The football community mourned the loss of Terry Yorath, the Welsh footballing great and Leeds United icon, who passed away at the age of 75 following a brief illness. The news prompted tributes from across the footballing world, including one from Richard Keys, which has since sparked controversy.
Richard Keys said: “Sad to hear the news of Terry Yorath’s passing. He was a warrior and won fans over wherever he played. He was great for us at Coventry and the reason I got Gabby a job at Sky. I had no idea who she was when we met, but I knew her dad. RIP Terry. Your daughter did you proud.”
Sports broadcaster Laura Woods was quick to criticize Keys’ tribute, expressing her disapproval on social media.
Laura Woods said: “Sorry… but what a t**t. Said with zero surprise. Sending all my love x.”
The remarks also drew a response from former BBC Sport presenter Dan Walker, who urged Keys to reconsider his words.
Dan Walker said: “Richard, just imagine what it would be like for Gabby, or a member of her family, to read this. I’m hoping you have just worded this badly and it isn’t a dig at a really difficult time. There is still time to change it.”
The controversy surrounding Keys’ comments is not new, as he has previously claimed to have played a significant role in Gabby Logan’s sports media career. Logan, who began her stint at Sky Sports in 1996 before moving to ITV, has refuted these claims in her 2022 memoir, where she described Keys as a “cruel dinosaur.” This led to a public rebuttal from Keys, who denied her accusations and criticized her statements.
Later, Keys attempted to clarify his remarks, expressing regret over the misinterpretation of his tribute.
Richard Keys said: “What a shame my words for a footballing hero of mine were entirely misinterpreted. Terry Yorath was a fabulous guy. A warrior. My affection for him meant I was more than happy to help him and his family in any way I could. Gabby’s career would make any father proud. RIP Terry.”
On the night of Yorath’s passing, Gabby Logan had to step away from her role as host of Match of the Day, with Mark Chapman stepping in to cover her duties. Logan later shared a heartfelt tribute to her father, recounting personal memories and expressing gratitude for the support she received.
