Kevin Keegan pointed towards his star striker and birthday boy Andy Cole to get an England cap sooner rather than later. With Cole – 22 that day maintaining a remarkable goal scoring record for United against Queens Park Rangers a day later, Keegan backed Ian Wright’s Cole for England cry.
Kevin Keegan said “You can not get any better than the players in possession pushing your claim. Ian Wright is just saying what the whole country is thinking about Andy Cole. We’ll have to just wait and see if he is as good at 22 as he was when he was 21.”
Andy Cole said “I was a bit surprised when I head what Ian Wright had said and funnily enough I spoke to him last night. I want to play for England but it’s not down to me. In any case, its not over yet as far as England are concerned and there is still a long way to go. My only thought at the moment is QPR and I would love a birthday goal against them especially as their winger Trevor Sinclair was my roommate with England under 21 squad this week.”
