Ex Liverpool player David Fairclough admitted that he knew that he was always going to be an extra man for Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush during his later time at Anfield. He said he always felt that he had too much competition to deal with at the club despite scoring a lot of goals that should have merited him more starts.
David Fairclough said “I was an 18-year-old lad, who didn’t expect to push Toshack, Keegan or Heighway out of contention. I was astonished at times to the number of goals I had scored as a sub. After my injury, I came back but I knew I was the extra man to Ian Rush and Dalglish. And not the body could have hoped to break in then. The system has always been that whoever came into the side had to fit in with the way Rush played – and for a decade, he was a winner.”
