Ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Chelsea, their manager Alex Ferguson admitted to the fact that he had tried to sign Irish stars Andy Townsend and John Aldridge one summer earlier. Ferguson had to look on in envy as midfield action man Townsend had become the driving force behind Chelsea’s premier league push that year. He said “I rang Chelsea and made an enquiry about Andy before the season started but they were unwilling to sell. He is, without a doubt, one of the best midfielders in England. I spoke to Tranmere also for Aldo but the fee was such that it was going to be very difficult for any club to buy him.”
