Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche did not hold back in his criticism following his team’s dramatic FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Wrexham. The match, which ended in a penalty shootout loss for Forest, saw Dyche express his frustration over an “unacceptable” first-half performance that left his team trailing by two goals.
Sean Dyche said: “I let the players know this. Certain individuals certainly know. They will have to look in the mirror on that side of things. But, the strangeness of football, the players who came on in the second half, I think were a credit. We went on and looked like a Premier League side. McAtee struggled on a rare start for Forest. Callum (Hudson-Odoi’s) two brilliant goals from him. We get back and, I mean, penalties are a lottery, but we created enough chances to win the game, but we didn’t in the end. It was unacceptable for me. I said to them you’ve got to look in the mirror, because it was unacceptable to me and the fans as well.”
When asked for his reaction about the performances of the fringe players he started at the Racecourse Ground, Dyche replied: “It’s one of them isn’t it? Well, the evidence was quite honestly there, for some, not for all. That’s what football is. There were too many who weren’t ready in the first half. As I said, I have to credit the lads who came on in the second half. They acted as the catalyst, it livened a few up including myself, and then the second half onwards, we looked like what we should do, which is a Premier League side. But you can’t give a team a two head start in football.”
Forest’s manager had made eight changes to the team that secured a midweek victory over West Ham United, introducing Oleksandr Zinchenko, Nicolo Savona, Jair Cunha, James McAtee, Douglas Luiz, Dan N’Doye, Dilane Bakwa, and Morato into the starting eleven. However, the new lineup struggled, quickly falling 2-0 behind due to goals from Liberato Cacace and Oliver Rathbone. The situation could have worsened had it not been for a crucial save by Matz Sels.
In response to the poor first-half display, Dyche made significant changes at halftime, bringing on Nicolas Dominguez, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Neco Williams. The substitutions had an immediate impact, with Igor Jesus reducing the deficit. Despite Wrexham restoring their two-goal lead, Callum Hudson-Odoi’s introduction in the 60th minute revitalized Forest, as he scored twice, including a stunning half-volley to force extra-time.
Ultimately, the match was decided by penalties, where misses from Jesus and Omari Hutchinson sealed Forest’s fate. Dyche’s post-match comments highlighted his dissatisfaction with the initial lineup’s performance and praised the second-half substitutes for their contributions.
