Wolverhampton Wanderers have lost their first three Premier League games of the season – against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United respectively. And all of them have been by the painfully slimmest of margins, 1-0. Against United, Wanderers started off on the right foot, creating lots of chances to snatch the lead, but in the end it was Mason Greenwood’s 80th minute strike that left head coach Bruno Lage still looking for his first league success. Despite their recent results, Wolves fans have been encouraged by their team’s performances since Lage was appointed coach, early in June. And midfielder Ruben Neves also remains confident.

Ruben Neves said: “We need to keep working. We need to keep going. To be honest with you, I’ve never been in a position like this. Playing like we are playing and not scoring goals. But I’m sure the goals will come. I’m pretty sure that if we keep going, if we keep doing what we are doing, I’m pretty sure the results will come for us, because in a normal way, if we play like this for 10 games, we would lose two and win the rest. I think as soon as the first goal goes in, it will change and we will start winning games.”

Lage’s men have had over 55 shots in the last three games, but are yet to score a single goal. The home side welcomed fans to a full-capacity Molineux, who witnessed the Portuguese be fouled in the build-up to the goal.

Ruben Neves added: “Everyone saw it. Everyone saw my leg. I don’t know why [a foul wasn’t given], to be honest with you. They always do meetings about referees, about VAR. I don’t know why. They said before the season start that they would look for contact, and if the contact is strong enough, they would give the foul. I showed them my leg, just their decision was ‘no’. Maybe because in the last game [for United] it was a foul just before the Southampton goal. Maybe. But now they just did the opposite. Everyone saw my leg, I showed it to the ref, I showed it to the assistant ref, so I cannot say anything. That’s their decision.”

Wolves will travel to Vicarage Road after the international break to take on newly-promoted side, Watford as they bid for their first win of the campaign.
