Manchester United’s striker Benjamin Sesko has yet to make a starting appearance in the Premier League since his transfer from RB Leipzig. Despite being named on the bench for the opening league match against Arsenal, Sesko has only made substitute appearances against Fulham and Burnley. The 22-year-old was granted his first start in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town. However, his Premier League debut as a starter remains pending. Manager Ruben Amorim, during a recent press conference, suggested that Sesko might be set for his first league start in the highly anticipated Manchester derby.
Ruben Amorim said: “I think what’s more important than looking at exactly what he did during the games, is what he can bring to our team. If you see against Burnley, he had some movements – especially inside the box – that we don’t have with Josh (Zirkzee), or with (Matheus) Cunha, and even with Rasmus (Hojlund) in the past. We have a guy (in Sesko) who really likes to go inside the box to have a header. He can run – we need to use him more as a runner – and he’s going to improve. So we need to get used to that. It feels like the pace is different and he is going to get used to that.”
Amorim continued: “I don’t know,” when asked whether the win backfired by raising expectations. “It’s hard to point to a game last year that was a backfire. We had so many moments like that. We just focus on the future. We have four points. The guy (Guardiola) is winning all the time. He can relax in not winning anymore. I have to prove myself every day here and I feel that. Is just a joke (laughs). I think we have bigger problems. We continue to have bigger problems, but we are addressing everything. And sometimes we are frustrated, angry… but we are facing all the problems. And we are trying to improve. And I see the team playing so much better now. We just need to be more clinical, to win more games and things are going to get easier.”
Amorim’s comments highlight his belief in Sesko’s unique qualities, particularly his ability to make impactful runs and his prowess inside the box. The manager emphasized the need for the team to adapt to Sesko’s style, which differs from other forwards at the club. Amorim’s light-hearted remarks about Pep Guardiola’s success and his own challenges reflect the pressure and expectations at Manchester United. Despite acknowledging ongoing issues, Amorim expressed optimism about the team’s progress and the need for greater clinical efficiency to secure more victories.
The potential inclusion of Sesko in the starting lineup for the Manchester derby could provide a new dimension to United’s attacking options. With Amorim’s confidence in Sesko’s abilities, fans will be eager to see how the young striker performs on one of the biggest stages in English football.
