come back, working hard, working for the team. "We're open-minded and we will see." The 28-year-old joined Albion in January 2018 for a reported fee of £15 million, but has struggled to establish himself at the club and has only scored three league goals since the transfer.

#PLStories- Graham Potter predicts ‘big future’ for promising young academy striker #BHAFC

ALBION boss Graham Potter has predicted that young striker Evan Ferguson has a "big future" ahead of him. The 17-year-old has been in good form for the academy side, having scored nine goals in only 16 appearances this season. There have even been calls from fans for the Irishman to be given a chance in the Premier League side to help with the club's forward line. Ferguson has made his debut for the first team this season in the Carabao Cup and has been named on the bench in the Premier League squad in three different games. Evan Ferguson has been in fine form this season However, he is yet to make his Premier League debut, but Potter believes that the experience of being with the first team is good for the promising youngster. The Albion manager said: "It's great for him, he's a young guy, but he's got a big future I think. "I've been really impressed with him in training, he's got really good movement, you can see his qualities, his goals, they are not by accident that's for sure, he knows where to be in the box and around the defenders. "The more he is with us, the better he will get. "The guys in the academy have done a fantastic job with him, now it's about the next stage. "We need to take it at the right pace for him, but while he's in the first team it's a great experience for him.

#PLStories- Graham Potter raves about Marc Cucurella making an impact in Premier League #BHAFC

It wasn't quite a two-horse race in the man of the match stakes when Albion drew at Chelsea. There was a third runner to keep an eye on - runner being the operative word. Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend gave the nod to Romelu Lukaku in the 1-1 draw as he offered co-commentary on Amazon Prime Video. Hearing that was not necessarily a surprise for those of us who were not watching the match on TV. After all, aren’t these choices often made a few minutes from the end of the game, not right on the final whistle? Presumably Townsend had made his selection when it seemed Lukaku had scored the only goal of the contest. When you realised he actually made the call after Albion had secured their well-deserved point, it became harder to justify him not going for their driving force Yves Bissouma. In theory of course, the fact Danny Welbeck headed in a cross should not really affect your judgment of 90-minute performances by Lukaku and Bissouma. But that is sort of how it works. However, there was another very strong contender. And he had chipped in a pinpoint cross for his second important intervention in front of one goal or the other in as many games. No one talks much about Marc Cucurella these days. Certainly not in the regular Zoom sessions us reporters have with Graham Potter before and after games. And that speaks highly of how he has settled into his new league and new club. There has not been a huge amount to ask. No dips, no dramas, no absences. He just keeps going. We might have seen him at his best on Wednesday as he returned to West London for the first time since an eye-catching debut at Brentford on September 11. Raiding down the left flank, of course. But also tucking around as part of a three in defence which allowed Tariq Lamptey to play as a wing-back when Albion had possession in what was a pretty daring set-up, showing massive but justified faith in Dan Burn and Joel Veltman. And then the precision in added time with a sort of scooped, wedged cross on to the head of Welbeck, who did the rest. So now really was the time as Potter appeared on our laptop screens from the depths of the old East Stand at Stamford Bridge. Your assessment of the progress and adaptation made by Marc Cucurella, please. Potter told The Argus: “He has been fantastic. I can’t speak highly enough of him. “As a character he has been top since he has come. “A breath of fresh air, great enthusiasm. Great desire to play football, to run, to run off the ball, to tackle, everything you want. Supporters must love him.” But has he progressed in any particular aspect? “It’s just adapting to the country, adapting to the league. “I think his first game was away at Brentford. “It was a bit of a ‘welcome to English football’ type thing. But he has adapted. “That’s why he came here. “He wanted to take that challenge, he has got the personality, he has got the quality.” It was indeed a welcome to England moment, although the old-fashioned whack he took after about five minutes was from his compatriot Sergi Canos. When Albion met Brentford again last week, Cucurella came up with that other key moment in front of goal as he somehow got back to head off the line. Potter said: “Playing in the team will help him. “The more he understands the team, the more we understand him, the better he will get.” One reason Cucurella is not talked about so much in our post-match media sessions might actually be his pace. It gets him back in position before he needs to pull off eye-catching tackles. There was one notable occasion at Chelsea when the home side burst away on a counter in the second half with Cucurella well forward. However he got back quickly and there was no need for anything spectacular. He just got back goalside of his man, slowed him down and made him play a pass inside. Not headline-grabbing or highlight reel stuff but effective defending. Can it take him into the national team? Such is the standing of the Premier League right now, any player performing well, week in and week out, must have a chance of international recognition for any country, surely? His one cap came came when the under-21s were promoted en bloc to fulfil a friendly fixture due to Covid concerns among the seniors ahead of Euro 2020, a decision which delayed Robert Sanchez's debut. "For now Cucu is the fourth or fifth option," said Jordi Gil, who covers Spain for Barcelona-based Diario Sport. "Ahead of him are Jordi Alba, Gaya and Marcos Alonso. "If any of those are injured, they will bring in Reguilon, so it's difficult. OUR BRIGHTON REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2021 "For now he has been called up once by Luis Enrique but without playing. "But we will see. In March there are friendlies against Albania and Iceland and he could look at a few players then. "That's the thing about Lucho (Enrique). With him, you never know!"

#PLStories- Chelsea boss fumes with referees after being denied penalty against Brighton #CHELSEAFC #BHAFC

CHELSEA manager Thomas Tuchel has hit out at referee Mike Dean for denying Chelsea a “100 per cent penalty” and also a possible goal for Mason Mount against Albion. Tuchel felt Christian Pulisic was definitely fouled in the box after a challenge from Albion defender Joel Veltman in the second half, while Mount rolled the ball into the empty net only to see play brought back for a foul on the Dutchman. He told media after the game: “We have a 100 per cent penalty against Christian Pulisic, a 50-50 challenge from Mason Mount right before their equaliser. Antonio Rudiger was lucky not to be given a red card “Why does he even need to whistle before the ball is over the line? We have VAR to check. Is he so sure or does he want to keep the tension up? “And the penalty, it’s a joke, honestly it’s a joke not to intervene from VAR.” Albion proved full value for their draw amid a madcap encounter, with ex-Arsenal striker Welbeck popping up with the leveller with just his seventh touch having climbed off the bench. Albion manager Graham Potter did not think that Chelsea should have had a penalty. He said: “I’d have to see it back, live I didn’t think it was. I guess that’s why they’ve got VAR. “If it was 100 per cent I think it would be given, I didn’t think it was at the time but I was quite a way away to be honest.” However, Albion were equally denied by the referee as Antonio Rudiger arguably could have seen red for a two-footed challenge on Tariq Lamptey. There was also an elbow from Romelu Lukaku on Neal Maupay which left him with a visibly swore nose in the build-up to the Chelsea goal.

#PLStories- Graham Potter hails team after late goal steals the show against Chelsea #BHAFC #CHELSEAFC

ALBION boss Graham Potter has praised his team's efforts after they earned another point on the road thanks to a last-minute goal. It is becoming a recurring theme in Potter's team to score a late goal and deny their opponents' victory as they have done it against Crystal Palace, West Ham, Southampton and now Chelsea. At Stamford Bridge, Danny Welbeck was the hero as his header snatched a point from the jaws of defeat to see Albion climb back into the top half of the Premier League table. Brighton and Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck scored the goal against Chelsea Potter however does not think the team's late heroics are down to luck. He told media after the game: "I thought it was a fantastic performance from the players, it was full of courage and full of quality against a top side. "To come here and be ourselves is a big challenge and I thought we were and that is a credit to the players, they were fantastic tonight." The manager admitted that the performance was one of the best away outings the club have had since he joined the club. He said: "We performed well against Liverpool twice away, we have won and drawn there and that is not easy to do. "Tonight was up there that is for sure, we have celebrated a point but I think it is more the performance and the courage that was shown as a group. "I hope it is something we can take forward."

#PLStories- Brighton boss Graham Potter agrees with Jurgen Klopp on subs #BHAFC

Graham Potter wants more help with protecting his playing resources in the pandemic. The Albion head coach has repeated his preference for an increase to five substitutions in Premier League matches. He is carefully monitoring his squad ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Chelsea. Potter withdrew goalscorer Leandro Trossard midway through the Boxing Day win over Brentford due to hamstring tightness. Yves Bissouma will be available after a ban as Albion tackle the second of three games in a week. With Covid still casting a shadow over Prem action, Potter would like the option of making more changes in a game, as was the case during the Restart fixtures. He said: “Our position was always five subs. That was what we voted for. “I was a little surprised that Jordan Henderson is talking about player welfare and even the clubs don’t think about player welfare so what chance have you got? “Our stance was always that and then it is up to the league to decide.” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been clear in his views on subs but believes he does not have support from most of his Prem counterparts. Klopp said: "You need 14 votes to change it and there’s something wrong. We talk about an issue that some players and clubs definitely have but it’s decided by other teams. That is a real problem. “The best and most intense league in the world is the only league in Europe and maybe the world with still three subs. That is not right. We should change it (but) I don’t see a chance to change it, to be honest.” The Premier League yesterday announced 103 new coronavirus cases among club players and staff, the highest weekly number recorded since testing figures began being circulated in May last year. The league has also confirmed it has reverted to emergency measures following a series of postponements. Increased testing to daily lateral flow and twice-weekly PCR tests have been introduced. Lateral flow testing was previously carried out twice a week. BRIGHTON READY TO MAKE LEANDRO TROSSARD CALL AT CHELSEA Danny Welbeck, who had hamstring surgery and was out for three months, is in contention for playing time at Stamford Bridge after half a game against Brentford. #PLStories- Graham Potter admits uncertainty about playing squad before Brentford game #BHAFC

Graham Potter is hoping for for a healthy Christmas and New Year – starting with his squad as they prepare to face Brentford. The Albion head coach wants no unpleasant surprises ahead of the Boxing Day evening clash at the Amex (8pm, Sky). Two Premier League games have already gone from Sunday’s programme with Liverpool v Leeds and Wolves v Watford postponed after requests from the away teams. Albion will train tomorrow, then allow players home for lunch and family time. Potter is set to welcome back up to five senior players while the return of Shane Duffy from a ban is balanced by Yves Bissouma’s one-match suspension. He said: “I think we'll have a couple not available but obviously we have a couple more days of testing to go so you never know. “That was certainly our experience last week because last week we said four and by the time the game comes around we had more than four.” Potter is happy to play on, despite talk of a possible postponement over Christmas. Managers and head coaches met to discuss player welfare yesterday. Potter said: “I don't really think about it in terms of our situation. “I think that's short-sighted. I think you've got to think what's the best thing, the right thing. #PLStories- Graham Potter plays down a need for defender in January #BHAFC

Graham Potter has played down any January move for a defender. Albion will be without Lewis Dunk into the New Year - though the hope is not for too long - and have seen Adam Webster suffer a disrupted season. That comes on top of the £50 million sale of Ben White last summer although Shane Duffy’s return from loan at Celtic has been a success. Potter was asked about any plans to add a defender next month when he spoke at his media conference ahead of the Brentford game. Joe Rodon of Tottenham rivals Dan James as the player with whom he has been speculatively linked ever since he moved from Swansea City to take over as Albion head coach. However, it appeared the question was also being asked in relation to a recall for one of the defenders out on loan. Dependent on the terms of the specific deals, that could be Jan Paul van Hecke, who has helped Blackburn’s recent surge up the Championship. Or potentially Matt Clarke or Leo Ostigard or even Alex Cochrane, best known as a wing-back but now operating on the left of a three for Hearts. Potter said: “It’s not an area we’re looking to strengthen because of the players we have but you never know what the window does. "It’s not completely disregarded, but it isn’t a priority. “The loans, you’ve got to look whether it’s right for them to be recalled, whether it’s possible for them to be recalled. "Sometimes the loan is there until the end of the season, sometimes you’ve got an option to bring them back in January. “In that situation I can’t see anything changing really.” GRAHAM POTTER REVEALS HOPES AND PLANS FOR BRIGHTON V BRENTFORD Albion are not big fans of making loan signings of their own. Potter added: “It’s something we’ll discuss as a club. “As a general rule, it’s not something we’re overly keen on doing, because obviously that means the guys we have aren’t getting game time. “That isn’t best for us, generating future development. PREMIUM EXCLUSIVE: HOW CALDE AND ALBION'S FOREIGN PLAYERS TACKLED A FOOTBALLING CHRISTMAS “But you’ve always got to keep looking, what’s the best solution, be open-minded. #PLStories- Graham Potter has sympathies with fans on Brighton’s 8pm Boxing Day kick-off #BHAFC

Graham Potter feels for Albion and Brentford fans over their unpopular Boxing Day kick-off time. Seagulls and Bees go head to head at the Amex at 8pm. Albion have laid on a range of extra travel options, which can be seen at brightonandhovealbion.com. Head coach Potter said: “I feel for the supporters. “I’m not sure it is the best time if I am being polite. “It is a lot for them in terms of the challenges they will have in getting to the ground. “I understand the club has done a really good job in terms of help in trying to help get them there, travel plans, but clearly it is not the best. “As a supporter you want to be there at 3pm or midday. “Get a bit of air, have a day at the football, but it is not to be. GRAHAM POTTER'S BRIGHTON V BRENTFORD PRESS CONFERENCE “But I’m sure that the guys that are there are the ones that will support us, they always do. “They will get behind the team but it’s not a great time and I feel for them in terms of the time of the kick-off.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter on Christmas fixtures as Managers meet to discuss player welfare #BHAFC

It is more than a decade now since former Albion boss Gus Poyet told The Argus he could not understand the Christmas schedule. "I love Boxing Day but why play on the 28th?" he asked in typically animated style at the club's former training base at the University of Sussex. The answer appears pretty simple. Everyone wants a home game over Christmas, including the clubs drawn to play away on December 26. So you almost create a second Boxing Day. As it turned out, Albion won that unwanted fixture 5-2 at Wycombe with Glenn Murray scoring four times. But the bigger picture is that concerns over playing too many games persist – and are increased in current circumstances. Premier League managers and head coaches discuss player welfare today. Albion boss Graham Potter said: “Traditionally, since I’ve played, we’ve played on the 26th and the 28th. “I don’t think we’re playing any more games than that this year but what we’ve got this year is a pandemic which means the squads and players are even more under pressure. “Already you’ve got an issue and then it’s compounded by a virus that is spreading through the population quite quickly. “Then you’ve got the issues of isolation and trying to be fit. GRAHAM POTTER'S VERDICT ON 8PM BOXING DAY KICK-OFF “There is more and more pressure on the players, so in an ideal world we probably haven’t got the balance right. “But we’re not in an ideal world.” Potter has accepted the fact Albion’s appeal for a postponement versus Wolves was unsuccessful. He said: “We put the request in because we had consecutive days of Covid issues, but we had to play and you have to get on with it and deal with it. “I think everyone is trying their best in very difficult circumstances. “The way it is, sometimes it’s like a refereeing decision, it goes your way or it doesn’t. “Everybody is doing their best. “I don’t think anyone is acting without integrity, put it that way.” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been clear in his criticism of the schedule. He said: "I think it would be better with one game, absolutely, but obviously what I say is not too important. “If there are two games then we will play two games. But it would be helpful if there was only one, true.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter reveals Danny Welbeck among Brighton stars set to return to playing squad #BHAFC

Albion have received a major boost ahead of their Boxing Day clash with Brentford. Danny Welbeck, Neal Maupay and Pascal Gross will all be available to face the Bees. Welbeck has been missing since the draw at Crystal Palace in September. Maupay and Gross were absent when the Seagulls lost to Wolves last week. Adam Webster could also return from injury depending on how he trains for the rest of the week. Head coach Graham Potter said: “There are a couple still Covid-related issues. “Joel Veltman is not too bad, he is more fatigue. GRAHAM POTTER'S BRIGHTON V BRENTFORD PRESS CONFERENCE “We need to just monitor him. We will probably make a decision with him later in the week. “We have got a lot of people returning.” Webster has trained so far this week so is currently on course for the Brentford game.

#PLStories- Brighton boss questions possible inconsistencies over Covid-19 postponements #BHAFC

ALBION boss Graham Potter believes it will be difficult for the Premier League to continue with the current trend of only some games being deemed worthy of postponement due to coronavirus infections among players. Potter revealed Albion were unsuccessful in their request for Wednesday evening’s clash with Wolves – a 1-0 loss – to be rearranged following a Covid-19 and injury crisis at the club. The depleted Seagulls were without a host of influential players for the game, with top scorer Neal Maupay and Pascal Gross the latest men to join the growing list of absentees. Brighton’s scheduled meeting with Tottenham on Sunday was postponed due to a Covid outbreak at the north London club, while Brentford versus Manchester United and Watford’s trip to Burnley were called off in similar circumstances on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister “We asked the question because of our situation,” he said of a possible postponement. “You haven’t really got time to be disappointed (with being turned down). It was about preparing the team, preparing for the game.” Speaking of the apparent lack of consistency in decision-making, he continued: “You obviously have to think everyone is doing things in the best intentions. “There will be frustration with that. “It would be better if it was more transparent but at the same time you’re talking about medical information so I don’t know how transparent that can be. “I think the path we’re on, I’m not sure how long we can stay on it for. “We all want football to continue, want life to continue as best as we can but clearly health is the most important thing. “We’ve got some issues ourselves and this week has been a little bit disturbing in terms of how quickly we’ve been affected. “If that carries on then we’ll have to have some serious thought (about action being suspended).” Albion's winless run in the top flight stretched to a club-record 11 games after Romain Saiss’ first-half volley earned the visitors a deserved victory.
Leandro Trossard

#PLStories- Graham Potter gives update on Leandro Trossard after Saints injury #BHAFC

GRAHAM Potter has given an update on Leandro Trossard after suffering an injury during the Premier League fixture against Southampton. The forward who is celebrating his 27th birthday was stretched off against the Saints in the 85th minute after receiving treatment on the pitch. Trossard suffered an injury to his elbow, but according to manager Graham Potter, the injury was not a bad as first thought. Potter said: "It was an elbow, we don't think it was as bad as first thought. "But again we have not had a massive amount of information. "The early diagnosis is a bit more positive, we will have to see how it goes over the next day or so." The forward had to leave the pitch, leaving Albion with only ten men on the pitch. However, similar to Wednesday night it seemed to spur Albion on as they grabbed a 98th-minute equaliser through Neal Maupay.

#PLStories- Graham Potter full of praise for comeback spirit of players against Saints #BHAFC

GRAHAM Potter has praised the spirit of his players after they came from behind to earn a point against Southampton. Albion were not fully at the races as Southampton took the lead through Armando Broja in the first half. Despite the game looking like it was going to end in defeat, the ten men of Albion fought back and equalised in the 98th minute to grab a point from the game. Neal Maupay was the man again to be the hero after he intervened with Jakub Moder's volley, to score the goal himself. Albion were down to ten men after Leandro Trossard was forced off with an elbow injury. Brighton and Hove Albion players celebrate the late equaliser against Southampton Despite another game going by without a win, Potter was proud of the way his players pushed back in the game and gained another result. Potter said: "If it happens more than once, it can’t be luck. There’s a great spirit with the players. We weren’t at our best at all, it was a really scrappy game. "We pushed and pushed, and it was fantastic for Neal Maupay to get the goal. "Stuff has happened with injuries and the guys have had to adjust and reset. The character of the team is fantastic. "A win’s a win, still three points. Consistently, we're still in there and fighting for points. The league is so competitive, nobody gives you anything. As always, we can continue to improve and try to get points."

#PLStories- Brighton boss admits team were not at best during draw with Southampton #BHAFC

ALBION manager Graham Potter has admitted that his side were not at their best during the first half of the match against Southampton. The Seagulls fell behind during the first 45 minutes of the Premier League fixture against the Saints after Robert Sanchez was punished for a poor clearance by Armando Broja. There was a big improvement from the players during the second half and managed to scrap a draw after Neal Maupay's late equaliser. Potter was happy with the improvement that he saw from his players in the second period of the match. Brighton and Hove Albion players celebrate Neal Maupay's equaliser The manager told the press after the game: "I think we have to be honest, we were not at our best in the first half. "Southampton were a better version of themselves than we were, that is not a criticism of the players, these things happen and I take responsibility for that as well. "We adjusted things in the second half and I think we were a little bit better, the game was more even and we probably edged it. "The second half we went down to ten men and we just kept going and created some opportunities and created some pressure and created some danger and in the end it was great to score. "Great to get the point." The draw sees Albio collect one point from St Mary's and stay in ninth place in the Premier League table.

#PLStories- Graham Potter will continue to take his time with Tariq Lamptey #BHAFC

ALBION boss Graham Potter will continue to tread carefully with Tariq Lamptey despite the youngster’s dynamic performances in the last two matches. Full-back Lamptey is still building up his strength and fitness a year after suffering a serious hamstring injury that sidelined him for nine months. The 21-year-old gave Leeds a torrid 75 minutes before being withdrawn in the 0-0 draw at the Amex last weekend and then climbed off the bench to set up Neal Maupay’s late equaliser in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at West Ham. Albion fans are hoping for Lamptey to get more minutes on the pitch, but Potter says the hectic December schedule means he cannot risk the Chelsea youth product from the start in every match. “We’re going through a period where we’re going to play lots of games in a short space of time so that’s the only thing that’s going to stop the regularity of Tariq,” said Potter. “We all know his qualities and what he brings to the team. It’s just the close proximity of games will challenge him and us in terms of how much he plays and when he plays.” Lamptey is likely to return to the starting line-up when Albion travel along the south coast to face Southampton on Saturday.
Aaron Connolly Brighton

#PLStories- Brighton manager confirms that Aaron Connolly could make return to squad #BHAFC

ALBION manager Graham Potter has played down injury fears ahead of the weekend's match against Southampton. Three Albion players will miss the game after picking up injuries against West Ham last night. Adam Webster, Adam Lallana and Jeremy Sarmiento all picked up injuries and needed to be substituted in order to receive treatment. However, fans can rest easy as the boss has played down concerns that the squad would not be able to deal with the added strain, suggesting that he is prepared to call upon some of the younger players at the club. Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter Potter has hinted that Aaron Connolly could make his return to the matchday squad following the injury to Lallana. Potter said: "We were hoping to get some minutes into him with the under 23s, but it looks like he will be with the group come the weekend. "We are still in the process of checking on everyone and recovering. "We will make some decisions tomorrow - if we need some of the under-23s then, of course, we will use them. "but at the moment, it doesn't look like we will need to.”
