Steve Nicol Bruce Grobbler Ian Rush

Liverpool skipper Steve Nicol, who missed the Coventry disaster with a groin injury, he was expected to return in central defence against Oldham. Graeme Souness seemed certain to restore his partnership with Torben Plechnik, after dropping former captain Mark Wright. Souness was also expected to reunite Jamie Redknapp with Mike Marsh in central midfield. The pair were impressive against Blackburn but Marsh reverted to right back at Coventry. Don Hutchison was also hoping for a recall after injury.
