Blackburn Rovers’ European Dream alive as their bid to replace Marseille was backed by the English FA
Blackburn Rovers’ bid for 11th-hour European entry in the wake of Marseille’s Champions Cup expulsion had received official FA backing. Rovers contacted the English FA as soon as the holders and the French Champions were slung out by UEFA following allegations of bribery.
The French federation had been asked to name a replacement for Marseille in the premier club competition – and Kenny Dalglish’s Rovers were hopeful that they would be able to get into the tournament via the backdoor. Runners up Paris St Germain were next in line who had refused to become the replacement.
