Ex-Manchester United player and legend Frank Stapleton reckoned that the bitter lessons learned at Old Trafford could help Aston Villa boss Ron Atkinson clinch the premier league championship. Stapleton was manager of Bradford at the time and he was convinced that his ex-boss Atkinson could handle the pressure.
United was just a point ahead of Villa as they went into their home clash against Chelsea that week, who had won three consecutive matches. Villa who were set to face Manchester City that weekend had given up their prime position after just drawing against Coventry.
Frank Stapleton said “Big Ron learned a lot from his time at United. That will stand him in good stead for the run in. He knows all about the pressure from his time here. Ron seems relaxed at the moment and from this point on, it will be about who holds their nerves. Naturally, I have a soft spot for United because I was there a long time.”
