Dominic Calvert Lewis
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has made a significant return to Premier League football with Leeds United after weighing up offers from overseas, including one from a Champions League club. The allure of playing in England’s top flight and returning to his home county, Yorkshire, proved irresistible for the striker. The entire process, from initial discussions to signing, was completed within a week, highlighting the mutual interest between the player and the club.
David Moyes said: “We just weren’t quite able to make things work, whether it was us to keep him or Dom to stay – one or the other.”
David Moyes, reflecting on Calvert-Lewin’s decision not to renew his contract, acknowledged the forward’s return to fitness, which had been a concern during his time at Goodison Park. Calvert-Lewin, now with Leeds, has been available for every game since his debut with the Whites.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin said: “It will be a strange feeling, having been there for so long and then going up against them and familiar faces that I played with for a long time. It will be a difficult away game, Monday night away at the new stadium, which I saw get built for a long period of time. So, it will be nice to play there and I am looking forward to it. But for me, it is just another game. It is another opportunity for me to keep thriving, to keep my good run of form going.”
Calvert-Lewin shared his anticipation for the upcoming match at Hill Dickinson Stadium, where he will face his former teammates. Despite the emotional aspect, he remains focused on maintaining his impressive form. A goal on Monday would mark his tenth of the season, a milestone he hasn’t reached since the 2020/21 campaign, after which he was called up to the England squad for the Euro 2020 finals.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin said: “I’ve been in the game long enough to know there is a long time between now and the end of the season and the World Cup. Like any Englishman, I want to play for my country at a World Cup of course. That’s a goal of mine in the distance but in the short term, [it’s] continuing to score goals. I’d like to think if I maintain this form, it gives me the best chance of being involved.”
Calvert-Lewin remains ambitious about his international prospects, eyeing a spot in the England squad for the World Cup. His immediate focus, however, is on contributing to Leeds United’s success by continuing to score goals.
As Calvert-Lewin prepares for the clash against his former club, his performance could serve as a reminder to Everton of what they lost. The decision to part ways with him came shortly after former Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear joined Everton’s board, adding an intriguing subplot to the encounter.
