Just before his own testimonial match, Liverpool defender Steve Nicol talked about every single manager he had played under during his decade at Merseyside. He had played under Bob Paisley, the manager who signed him, Joe Fagan, Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness. He had the following words on the later two managers.
Steve Nicol said “Kenny was different, he could tell you directly what he wanted you to do, or on other occasions, he’d do so in a way which would get you thinking. Whereas Souness is a lot more aggressive and is always straight to the point. Graeme is a bit more forceful, probably because he’s under more pressure. Each of the managers had different styles and it has its merits.”
