Former Arsenal midfielder Dani Ceballos has been hailed as “miraculous” after escaping a serious injury whilst on Olympic duty with Spain. The 24-year-old has returned to Real Madrid after a two-year loan spell at the Emirates Stadium and is currently busy in Tokyo having been selected in Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad for the delayed 2020 Olympics. His tournament looked as though it was set to be handed a devastating, premature ending after he suffered an ankle injury in Spain’s opening 0-0 draw against Egypt. However, that now appears not to be the case with head coach de la Fuente suggesting that he could potentially return for the quarter-finals.
Luis de la Fuente said: “Dani’s thing has been miraculous. I want to recognize the physiotherapist and the doctor. In other circumstances it would have been a much longer injury. If we are lucky enough to be in the quarter-finals, he will be there. What is clear is that we are not going to risk [him] until we are sure that it is okay. We are very happy.”
Ceballos initially joined Arsenal ahead of the 2019/20 season on-loan and impressed enough for that deal to be extended for a further campaign by the Gunners.
