Merseyside’s tottering giants were set to fight it out at Anfield for a lifeline to premier league safety. Everton manager Howard Kendall knew exactly where the Liverpool threat lied. Ian Rush lead the Reds on a revenge mission following their 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park in December the previous year. He was a rejuvenated played at the time having score three goals in the previous three games.
Howard Kendall said “I’ve been a big admirer of Rushie for a year and it is common knowledge that at the end of last season when he was out of contract, I was very very interested in bringing him to Everton. If Graeme Souness wants to drop him again I certainly wouldn’t argue.”
Graeme Souness said, “This has been a miserable season by our standards and the supporters have not had a lot to cheer about, but beating Everton would give them that.”
