Bruno Lage lamented Wolverhampton Wanderers’ missed chances as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Molineux. Wolves spurned the opportunity to move above the Gunners in the Champions League race after Gabriel Magalhães’ winner. Lage’s team created numerous chances in the second half and dominated the ball, but Arsenal held firm to secure three points.
Bruno Lage said: “First half, it was a balanced game, but we talked in the break with the players, ‘We are better players than them. Believe.’ We wanted to put more tempo in the game and create more problems for the opponent and we did. We had plenty of chances to score but we didn’t score. We put in crosses, we linked between the lines and had plenty of chances to score. It’s not new, especially at home. We are playing well and didn’t score goals, and they scored.”
Wolves’ players were furious that Arsenal’s goal was allowed to stand after Alexandre Lacazette clattered into Jose Sa before turning the ball into Gabriel’s path. Referee Michael Oliver allowed the goal to stand, but Lage isn’t sure the referee got it right.
Bruno Lage added: “When you look at the way we suffered that goal, it was a bit strange. I saw some contact on the goalkeeper in the six-yard box. I don’t know if we have time to see, but the striker touched Jose. But we cannot find that excuse. We need to say that. The most important thing is the way we play, creating chances, but it’s hard when you don’t get goals and points from this game.”
