pHIL Foden
Phil Foden’s recent form has been a concern for Manchester City, with the promising midfielder playing just 15 minutes this season. Once hailed as the future of the club, Foden’s career trajectory has faced significant challenges over the past 16 months. The 2024/25 season was marred by injuries and personal issues, leading to a dip in performance. However, as Manchester City prepares to face Manchester United, manager Pep Guardiola is hopeful that Foden can reignite his form and help the team regain its momentum.
Pep Guardiola said: “He’s the first I’m looking [to] for the spirit, to feel happy and the joy in every training session. He’s smiling his face and getting contributions. One of the reasons why last season we struggled is because we miss him a lot in the final third, in the creativity, in the work ethic. We’re top with that.”
Phil Foden said: “It’s been a frustrating season for me. I’ve had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally. Sometimes there are things in life that are bigger than football. I’ve struggled a little bit. Hopefully next year I can get my head mentally right and get back to where I left off the season before because I know what I’m capable of doing and the quality I have.”
Foden’s journey has been a rollercoaster since his breakout season, where he scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists, playing a pivotal role in Manchester City’s fourth consecutive Premier League title. Despite these achievements, the past year has been challenging. Injuries and off-field distractions have limited his appearances, with Foden starting just 20 of the 41 Premier League games since the title win against West Ham.
Guardiola’s decision to not rush Foden back into action highlights the importance of a gradual return to form. The Manchester derby presents an opportunity for Foden to showcase his talent once again. His memorable hat-trick against United in October 2022 serves as a reminder of his potential.
As Manchester City embarks on their Champions League campaign, Foden’s resurgence could be crucial. The club aims to bounce back from last season’s underwhelming performance in Europe, and a fit and focused Foden could be the catalyst for success. With Guardiola’s support and Foden’s determination, there’s hope that the young midfielder can reclaim his status as a key player for Manchester City.
