Former England and Manchester City defender Micah Richards says he would not be surprised if Tammy Abraham is disheartened by Timo Werner’s arrival at Chelsea. Werner will join the club from RB Leipzig at the end of next month as Frank Lampard looks to add firepower to his attack. Yet, speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Richards said there was no way Werner could play with Abraham.
Micah Richards said “I just don’t know you can have Tammy and Timo Werner in there. I know he can play off the left but I was watching some clips of Werner and he does like to start in the centre. He drifts a lot to the left and obviously he’s got electric pace but because they’ve both got striker mentalities, the way Frank Lampard likes to play with high intensity, I don’t know if you can have them both in the same team. I think it’s going to be either-or. I could be wrong but we’ve not even mentioned Mason Mount who can play in midfield and further forward. Healthy competition is good but when Tammy scored so many goals this season, I’d just be a little bit disheartened, a big-money striker coming in. You already know you’ve got to compete for your place.”
