Douglas Luiz Aston Villa
Douglas Luiz’s tenure at Nottingham Forest is under scrutiny as the transfer window nears its close. The Juventus loanee, who recently played in Forest’s 1-0 defeat to Braga in the Europa League, is reportedly a target for Chelsea. With just over a week remaining in the transfer window, Luiz’s future at the City Ground hangs in the balance.
Sean Dyche said: “He’s ill. He’s got what’s going around – the flu sort of situation. He came in and spoke to the doctor. We said we had to get him out of the camp because we had such a long injury list when we got here and we don’t want illness to creep in as well. When you are travelling on planes and all the rest of it, it spreads like wildfire. Hopefully, he will recover quickly.”
Dyche’s comments highlight the concerns surrounding Luiz’s health and the potential impact on the squad, already dealing with a lengthy injury list. The situation is further complicated by the terms of Luiz’s loan deal, which includes a conditional obligation for Forest to buy him permanently. This obligation is reportedly triggered if Luiz makes 15 league appearances of 45 minutes or more, with the transfer fee set at £22 million.
The decision to retain or release Luiz is crucial for Nottingham Forest. On the field, the team recently secured a 2-1 victory over Brentford, with goals from Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi. This win places Forest five points clear of the relegation zone, showcasing their recent improvement under Dyche’s management.
Sean Dyche said: “Pleased with the result. First half, we played very well with and without the ball. Second half, we managed the game differently. I was really pleased with the other side of the game – tactically and the defensive organisation. Really important performances from Matz (Sels) and the two centre-halves, especially from Nikola (Milenkovic) who played in the week as well – we were asking a lot of him. The resilience of the side is improving. We have just taken six points away from home and a point against the league leaders. Seven points out of three games is very pleasing.”
Dyche’s satisfaction with the team’s recent performances underscores the importance of squad stability. However, the potential departure of Luiz could disrupt this momentum. As Chelsea’s interest looms, Forest must weigh the benefits of retaining a player of Luiz’s caliber against the financial implications of the permanent transfer clause.
The coming days will be pivotal for Nottingham Forest as they decide whether to let Luiz leave this month or retain him for the remainder of the season.
