Wimbledon boss Joe Kinnear was praying that injuries don’t wreck the Dons’ trophy chances that year. Kinnear was operating with a squad of only 23 professionals and after a successful start to the season, where the side was hovering around the top 5. The injuries had started to mount and was threatening their bid to get into the European positions and have a good cup run.
In their match against Ipswich Town, they were robbed off John Fashanu, Warren Barton and John Scales, some 5 million pounds worth of talent. And his inexperienced side suffered their first home defeat of the season, losing 0-2 to Ipswich.
Joe Kinnear said ‘’With a small squad like ours, injuries are our biggest fear. We can achieve so much this season with a fully fit squad but its difficult to keep the momentum with such a tight squad.’’
