Steve Coppell, whose Crystal Palace side was thrashed by five goals at the end of November and was rumoured to be the bookmaker favourite to get the sack had turned his side’s fortunes around to win the manager of the month award for December 1992. The situation was so bad that Coppell and Palace chairman Ron Noades were both forced to issue denials about the speculation of Coppell leaving the club. But since the 5-0 drubbing at Liverpool, Coppell’s team began December with a battling 1-1 draw in the cup at Anfield and followed it up with six back to back victory.
