Jeremy Sarmiento

#PLStories- Ecuador boss tells Brighton attacking midfielder Jeremy Sarmiento to play with freedom #BHAFC

Jeremy Sarmiento has been told to play with freedom for his country. The Albion attacking midfielder was largely praised by observers – with one headline-making exception - as he made his first start for Ecuador. He played 76 minutes and was a bright spot of a somewhat laboured 1-0 win over bottom side Venezuela in the South American qualifying group for the World Cup. The three points keep Ecuador on course to reach Qatar. Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, currently on loan at Beerschot, was also in the starting XI.   La ovación más grande hoy fue para Jeremy Sarmiento, harta pelota y tiene apenas 19 años.Que ganas de verlo junto a Estrada y Mena el próximo martes contra Chile.TALENTO PURO. pic.twitter.com/PJHZ2mPL6q — Alfredo Pinoargote Quiroz (@alfredjoe80) November 12, 2021   Ecuador boss Gustavo Alfaro said: “Jeremy made a good impression on me. “We had a chat (the day before the game) and he told me he was very happy and enjoying his time with Ecuador. “I asked him to feel a sense of freedom and I asked him, at the age of 19, to never lose his generosity, his capacity to run, his humility.” Alfaro said he had no doubts over giving Sarmiento his full debut. Despite widespread praise, Sarmiento’s selection was questioned by well known TV journalist Arturo Magallanes. But Renato Paiva, head coach of leading club Independiente del Valle, made headlines as he launched a stinging counter-attack on Magallanes and supported Sarmiento.   Buena victoria ayer, estoy feliz de ser parte de este gran equipo!! Cada vez mas cerca a nuestro objetivo 🇪🇨💪🏽 pic.twitter.com/Mc9J7Atcew — Jeremy Sarmiento (@jeremysarm7ento) November 12, 2021   The Albion prospect himself simply tweeted: “Good win yesterday, happy to be part of this great team! Getting closer to our objective.”
James Ward Prowse

#PLStories – James Ward-Prowse and Tino Livramento withdraw from England national teams #SAINTSFC

SAINTS skipper James Ward-Prowse has withdrawn from the England senior squad while Tino Livramento will also play no part in the under-21s upcoming games. The club have confirmed both have been withdrawn from Three Lions camps for differing reasons. Ward-Prowse will miss Gareth Southgate & co’s final two World Cup qualifying matches against Albania and San Marino due to illness. Young full-back Livramento has been withdrawn from his respective squad due to an injury. Both players took part and played a full 90 minutes against Aston Villa, during the 1-0 televised win on Friday evening, and left the pitch unscathed. But the club’s statement reads: “Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse has been withdrawn from the latest England squad due to illness, while Tino Livramento has also been withdrawn from the England Under-21s squad due to injury.” Livramento had been called up to both Lee Carsley's last two under-21 squads, while Ward-Prowse was looking to capitalise on his second successive call-up after missing the European Championships and September games. The Saints captain scored the second England goal of his international career with the rebound of a penalty during victory in Andorra last time out. Nathan Redmond was ruled out of the Premier League contest versus Aston Villa due to a positive Covid-19 test, only revealed by the club under an hour to kick-off, but it is unknown if Ward-Prowse's illness concern is related.  The 27-year-old midfielder had been battling through stomach concerns in the early stages of this season.
Nick Pope

#PLStories- Burnley stopper Nick Pope determined to get back in England National Team #BURNLEYFC

BURNLEY goalkeeper Nick Pope is disappointed at missing out on England selection again but stressed his “massive respect” for Gareth Southgate and that he knows the “door is not closed”. Southgate’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino was announced yesterday, with Pope omitted while Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone got the nod - as was the case last month. Pope, holder of seven caps, had previously returned to the squad for England’s games in September, having sat out their Euro 2020 campaign over the summer after undergoing knee surgery. The 29-year-old has earned plaudits for recent performances, and he told a press conference yesterday, ahead of Burnley’s trip to Chelsea tomorrow, that he felt like he was “in a good place” in terms of his form. When asked about the England squad, Pope said: “I’m obviously disappointed to be left out. I was disappointed to be left out last month. But that’s not my decision, it’s the manager’s decision. It’s out of my hands. “It’s unfortunate. I think over the last three years I’ve performed at a really good level. So to be dropped from a squad six games into a season was something that wasn’t ideal, but that’s how football goes, how life goes. “It’s about moving forward and getting on with it. I’ve got a really important role to play here at Burnley in a really exciting squad, so I’m looking forward to playing my part in that. “That was how I felt about it, going into the summer before the injury - pushing Jordan, and if you want to call it second choice for the Euros in the summer. And then the injury, and (I’ve) come back this season and (I’m) not in the top three. “But football - sometimes it’s not about dwelling on that and putting too much thought into that. After this international break, I think there’s four, five months in between England games. So there’s a lot more going on.” Pope said he had a “really good conversation” with England boss Southgate when he was left out for the October games. And he said of the England boss: “I have massive respect for him, he brought me into the squad and has kept me in squads and has always been really good with me when I’ve played, not played. So to get a call is nice in that regard, as much as the news wasn’t great.” He added: “I’m sure he (Southgate) has had more difficult decisions than dropping me. I don’t think it sent shockwaves through the footballing world. “There’s plenty that have come out and then come back in over the last three or four years, so the door is not closed, which is good to know.” Burnley boss Sean Dyche said after the 3-1 win against Brentford last week he thought Pope was “looking right back on it”. And Dyche added yesterday: “I think he’s been terrific. I think he’s a terrific keeper all-round anyway. He wasn’t far off, but he’d been out a while and getting that real sharpness, and I think that’s back.”
James Ward Prowse

#PLStories- James Ward Prowse thinks Phil Foden will go a long way for England #SAINTSFC #MCFC

JAMES Ward-Prowse has backed England colleague Phil Foden to go a “long, long way” after his starring role in the World Cup qualifying victory in Andorra. Playing alongside the Saints captain, Foden ran the show against the Group I minnows, twice picking out fine passes which led to Ben Chilwell and Bukayo Saka scoring on the way to a 5-0 win. Tammy Abraham added a third before Ward-Prowse tucked home the rebound after his penalty was saved and Jack Grealish completed the rout with his first England goal. But it was the display of 21-year-old Foden which caught the eye. Read more “I thought he was brilliant,” said the Saints skipper. “It was probably one of the first times I’ve played in a game with him. He’s brilliant to have on your team. “He wants the ball all the time, You can see his natural ability with the ball. He made a few wonderful passes with his left foot, dinking it over the defensive line of Andorra. The pair are more used to being on opposing teams (Pic: PA) “You can see he has an abundance of quality. He has a good head on his shoulders as well. He is going to go a long, long way in the game for sure.” Ward-Prowse started in a deeper role with Foden and Jesse Lingard ahead of him as part of a three-man midfield. A ninth senior cap came despite Ward-Prowse having initially missed out on Southgate’s squad before being called up as a replacement for the injured Kalvin Phillips. “Of course you want to be in the squad straight away,” he said. “Every player wants to be in it but there is so much competition for places and so many quality players that it becomes increasingly difficult – but injuries happen and I am grateful to be a part of the squad again. “That’s all you can do. Regardless of the opposition or what circumstances you are put in it is to be there to take your chance and be ready and I feel as if I have made a positive step.” England are in World Cup qualifying action again tonight, when they welcome Hungary to Wembley Stadium (7:45PM).
Che Adams

#PLStories- Che Adams reveals ‘slight problem’ with his heart scan before Scotland’s Euro 2020 opener #SAINTSFC

CHE Adams revealed he had a “slight problem” with his electrocardiogram (ECG) heart scan before Scotland’s Euro 2020 opener back in June. The Saints frontman was brought off the bench by Steve Clarke for their group clash against Czech Republic on June 14, before starting their remaining games against England and Croatia. And the 25-year-old, who featured in Saturday’s 3-2 World Cup qualifier over Israel at Hampden Park on Saturday, revealed how he had to go to hospital for clearance ahead of appearing at the tournament. The Scotland frontman told the Daily Record: “It was difficult at first to get my head around not starting against Czech Republic. “But once you do that, it’s okay. That’s just football. “And to be fair, we did have a slight problem before the game with my ECG heart scan. “I had one before the game and they had to take me to hospital to get more information on it. So that could have been another reason why the gaffer made that decision. “I wasn’t worried. I think they just needed more data to prove I was okay. “Obviously with what happened to (Christian) Eriksen, everyone was having to do heart scans. “So that was all it was, they just needed more information and data to back it up. And I was all good. “I’ve never had any heart issues in the past. Getting these scans is just a standard thing now. “But the manager was probably concerned about me before the game. “It was nothing serious but he wanted to protect me and I think it was the right decision. “Obviously, I’m alright now and I’d had scans in the past with nothing coming up. It was more a case of other people being more worried about it than me.” Adams played 68 minutes of his country’s latest triumph against Israel, during which Scott McTominay scored a dramatic late winner. Steve Clarke’s side remain in second place in Group F on 14 points behind runaway leaders Denmark ahead of a trip to the Faroe Islands on Tuesday, where three points will be expected in the quest for a play-off spot.
Jeremy Sarmiento

#PLStories- Brighton’s Jeremy Sarmiento targets World Cup in Qatar #BHAFC #WC2022

Jeremy Sarmiento has set his sights on Qatar – after hitting the right note on and off the pitch with Ecuador. The Albion prospect, who has yet to appear in the Premier League, made his full international debut as a sub in a World Cup qualifier versus Bolivia. He went on just after the hour as Ecuador, inspired by Moises Caicedo, won 3-0 in Guayaquil. Ecuador were already three up and cruising by the time Sarmiento entered the action. The 19-year-old has been capped at youth level by England and was close to an under-15 appearance for Ecuador. But he said: “I have always wanted to play for the Ecuador national team and this has been going on for some years. “I didn’t expect to make my debut today but in the end, it happened.” Ecuador visit Venezuela this weekend and then move on to Colombia. They remain well-placed in the arduous and fiercely competitive CONMEBOL qualifying competition for next year’s World Cup. Sarmiento said: “If we continue like this, we will go to the World Cup.” Speaking in Spanish, he called on the team to “give it some neque” in the coming games, using a colloquial word popular in South America, particularly Ecuador. It essentially means a combination of strength, courage and desire. Sarmiento’s choice of vocabulary appears to have delighted many fans who questioned the Madrid-born, London-raised teen’s allegiance to their nation. Ecuador coach Gustavo Alfaro sees Sarmiento as a bright prospect. He said: “We had a comfortable night because the team was solid defensively. “Jeremy Sarmiento is adjusting to this reality of the national team. “It was a nice possibility to be able to play him. He has enormous growth potential.” Caicedo, the Albion midfielder on loan at Beerschot, played the first 78 minutes. WHAT NEWCASTLE BUYOUT MEANS FOR BRIGHTON AND PREMIER LEAGUE He looked sharp as he set up the team’s second goal, for Enner Valencia, with a brilliant piece of skill and measured pass. It was Valencia’s first international goal for almost two years and made him his nation’s all-time leading scorer with 32.
Burnley Stadium

#PLStories- Burnley chosen to host U-21 Championship against the Czech Republic #BURNLEYFC

Turf Moor has been chosen to host England’s European Under-21 Championship qualifier against the Czech Republic. The fixture – the Three Lions’ fourth match in Group B - will take place on Thursday, November 11 (KO 7pm). “We are honoured to be hosting England U21s and bringing international football back to Burnley,” chairman Alan Pace told the club’s website. “As a club with a passion for developing young homegrown talent, I am sure our supporters will welcome the opportunity to see the country’s most exciting players at Turf Moor and get behind England in this important UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifier.” The Clarets were due to host a qualifier between England and Turkey back in March 2020, but the game was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Three Lions – now managed by former Republic of Ireland midfielder Lee Carsley – kick off their qualifying campaign against Kosovo on Tuesday, September 7. Carsley – who took charge following Aidy Boothroyd’s departure - will be aiming to guide the England youngsters to the 2023 finals in Romania. Burnley winger Dwight McNeil – who is no longer eligible for the Under-21 squad – helped the side reach the 2021 finals in Hungary and Slovenia, where they failed to reach the knockout rounds.
Jannik Vestergaard

#PLStories- #RalphHasenhuttl gives update on #JannikVestergaard #SAINTSFC

JANNIK Vestergaard is yet to return to the Saints squad following extended holiday after Denmark reached the European Championship semi-final, with Ralph Hasenhuttl admitting “it wouldn’t be surprising if there were offers.” The 28-year-old defender put in solid performances when the spotlight was on and impressed throughout the tournament, with only a year left on his deal sparking murmurs of transfer interest from elsewhere. The centre-back played 30 times in the Premier League for Saints last season and would be an integral part of manager Hasenhuttl’s plans. Unless the Dane signs a new deal, Saints would lose the man they paid a fee of £18million for back in July 2018 for nothing, next summer. Read more Saints' new signing Dynel Simeu's career in numbers Saints taking 'no risk' over Armstrong or Ward-Prowse knocks Ralph Hasenhuttl: We are very clear we need more players He’s not the only one in that scenario, with the likes of Danny Ings’ long-term future also up in the air ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. However, Hasenhuttl has made the same defiant claim he did on striker Ings in regards to Vestergaard’s future, telling BBC Radio Solent: “The situation is that he is back on Monday. “He has one year left on his contract, I plan with him next season, definitely. We need everybody here. He played a very good Euros. “It wouldn’t be surprising if there were offers coming. But I plan with him next season.” The Dane won’t be back in time for the Swansea fixture in Wales this weekend but Saints have two more pre-season matches against La Liga sides Levante (Wednesday August 4) and Athletic Bilbao (Saturday August 7). With Saints kicking off their season on Saturday August 14 with a trip to Everton, if Vestergaard is to stay the Austrian boss will want him match fit and he could see his first minutes since returning from international duty.
