#PLStories- Graham Potter praises Brighton for a fighting win against Watford #BHAFC #WatfordFC

Graham Potter praised a “really, really good performance” as his Albion side won 2-0 at Watford.

Neal Maupay scored a beauty right on half-time and Adam Webster joyfully crashed home a late second from a corner.

Albion boss Potter said: “I thought we played a really good game, reacted really well throughout the game.

“Good reactions when we lost the ball, good patience when we had the ball.

“We tried to attack, which is not easy against Roy’s teams because they defend well.

“You have got to be patient and wait for the opportunity to attack. We did that well.”

Albion had a testing start to the second half as Emmanuel Dennis hit the bar.

But they regained control thanks largely to a shrewd double change by Potter as he sent on Yves Bissouma and Alexis Mac Allister.

Potter said: “They were probably disappointed with their first half and changed to a 4-3-3 in the second half.

“There was a little bit of an adjustment period there and I think that was the time when we didn’t have the same control.

“But I think our subs helped us and we wrestled it back and then finished the game strongly.

“Credit to the players.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter expects injured Albion star Enock Mwepu back shortly #BHAFC

Enock Mwepu’s return from injury remains on hold.

It is five weeks now since the Zambia captain limped out of FA Cup action at West Brom holding the back of his right thigh.

Albion boss Graham Potter said: “We were half-expecting to get him back this week but he had a little bit of a setback – or sideways move.

“I’m expecting next week he should be there.

“It was not quite a tweak but it was not really serious.

“I think we have gone on the side of caution in trying to get him back fit and well as best we can and he has made progress.

“We are at the point now where he is not far away from the training with the group.”

#PLStories- Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits watching and admiring Burnley against Manchester United #LFC #MUFC #BurnleyFC

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp has singled out Wout Weghorst for praise ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with the Clarets.

The Dutch international impressed in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Tuesday night, setting up Jay Rodriguez’s equaliser.

Klopp says Burnley produced a “proper team performance” against the Red Devils and is expecting a tough test at Turf Moor this weekend.

“I had the pleasure to watch Burnley against United. This situation explains the Premier League the best,” said the Liverpool chief.

“The quality they produced was incredible. It was a proper team performance. There is a big possibility for them to still stay in the league.

“They brought in a new striker. If you saw the game, you would have seen he is a lively boy,” said Klopp.

“He was very active all over the pitch. Burnley ask for all physicality you can put in a game, we cannot have the ball all the time and they are good when they have the ball.

“They have footballers everywhere. On top of that, the set-piece threat, we have to be aware and concentrated.”

The Reds ran out 2-0 winners when the sides met at Anfield earlier this season thanks to goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane.

Klopp’s men sit second in the Premier League table – nine points behind leaders Manchester City, who have played an extra game.

#PLStories- Sean Dyche admits Covid-19 postponements gave Burnley players time to reset #BURNLEYFC

SEAN Dyche believes the postponement of games due to Covid-19 last month offered his Burnley players a chance to reset as they try to dig themselves out of trouble at the bottom of the Premier League.

Burnley saw games against Leicester and Watford called off in mid-January due to an outbreak of the virus within Dyche’s squad.

It came at a time when Burnley had lost three matches on the bounce, losing to Manchester United and Leeds in the league while being knocked out of the FA Cup by Huddersfield – a match Dyche himself missed while in isolation – but they are unbeaten since returning to action at Arsenal on January 23.

That match at the Emirates finished goalless, while they have since drawn at home with fellow strugglers Watford and, on Tuesday, Manchester United – a result which lifted spirits ahead of Sunday’s visit of Liverpool.

“I think we had to re-check ourselves after the game against Leeds (a 3-1 defeat on January 2),” Dyche said.

“We had a period with injuries and Covid and there was a period of realignment of players’ thoughts. We got back to basics against Arsenal with our defensive performance and on another day it could have been more than a draw.

“We took that into the next game and did pretty well, didn’t take our chances, then against Man United it was a soft first half and a strong second half. The mentality is there. I never think we’re far away, but we have to start making things happen.”

Burnley may be rooted to the foot of the table but remain a tough nut to crack.

Though still with only one league win all season, Dyche’s side have drawn seven of their last 11 and their tally of eight defeats is the lowest of any side in the bottom seven.

“It shows consistency but obviously the winning mentality is key,” Dyche said. “We want that mentality and the only way to get it is to earn it, to win games, but I think there’s been an edge to our performance.

“We didn’t feel like we’d been in the right place but we got back to what the team should be against Arsenal.

“I like the consistency of getting points and delivering clean sheets but we know we can’t keep drawing games. We’ve got to go and win so it’s about finding that winning edge.”

Few may back Burnley to pick up only their second win of the campaign against a Liverpool side trying to chase down Manchester City in the title race, but then few had money on them taking points from Manchester United and Arsenal either.

“All games are winnable,” Dyche said. “That has to be the mentality. Ours is firm and it’s got to be on Sunday against another top outfit. But we look at ourselves and what we’re looking to build.”

Burnley were second best in the first half on Tuesday and fortunate not to be trailing by more – United had two goals disallowed either side of Paul Pogba’s strike – but the second half performance pointed the way to safety as they had chances to win after Jay Rodriguez’s equaliser.

But though fans left Turf Moor buoyed by what they had seen, the gap to safety grew on the night as Newcastle beat Everton before Norwich took a point against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

“There’s a reality to where we are and we accept that reality,” Dyche said. “We could have changed it earlier in the season and we haven’t done so there’s a responsibility from the staff and the players, and we accept that.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter hails Leandro Trossard as ‘unique’ talent for Brighton #BHAFC

Leandro Trossard has been told he can add something extra for Albion on his return to action.

But the Belgium international should still be targeting more goals and assists, according to his head coach.

Trossard is available to face Watford tomorrow after a positive Covid test ruled him out of the FA Cup exit at Tottenham.

He was left on the bench last time Albion went to Vicarage Road, for a 3-0 win in Potter’s first game in charge at the start of the 2019-20 season.

But he has become a firm favourite since then.

Potter said: “He has grown over his time at the club.

“I always say players are unique but he is because we don’t have a player with the same attributes as he does.

“He can play as an extra midfielder who links up with the attack, to get in behind and score goals.

“His goal against Brentford for example, that’s a really good example of him attacking the backline and finishing.

“That’s what he has done and he has improved.

“But I think there’s more to come from him in terms of adding goals and assists.

“At the same time, he can play the game that helps the team build attacks and get into the final third, to create chances as a collective.”

Alexis Mac Allister was also sidelined by positive Covid tests but he too is now available.

#PLStories- Dan Ashworth speaks about decision to leave Brighton #BHAFC

Dan Ashworth looks forward to seeing Albion go from strength to strength after stepping down as technical director.

Ashworth has spoken to the club’s website about his decision to resign.

He said he leaves with a heavy heart but hopes to see Albion maintain their “outstanding progress” under chairman Tony Bloom.

Ashworth’s resignation was announced on Monday.

He told brightonandhovealbion.com: “I have been lucky that the club have allowed me two days to have a handover, to speak to all the staff, to say goodbye.

“I was allowed a moment with the team yesterday and genuinely said to them that this is probably the best group of players I have had the privilege of working with in terms of culture and togetherness. They’re a joy to work with.

“That’s pretty much the same message for the staff as well, the phrase I have used quite regularly is, ‘if you don’t want to do a day’s work in your life, get a job you enjoy’ and that’s been me, that’s been me for the last three-and-a-half years at Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club.

“It’s been absolutely brilliant, I have loved every minute of it. I leave with a heavy heart, I genuinely do and I will be watching the progress of the club, hoping the club go from strength-to-strength and continue the outstanding progress the club has made with Tony as chairman.

“So a huge thank you to everyone, players, staff, supporters and the city, I have had a wonderful time.”

Ashworth said David Weir, now acting technical director, is a strong candidate to take over on a more permanent basis.

He added: “What hasn’t changed is Tony Bloom and Paul Barber were here before me and they still are, that hasn’t changed.

“Paul Winstanley, from a recruitment point of view, and John Morling, in the academy, were both here before me and are still here.

“It’s not about wholesale changes and a load of new staff coming in. Those systems and principals were in place.

“I was the first technical director at Brighton so what I hope I have done is sit as the hub in the wheel and just bring it together and I have no doubt David will do the same.”

#PLStories- Graham Potter gives his reaction on technical director Dan Ashworth exit #BHAFC

Graham Potter says Dan Ashworth faced “a really tough decision” before leaving Albion.

But he has backed the club to continue to progress despite his departure.

Ashworth handed in his resignation as technical director this week.

He is expected to take up a similar role at Newcastle United.

Ashworth has been at the club for almost three years and was involved in Potter’s arrival as head coach in 2019.

Potter said today: “Of course (I am) disappointed because Dan was a colleague, he was a friend, he was someone I respected a lot. Of course I still respect him.

EVAN FERGUSON ON TARGET IN FA YOUTH CUP WIN

“He has been an important person at the football club but these things happen. It’s life.

“We are at a really well run football club, which doesn’t rely on one person, as important as they are.

“We move forward as a club together and we take on the challenge of life without Dan as best we can.”

David Weir has stepped in as acting technical director.

Potter added: “As you can imagine I had lots of calls with Dan, lots of conversations with him.

“I understood his situation.

“I think it was a really tough decision for him.

“He has got his family, he has got his reasons.

“Then you have to respect Dan is a grown man, he is a very intelligent man.

“He understands what he has got here.

“At the same time he has got another opportunity so you have to respect that in life.

“I respect Dan, I respect what he has done for the club, I respect his decision.

“But I know this club does not rely on one person.

“It’s a real collective strength that we have and that’s what I think will take us through.

“I’m looking forward to working with David Weir and we will go from there.”

#PLStories- Che Adams speaks about Southampton teammate James Ward-Prowse #SAINTSFC

CHE Adams and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl heaped praise on captain James Ward-Prowse, after the England international provided two pinpoint assists to help his side steer past Spurs 3-2.

Armando Broja cancelled out Jan Bednarek’s own goal in the first half, before Saints were rocked by a controversial Heung-Min Son goal with quarter of an hour left to play.

Undeterred, the away side quickly silenced the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Moi Elyounoussi got his head on a Ward-Prowse cross.

There was a strong sense of déjà vu when Adams headed home the winner, with Ward-Prowse sending a near identical cross into the box.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, match winner Adams said: “As soon as Prowsey gets into the wide areas, you know it is going to be quality.

“I was in the right place to put it in, I could see it all the way. So, it was up to me to direct it on target, and thankfully it went in.”

When asked if he felt a sense of redemption after spurning a gilt-edged chance in the first half, Adams admitted that the should have done better when one-on-one with Hugo Lloris after two minutes of action.

“Definitely – in the first half I should have scored that one, but the ball came into the right area the second time and I managed to put it away,” added Adams.

Praise for Ward-Prowse didn’t just stem from his teammate, with his boss Hasenhuttl also quick to laud his skipper. The 54-year-old also credited Elyounoussi and Adams for attacking the ball, rather than remaining static in a dangerous area.

The Austrian told press: “We were very often speaking about the situation that we have to score in this moment.

“The key is the ball, how he delivers it.

“But the key is also the run because when you park outside the box and watch the ball flying in then it is not dangerous.

“When you attack the gap, the defender on the second post has a problem and this was the reason why.”

Saints’ first ever victory at Tottenham’s new home lifts them up to 10th in the league table, with Hasenhuttl’s men plundering 28 points from 23 games.

It is a quick turnaround for Saints, with a lunchtime kick-off away at Old Trafford to contend with on Saturday.

#PLStories- Graham Potter praises Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk for performance against Tottenham after injury #BHAFC

Lewis Dunk is poised for his Premier League return – helped by a big FA Cup test.

Head coach Graham Potter has praised his skipper’s efforts in the 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

He now targets Saturday’s trip to Watford as Potter returns to the scene of his first game in charge of the Seagulls.

Dunk missed nine games with a knee injury before being thrown in against Spurs’ array of dangerous attackers.

Potter said: “I thought he was really, really good considering the time he has had out.

“So brave, full of spirit, full of quality.

“A bit of rustiness as you can imagine after a couple of months and playing at the level.

“Son and Kane and Moura are as good as you get in terms of attacking the spaces.

“A tough night for him but I thought he coped with it really well.”

Dunk was named BBC’s man of the match when Potter opened his Albion tenure with a 3-0 win at Vicarage Road on the first day of the 2019-20 season.

Current squad members Pascal Gross, Solly March and Shane Duffy all started that day and Neal Maupay scored on his debut off the bench.

Potter’s first starting XI also included the now departed Maty Ryan, Martin Montoya, Dan Burn, Davy Propper, Dale Stephens, Jurgen Locadia and Glenn Murray.

He sent on Florin Andone, who scored, and Bernardo as subs.
