Ipswich had seen off the threats of Aston Villa, Liverpool, Leeds, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham on home soil that season. Ipswich keeper Clive Baker was hoping that his opposite end would be the busier one in the match but he was ready to face the challenge of Alan Shearer if needed.
