Paul Mcgrath lifted the players’ player of the year award in London that day. The Aston Villa defender was clearly thrilled to join the likes of Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and former Villa teammate David Platt in soccer’s hall of fame. The Republic of Ireland International edged home ahead of Paul Ince of Manchester United who finished second and Alan Shearer who was third.
The 33-year-old ex-Manchester United defender was hoping that his achievement was just the first in what could be a season to remember.
Paul McGrath said “This is the greatest honour of my career so far. The great thing about this award is that is awarded by your fellow professionals. There is a no bigger compliment. It’s the biggest thrill of my career but hopefully, there are bigger things to achieve this season.”
