Middlesborough manager Lennie Lawrence was hoping that an FA cup triumph over league rivals Chelsea could provide a springboard for success that season. He saw his side enjoy a surge in the second half of the season in the previous year which led to them clinching promotion and he was hoping that the history could repeat itself. He said, “A year ago we got a lift with a boxing day win over Newcastle, success over Chelsea would be equally important.”
