#PLStories- Arsenal star defender Ben White eyes England success after returning to national team #ARSENALFC

A FORMER Albion star says pre-match curries and half-time fights have prepared him for another stint of international football. Ben White, who left Brighton and Hove Albion last year, has worked his way back into Gareth Southgate’s squad having not been involved since reaching the final of Euro 2020. The Arsenal defender didn’t play a minute of football in the tournament after replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold, winning his only caps to date in two warm-up games. White, who signed for Arsenal for £50 million in July 2021, is now back in the squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup, discussing his loan spell at Newport. “I don’t think I ever thought about playing for England then. I was just thinking I need to be good enough to play in League Two,” he said. “It was one of the best years of my life. I’d gone from an academy where everything is nice, and you have everything you want. And then you go there, and everything is completely different. You’re having a curry for your pre-match meal. “In my first game there was a punch-up at half-time between our own players in our own dressing room. It was a bit scary to be fair. I didn’t want to make any mistakes, that’s for sure.” After being released by Southampton at the age of 16, White said his career could have been derailed completely before joining Brighton. Former Albion star Ben White (right) and Manchester City forward Phil Foden “I didn’t know if I wanted to carry on. It was obviously tough not being wanted,” he said. “I wasn’t good enough when I was younger. I was a late developer. I was probably as tall as I am now but really skinny, gangly, couldn’t really run. “I went to Bristol Rovers on trial for three days. I only did two because we were literally just running up hills. Didn’t get a football out at all and it absolutely killed me, I couldn’t do it. “Then I got a trial at Leicester, they didn’t offer me anything.” After further loans at Peterborough and Leeds, White broke into the Brighton side last season. White played in Arsenal’s season-opening loss at newly-promoted Brentford before missing further defeats to Chelsea and Manchester City having tested positive for Covid-19. “The start of the season was tough,” he said. “The first game wasn’t ideal for me, I didn’t play very well and then I got Covid, so I was out for another two games. “It wasn’t the start I wanted but coming through the season now, I’m playing every week, the team is doing really well and it’s very positive.” White was criticised by pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher following his debut at Brentford. “I saw it, I think it was the first time I’ve actually been singled out. It’s never a nice feeling but it just gives me more incentive to go out there and do well,” he said. “You look at those two players and what they’ve achieved, particularly Jamie as a centre-half. “Some of it obviously you have to look at it and see what they’ve said and some of the stuff they said was true that game. “It wasn’t my best – obviously they’ve had amazing careers and hopefully one day I could have something like that.”

#PLStories- #BenWhite Agent lifts lid on how Brighton and Arsenal came to a consensus #ARSENALFC #BHAFC

Ben White’s agent has revealed Albion drove a hard bargain as they sold their star defender to Arsenal. The Gunners paid £50 million for White, who has had just one season of Premier League football behind him. A deal was reported to be complete by some sources some time ago – only for Albion sources, as reported by The Argus, to insist that was not yet the case. The two clubs eventually reached agreement and White’s move was confirmed last Friday. Agent Alex Levack told Sky Sports: “Maybe the biggest challenge really was agreeing a fee between the two clubs and a structure of the deal. “Brighton didn’t really want to sell and were not willing to give a valuation of the player. “With (Albion chairman) Tony Bloom being a poker player and a professional gambler, he’s a very hard man to read. PREDICTIONS ARE COMING IN FOR BRIGHTON'S 2021-22 SEASON “But I think both clubs dealt with the utmost integrity and it was pretty smooth. “And I think the outcome was best for all parties really.”

#PLStories- #BenWhite did not need much convincing to join Arsenal #ARSENALFC #BHAFC

Ben White admits he did not need to much convincing to join Arsenal. The 23-year-old defender joined the Gunners this afternoon from Albion, who received a club record £50 million for him. Read more: Ben White leaves Albion for Arsenal for fee of £50 million After joining White was asked what did Mikel Arteta say to convince him to join the club. However, White admits he did not need much convincing: He said: “I don’t think I needed too much convincing to be fair, obviously Arsenal speaks for itself. “I spoke to the gaffer a number of times during the summer and I got good vibes and the way the gaffer wants to play I can hopefully produce quality in this team and get Arsenal back.” White also revealed when he found about Arsenal’s interest in him. He said: “It was when I was away with England that is when it got a bit more serious. “So, it was obviously nice to find out and to be here is unbelievable.”

#PLStories- #BenWhite says When I was at Saints I didn’t have any confidence’ #BHAFC SAINTSFC

ENGLAND defender Ben White admitted he “didn’t have any confidence” coming through the youth ranks at Saints before reviving his career at Brighton. The 23-year-old grew up in the south, attending Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, while also playing football for county side Poole and East Dorset. His path to the top was far from straightforward, released by Saints as a teenager and coming through lower league loan spells, before helping Leeds United clinch promotion from the Championship and now establishing himself as a key centre-back for Brighton. Now part of England’s Euro 2020 group, White could feature in Gareth Southgate’s squad when they take on Germany in the last 16 on Tuesday. But the centre-back admits he is a totally different person now than when he found himself struggling in the academy at Saints. “When I was at Southampton I didn’t have any confidence,” he told talkSPORT. “The way I play now is with a lot of confidence. It’s the complete opposite of what I used to be. “I think coming through Brighton the coaches and the people really believed in me. “I think you get that with playing and at Southampton I was on the sidelines a lot. But I went Brighton and went straight into the team and played. “It’s tough when you get released and you’re not wanted. Especially when you’re young, it’s hard to deal with. “You either sink or swim, but for me I obviously wanted it a lot and it was the only thing I wanted at the time, so I went for it.” The defender has this summer been linked with a big money move to Arsenal, but insists his only focus at present is on progressing with England. Speaking about that speculation, White added: “It’s nice, it’s happened quite a lot over the last two years, there’s been a lot of noise. “You don’t know what’s true and what’s not. So there’s no real point talking about it.”

#PLStories- #BenWhite says he doesn’t discusses transfer ‘noise’ #BHAFC

Ben White says he doesn’t talk about transfer “noise” while on England duty. The Albion defender has been linked with Arsenal amid reports of a failed £40 million bid. There was suggestion on Thursday that a deal was close with the Gunners. However The Argus were told that was NOT the case – and that White has attracted interest from several clubs. It is a second successive summer of transfer speculation around the defender, who is with Gareth Southgate’s 26-man party at Euro 2020. White suggested it was nice to be wanted as he spoke to talkSPORT as a part of his England media commitments. He said: “It’s nice. It has happened quite a lot over the last two years, there’s been a lot of noise.” Asked whether he talks about it with other England players, he replied: “Not really. “You don’t know what’s true and what’s not. So there’s no real point talking about it.” Albion are in no rush to do business and have no particular need or desire to sell White.

England star Kalvin Phillips has revealed he told Ben White he was confident of making a big impact against Croatia. The Leeds midfielder capped an impressive performance by laying on the winner for Raheem Sterling on Sunday. He became good mates with White while the Albion defender was on loan at Elland Road. Phillips said today: “It was weird. I had a mad feeling before the game that I was maybe going to score. "I told Ben White I had that feeling and I came close to scoring but if I wasn't going to score, at least I set one up. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SQUAD, SAYS GARETH SOUTHGATE "Whenever I get a chance to be on the ball, I just think 'don't give it away'. "Given I had a 94% pass accuracy, my team-mates helped me out a lot and that is how it happened."

#PLStories- #BenWhite insists his England call-up has been ten years in the making #BHAFC

Brighton defender Ben White insisted his England call-up has been ten years in the making. The 23-year-old caught the eye of many in the 2019/20 season with his performances for Leeds in the Championship as he helped them win promotion back to the Premier League. However, prior to that he had been a regular in his first two loan spells away from Albion at Legaue Two side, Newport County and League One side, Peterborough United respectively. This season he made 36 appearances in his debut campaign in the Premier League for Albion. But White has stressed that his England call-up has come from ten years of hard work and not just his performances for Leeds in the 2019/20 season.  He said: "I wasn't made last year, I think I have worked hard for ten years and it doesn't suddenly come in a year and you are doing well. "I had two loans before that and played quite a few games there so that has helped me build and perform at the level that I have."

#PLStories- #BenWhite discusses his release from Saints squad and time at the academy #SAINTSFC #BHAFC

JAMES Ward-Prowse missed out on being England’s 26th man for Euro 2020 after defender Ben White was added to the squad. The Saints skipper impressed during the Three Lions’ 1-0 friendly win over Romania on Sunday before being replaced in the 65th-minute. Many thought Ward-Prowse would be the man to occupy the spot left void by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was forced to withdraw through injury last week. But 23-year-old White, who featured in Saints’ academy growing up before being released, earned the call to book his place at the tournament. Brighton centre-back White made his debut in last week’s 1-0 friendly win over Austria and impressed as he started alongside Tyrone Mings in the victory against Romania. Everton defender Ben Godfrey and Saints star Ward-Prowse were options who both started the Romania game, while Jesse Lingard and Ollie Watkins were also on the standby list, but will now return home. White grew up in the south, attending Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, while also playing football for county side Poole and East Dorset. Asked who was in Saints' academy at the same time as him, White told YouTube channel GAFFER: "I think (Alex Oxlade) Chamberlain, Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse), (Jack) Stephens, who are all playing in the Premier League now. “They’re not really my age, they were three years older than me, but they were the ones that I was watching. "After training they would be playing on the Saturday and I’d watch all their games." Discussing his release from Saints, White said: "It was hard. I didn’t get anything at 16. You’re just booted out and that’s it really. "You’re done and you’ve got to find your own way back. Luckily I managed to do that and get my trial at Brighton." White’s inclusion was announced by the Football Association on Monday morning as the team continue preparations for their European Championship opener against Croatia. Having trained in Middlesbrough, with both friendlies taking place at the Riverside Stadium, the squad will now be based at St George’s Park. Euro 2020 kicks off on Friday night, with England’s clash with Croatia at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

He said: “It’s been a great experience playing with the players that I have been playing with this week and shows me the level I need to be at, to be a top player like these boys. “It has been a great experience for me and obviously it has been tough, but really good.”

#PLStories- Brighton’s #BenWhite shines on his full England debut against Romania #BHAFC

The 23-year-old started and played the full 90 minutes for England in their 1-0 win over Romania in friendly at the Riverside Stadium yesterday evening. He became the first Albion player to start for England since skipper Lewis Dunk in a friendly against the USA at Wembley in November 2018. He partnered Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings at centre-half as part of a back four with Everton’s Ben Godfrey at right back and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw at left back. His performance earnt him plaudits from former England internationals Ian Wright and Lee Dixon, who were impressed by how ‘calm’ and ‘composed’ he was, with Dixon picking out White’s as the best performers in the back four. But after the game Gareth Southgate refused to be drawn on who will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, with White one of six players in the running for the vacant spot in his their 26-man squad for the Euros. He said: “We will check how we are after the game medically and check there is nothing else we need to go through, so we will make that decision in the next 24 hours.” The only goal of the game came in the 68th minute after substitute Tiberiu Capusa’s pulled down Jack Grealish in the box. Marcus Rashford stepped up and calmly tucked his effort into the bottom corner. England won another penalty in the 77th minute after Vlad Chiriches bundled Dominic Calvert-Lewin over. Substitute Jordan Henderson took it but saw his effort saved by Sparta Prague’s Florin Nita. England had been unlucky not to take the lead in the first half after Calvert-Lewin’s header and Jadon Sancho’s curling effort both came back off the crossbar.

#PLStories- #GarethSouthgate reveals Brighton’s #BenWhite was always aware he was not heading to Euros #BHAFC

England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed that Brighton defender Ben White knew he was coming in for the experience and the friendlies rather than the Euros. The 23-year-old defender was called up as part of Southgate's 33-man provisional squad last week. But he was one of the seven players to miss out on the chance to go to the Euros with England. However, Southgate revealed that the uncapped trio of White, Everton's Ben Godfrey and Sheffield United's Aaron Ramsdale knew they were coming in for the experience. He said: “You never want to give bad news. “It is lovely to give people debuts and bring people into the squad for the first time but it is much harder to deliver bad news. “This time, there were three boys who knew they were coming in for the experience of training with us and for these two matches, and who knows what might happen. "But they have trained really well.”

#PLStories- #BenWhite remembers journey from Saints rejection to provisional England squad #BHAFC

POOLE-born talent Ben White has been named in England's provisional squad for this summer's European Championship. The 23-year-old grew up in the south, attending Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne, while also playing football for county side Poole and East Dorset. His path to the top was far from straightforward, released by Saints as a teenager and coming through lower league loan spells, before helping Leeds United clinch promotion from the Championship last season and now establishing himself as a key centre-back for Brighton & Hove Albion. White has been named in Gareth Southgate's inflated 33-man selection, which will be whittled down to 26 next week ahead of the delayed Euro 2020 getting underway on June 11. Discussing his earliest memories of football, White told YouTube channel GAFFER: "In the garden with my mum. I’d be playing out there and she’d be hanging the washing up or something like that and I’d tell her to get in goal and boot the ball at her! She’d stay out there for hours with me." Asked when he first started playing as part of a team, White added: "I joined a little local side on a Sunday, played that for a season or so. I was playing midfield. "Then I had a trial at Southampton at the end of that season." Asked who was in Saints' academy at the same time as him, White continued: "I think (Alex Oxlade) Chamberlain, Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse), (Jack) Stephens, who are all playing in the Premier League now. They’re not really my age, they were three years older than me, but they were the ones that I was watching. "After training they would be playing on the Saturday and I’d watch all their games." White failed to make the grade at Saints, let go as a teenager. But he quickly found a new home, joining Brighton's academy in 2014. He spent time out on loan at Newport County and Peterborough United, before his successful season with Leeds. Discussing his release from Saints, White said: "It was hard. I didn’t get anything at 16. You’re just booted out and that’s it really. "You’re done and you’ve got to find your own way back. Luckily I managed to do that and get my trial at Brighton." White is one of six centre-backs in the provisional England squad. He is competing with the likes of John Stones, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady and Ben Godfrey for a place in the final 26-man group.

Gareth Southgate has explained why Ben White has made his provisional squad for the Euros. The England boss has hinted age and versatility hold the key both for the Albion man and Everton’s Ben Godfrey, who has also been included. Both players are 23. Southgate said: “They are both exciting young defenders, there are others we have been looking at that we really like. “These two are flexible, they play in different roles, this is a great opportunity to get to them a bit better for them to work with the team. #PLStories- #GarethSouthgate explains why he picked #BenWhite over #LewisDunk #BHAFC

England boss Gareth Southgate has explained his reasons for selecting Albion defender Ben White over his skipper and teammate Lewis Dunk. The 23-year-old received his first call-up as part of Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad ahead of the more experienced option of Dunk, who has already been capped by England. However, his omission from the squad came as a surprise to some pundits and fans including former England defender and manager Stuart Pearce. Read More: Stuart Pearce is surprised by Lewis Dunk’s omission from England squad But Southgate has explained that age played a part in his decision to pick White instead of Dunk. He said: “It’s less that we see him (Ben White) ahead of Lewis (Dunk), but Ben is a younger player and there is a bit of an investment for the future there. “We know Lewis has had a very good season with Brighton and I know Graham (Potter) is delighted with what he has done for them. “With Ben we have tracked him since he has been on loan at Leeds we have seen him play in midfield, we have seen him play across the backline, he is comfortable with the ball and he has got pace. “So we know it is still early with centre backs like Ben White, Ben Godfrey, Fikayo (Tomori). Centre backs usually mature much later. “But these guys are getting good experience at a young age in some of the top leagues in the world, they are working with good coaches at their clubs and we think it is a good opportunity for them to come and work with us.”
