Jurgen Klopp praised his players for sticking together this season as Liverpool ended their Premier League campaign in third. And the Reds boss believes the achievement should be seen as even more impressive given they largely did it without fans. Klopp hailed the achievement as an “outstanding” one and gave credit to his team for staying positive during some of the tougher periods of a testing term at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp said: “It is great. It is outstanding. From outside you cannot really understand because we are just Liverpool we have to perform, we have to become champions, or whatever. But is was just not possible this year so we have to fight through. In the harder moments you can learn the most. We stuck together all the time. There were no arguments about different things. We just knew some things were tough but football is based on confidence and we had not a lot of opportunities to gain confidence, we were just constantly sorting problems. It was so nice we could use the last five, six or seven weeks to give this season a proper turnround and I am so happy for the Champions League they don’t have to play without us. We are in it, that will be great, I can’t wait for that. It is an outstanding achievement from the boys. Manchester City is rightly champions. A great season, congratulations to them. But just because we cannot be champions doesn’t mean we have any targets. Champions League is really good.”
Two goals from Sadio Mane were enough for Liverpool to see off Palace in front of the largest crowd at Anfield since March 2020. A total of 10,000 created the backdrop for the Reds to thrive as they sealed their Premier League term on a high at home.
Jurgen Klopp added: “I cannot sum it up, too much happened [this season]. To have the opportunity to do this, this last game in front of 10,000 means the world to us. The 10,000 did a really good job, when we came out it sounded so loud. It was absolutely incredible and it was so nice to have this experience again together. Everything is better when there are people in the stadium and we are better when we have people in the stadium. We can fight more when there are people in the stadium because they support us. They give us a boost and help us. That we did it without them makes the achievement even bigger to be honest. But I don’t want to try it for a second time.”
