Josko Gvardiol
Manchester City has confirmed that defender Josko Gvardiol sustained a significant injury during their 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League. Gvardiol, who had to be substituted after a challenge, was diagnosed with a fracture to his right leg. This injury further compounds City’s current injury woes, with several key players already sidelined.
Manchester City FC said: “Josko Gvardiol has suffered a tibial fracture to his right leg. The injury was sustained during the second half of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League. The defender will have surgery later this week and an assessment remains ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the injury and expected prognosis.”
Rodri said: “Injuries unbalance the team, every time a player goes (injured) – but we have to adjust. It’s not an excuse, we have enough talent to play [through] but, in the second half, we lose face a bit. This season is going to be long so we have to keep going.”
Gvardiol’s injury adds to Manchester City’s growing list of sidelined players, which includes John Stones, Oscar Bobb, and Mateo Kovacic. Additionally, Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri are currently participating in the Africa Cup of Nations. The absence of these players has been challenging for the team, as acknowledged by Rodri, who emphasized the impact of injuries on the squad’s performance.
The match against Chelsea marked Rodri’s return to the starting lineup after a three-month injury layoff. His presence is crucial for City, and manager Pep Guardiola will be hoping to keep him fit for the remainder of the season. Jeremy Doku also made a comeback from injury in a recent match against Sunderland, providing some relief amid the injury crisis.
As Manchester City navigates through this challenging period, the team will need to rely on its depth and resilience to maintain their competitive edge in the Premier League. The upcoming weeks will be critical as they await further updates on Gvardiol’s recovery and the return of other key players.
