Alan Shearer staked his claim for an England recall by grabbing Blackburn’s equaliser to crown a stunning display of aggression, pace and power. Shearer rose superbly to the occasion and popped up with the 81st-minute equalizer. Mike Newell, surprisingly relegate to substitute but brought on for the last quarter-hour provided the cross.

Mark Bright wasted three close-in chances which could have made all the difference for Wednesday. Their only goal came in the 55th minute via a short corner taken by Chris Waddle. The ball was shunted through three players until Andy Pearce delivered a telling header for Graham Hyde to sidefoot home.
