Graeme Souness’s Liverpool got knocked out by second division Bolton and were booed off the park as the manager’s future was under severe doubts. Boos and whistles greeted the men in red as they left the pitch and while Souness blamed the players for the performances but insiders at Anfield believed that the former Rangers man may have to go. Caught in an economic black hole Souness was forced to offload key players like Steve Staunton, Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders. That coupled with an appalling injury list left the reds struggling to come anywhere near the sort of form that made the club the dominant force in British and European football for so long.

Graeme Souness said “We were outplayed and outfought by the better team. Bolton deserved to win. They were better than us in all departments”
