Jurgen Klopp is targeting 12 points from Liverpool’s final four games as their hopes of a top-four finish were boosted with a 2-0 win over Southampton.
Jurgen Klopp said: “I am not sure if keeping our fingers crossed helps, but look, we have to win football games and I think if we win all four it could be enough. But that is just because Leicester plays against Tottenham and each other [with Chelsea], so I didn’t really think it through. But winning four games is pretty much the only chance we have but that is what we should try. It will be difficult but it is what we must try. It was a big one for us tonight, obviously. We really needed that and it was tough. So it is always like this against Southampton, I can’t remember a game against them and it felt comfortable. Years ago in a League Cup game (in 2015) but it was long before Ralph Hasenhuttl was there. They have an intense style and ask for everything, so we did a really good job and I am happy with that. We’ve had it twice in a row now where we’ve had a similar situation [of scoring early] so that second goal is a big relief. What that means now for our top-four hopes, they are still alive, nothing else. It’s nothing to do with confidence or whatever, our situation has changed slightly but only for us. For the other teams not too much, they are still in a better position and we know that. The only thing we can do is win our games and that is really tough because we play on Thursday at Manchester United and historically that is not easy, but we will give it a try.”
